You know. I was incredibly unhappy about trying to get the Falxugon, but... I was starting to accept it. Now that opinion has flipped I feel... weird. And now a bunch of people are expressing support for recruiting it. My everything is whiplash.
The Falxugon will certainly be useful if we can get him.
Hiring it is a risk. I am
well aware of that. He will be the biggest flight risk we have yet taken on.
We have worked with risky people before however, we have even put them in positions of power. Even the
extremely ambitious and evil ones (Zherys). Hell we just hired an
Apostle Kyton. Who will by word of QM be looking for converts in the scholarium.
So... I can understand him being a big flight risk, but not as a reason
not to hire him. We've taken on flight risks many times, and they have pretty consistently payed off.
------------------------
However, "he will be useful" is not an argument that moves me. So I will attempt to explain the reasoning that did.
The Erinyes were a fantastic find. They have payed for the investment in themselves a dozen times over and shown that they were willing and able to follow the imperiums laws in letter and spirit. While enriching it with their perspective and mindset. Same with Azema. I
hope the same happens with all the fiends we just hired, and the Apostle Kyton.
A big part of our empire has been built on second chances. We've hired rapists, slavers, murders, and monsters in every sense of the word.
We stood by and listened to the Erinyes recite all of their crimes and we said
we accepted them.
It is mind bending to me that we have committed so hard to proving that anyone can be useful, that
anyone regardless of past and history can be made into a useful and exalted member of the Imperium... Only to
flinch at the first sign of risk with this devil.
I won't be able to respect our hiring decisions if we decide this Falxugon is "too dangerous" without even
talking to him.
-------------------------------------------------------
And frankly... its the same for the imps.
Except even more so. They are
fucking imps. They have the mental fortitude of a wet paper towel! We could have them singing hymns in an afternoon! Let alone what the society we created will mold them into.
Deliste explained perfectly.
Imps have a deserved reputation of betrayal, moreso even than other Devils.
I happen to think that comes from dissatisfaction with their position and near zero mobility, nobody is going to give them anything so they have to take it and they have no force to do so.
Which means you have to be plotting and cunning.
Except you're a known plotter and people don't like that so they kill you.
Your enemies kill you for being a nuisance, your allies kill you for being a weak link.
How do you preserve your existence? Same as any information broker, know something that's worth your life.
The demand for it only lasts as long as the other party doesn't know so you either need multiple secrets or multiple parties, or both.
Overall they're in an interesting spot.
Interestingly I believe the best counteracting factor to their base nature is to increase their inherent value.
Give them a way to throw their weight around and something to lose, Imps will still have this reputation but now our Imps have pride working against that and the basic cost benefit analysis has changed.
They no longer risk a worthless existence.
I tend to agree this basically means we cannot have a lot of them though.
----------------------------------
We keep an eye on people who are dangerous, we kept an eye on Zherys and played him against someone who could limit his damage and keep him engaged. We satisfied the Erinyes values to the point where they consider a
human to be a better lord than a duke of hell. When Glyra was CE we bound her to Danny, and shes just... glyra is simply awesome now. She has proven so helpful, so many times.
Even if we feed the Falxugon to the tree, and the imps...
That we should hire them is not something I want to convince you of, not after all this.
What I want to say is "Have some fucking
pride in our accomplishments" and "Have some fucking
pride in our
people."
We have proven, time and again that people can change. That people can go from "danger" to "asset", from "enemy" to "friend", and
yes from "good" to "evil". And by all that is holy and unholy do I
not mean the alignment version of good and evil.
