Part MMCMLI: Paths Open and Shut
Paths Open and Shut

Eleventh Day of the Tenth Month 293 AC

In many ways, this is a day like any other for those who dwell beneath the glittering dome at the heart of the Peerless Empire, for it has seen and outshone gods since time out of mind. A permit for a new temple is as common to receive as one for any other business, yet it is also a day unlike any other that was or ever shall be. More than a mere holy place is raised here, for as the crimson seed is buried, pale shoots dig greedily into the earth seeking not only sustenance but understanding, like blind fingers reaching out.

Enchanted steel wrought for a giant's hand shatters. Fire sputters and dies, embers swirling to earth as it begins to bulge and fall away with the words of the Old Tongue that had never once been uttered in this place, in this world. Bloodraven had counseled that you bring not a sapling for this, but a seed, and now you see the wisdom of it. A new tree for a new world. Carving a face into the Weirwood is strangely easy, as though the contours had been merely hidden in a thin layer of bark. It seems the Gods of Earth, Stone, and Tree wish to see this realm revealed by sorcery's light

Childish wonder... ancient wisdom, both of these look out from the face carved into the pale bark. Pale eyes snap open, bleeding crimson tears, in each tear the sight of a dreamer forgotten. The presence fades, the gods draw back, but the blessing lingers.

Tree of the Opaline Vault
"A curious child's face, looking out over the splendor of the Opaline Vault with wonder."
CL 20 Hallow Effect
Secondary Effect 1: Heart's Ease
Secondary Effect 2: Keep Watch —> Gain no fatigue but gain the benefit of a full night of rest.
Secondary Effect 3: Panacea —> People are healed, and afterwards they are expected to help tend to the godswood for a month as payment.

"We should probably tell the Shaitan about digging down there, 'r even just walking," Vee says, ignoring the crowd of onlookers who gathered to see the working of foreign magic.

Thankfully, the laws of the Opaline Vault state that owned property extends miles underground, so there is no danger of careless travelers stumbling over the roots of the new Heart Tree.

By contrast, raising a Heart Tree to help protect Rock Shaker's ever more prosperous though still small colony of Xorn is a more muted affair, other than the necessity to grind earth from stone as you had done in the Deep, by spells that carry a hint of Valyria's Doom. Mountain Heart is a touch wary of seeing fire so bright in the heart of his people's sanctum. Once it becomes clear that it is controlled, however, and more to the point that the tree you have grown for them does all you have claimed, he claps you on the back heartily, almost enough to make you stumble. He wears what you suspect is his attempt at a smile, a truly odd sight with a Xorn's tripartite mouth.

Xorn Defense Tree
"The serious face of a Xorn Delver, ready to do anything to defend his tribe."
Secondary Effect 1: Heart of Earth
Secondary Effect 2: Greater Magic Fang
Secondary Effect 3: Magic Vestment

Six blades and a small chest full of diamonds. A sacrifice well worth making, in gold and treasure both, to see for the first time the influence of the Old Gods and the gaze of the Three-Eyed Raven grow to a new sphere of being. You are almost tempted to speak to Bloodraven at once, to ask what he makes of the new sights. You certainly have plenty of other questions to ask, but in the end you decide against it. There are secrets yet to be found not in the north but in the south, secrets for which you will have to do more than ask.

  • Sacrifices: 6 Fire Giant Greatswords
  • Daylight Lantern Cost 10,000 IM
  • Two Advanced Druid Creature Lotus Leshys assigned as guardians and caretakers (one to each tree)

***

At first the city seems unchanged, from the constant droning of insects to the subtle hungry shifts in the vines that wrap around the ancient stone towers of the necropolis. The guide Riz'neth promised you, however, an ebony-scaled warrior, seems ill at ease in what was once his home. He paces hither and yon, the hood around his head half extended as though expecting an attack. "Looks like we have trouble already..." Dany muses, following your gaze.

Ser Richard only sighs as Lya rushes forward, curious to see what the trouble is. You indistinctly hear. "Should have brought Clegane..."

"Something grows within, something alive but not of the jungle," Vrath greets you with the news rather than any formality. "Follow..."

Indeed, at the entrance to the ruins you find an oily black iris of sorts covering the ancient stone arch, reflecting a dozen colors off its surface.

"You have you ever seen anything like this?" Malarys questions, staying well away from the strange substance as he calls on simple mage-sight to study it for a beginning.

"Never, and no memory of old speaks of it," Vrath confirms.

"Well it doesn't seem to be magic, or particularly sturdy," Dany offers, gently prodding the film. "Maybe we should just cut our way in and see who or what made it."

What do you do?

[] Cut through the strange obstruction

[] Teleport past it
-[] Just a few feet
-[] As far as Valaena explored

[] Write in

It looks like we no longer get alerts that the thread OP has made a large post, such as a new chapter.

@DragonParadox threadmark order still messed up, most recent update is placed between the very first and second ones according to threadmark list.

Maybe that is why alert didn't go out, it isn't 'new'.

I have two theories:

1) Far Realm shenanigans
2) Ooze made of out petroleum.

[X] Vee uses a 5th level spell slot to Summon 1d3+1 Jannis to scout beyond the obstruction. They will use their Invisibility and Ethereal Jaunt SLAs to scout as far as they can into the Necropolis without being noticed while still leaving themselves time to get back into range to Telepathically relay their findings to the group.

This is just the first opportunity for Vee to shine on this expedition. Her new Superior Summoning feat allows her to automatically Summon an additional creature each time she uses a Summoning spell which can bring forth multiple creatures.
