Interlude CDXCVIII: A Most Uncommon Messenger
A Most Uncommon Messenger

Twenty-Eight Day of the Ninth Month 293 AC

After experiencing it so many times Rhaella had almost become used to the disorientating jolt of translocation, or at least so she told herself as she let go of the young Dornishwoman's arm, looking out over the narrow streets and busy harbor of Maidenpool. If nothing else the town did not seem to have suffered overmuch from House Mooton choosing to stay true to the crown during the Usurper's War. Lord Tully likely reasoned that with Ser Myles dead his elder brother would lack the spine to cause any further trouble. William had seemingly lived up to that judgement so far, though the presence of his younger son at the Tourney of the Deep was a good sign that not all his House agreed.

Perhaps the proverbial reluctant mule might yet be prodded if not into a charge then at least a trot while he carries the bags, Rhaella thought in a moment's whimsy

"I'm glad you are feeling confident about this, Your Grace," Tyene noted, seeing her smile. "I am not looking forward to dealing with a coward without the guts to avenge his own blood."

"There are worse qualities to find in lords than timidity," the former queen replied. Neither of them needed a reminder of what those were.

From the Dornishwoman's other side the clink of steel marked Clegane getting impatient, or perhaps uncomfortable. As strange was it was to have a scion of that House as her guard for the day, Rhaella trusted her daughter's judgement, and she knew better than to judge others by their kin.

"The Stinking Goose's this way," the warrior said, pointing down one of the alleyways with some confidence.

***

Rhaella had briefly wondered why any establishment that sold food and drink would call itself 'Stinking'. Upon actually seeing the tavern she at least had to credit whatever proprietor had come up with the name with the virtue of honesty. The knacker's barn one had to pass through to get into the tavern certainly carried the odor of its trade, and even after descending the long narrow stairway into the basement Rhaella could not help but wonder if some of the blood and offal seeped in this deep. I'm not eating anything there, she told herself. The subterfuge would work well enough.

After all, who would expect a king's envoys to be meeting the son of the local lord in such a place amid the old wine casks made into tables for drunks to lounge on... quite literally in this case. The only common patrons in the tavern were two passed out sailors still cradling cups of cheap wine. By contrast, Ser Raynald Mooton was quite easy to pick out despite the patched cloak.

"Your..." the young man stuttered, starting to get to his feet.

"Sit down," Rhaella replied, voice firm but soft. "I am only a messenger now, albeit one who speaks with more authority than most. Your reply by raven said we should be discrete, but you did not specify why."

"I was afraid the bird would be captured by the Lannisters..."

"What do the Lannisters have to do with all this?" Tyene cut him off. The glamour may have hidden the usual blue of her eyes beneath muddy brown, but the look could be just as sharp.

"A pair of Golden Shields came up to the keep with a royal writ demanding aid in hunting down... outlaws," the knight replied. For a moment he looked almost like the was considering drinking the swill in front of him.

"I imagine your father was less than pleased with such heavy-handed interference," Rhaella prompted.

"My father is a cautious man, he has to be with all the lives that depend upon him," Ser Raynald Mooton said almost in challenge, not that anyone was of a mind to take him up on it, much as the Hound looked like he might like to.

"I'm assuming he would prefer the sorcerers removed before we speak?" Tyene asked. For all the words were neutral, it was not hard to guess her mind had already gone to poison.

"Not necessarily," the knight replied, his answer slow, awkward, mirroring an uncomfortable position of having to prod his father in a position he would very much wish to take. "He would prefer some proof that they are... unimportant."

How would you prefer Rhaella and Tyene handle the mages and set Lord Mooton's fears to rest?

OOC: I was not really planning a vote for this interlude from the start, but the more I considered the situation, the more this made sense as an obstacle, and it will give you guys something to debate overnight. It also gives me the chance to showcase Sandor more as something beside Dany's shadow.

@Duesal I don't think mudane genetics is all there is to it, in regards to taking Dragon-Blooded. We know lineages are important, and that there is a metaphysical weight to many things, as is readily proven by runecrafting and the entire Mythic system.

So, while Sae is probably technically purer valyrian than Viserys and Dany, the latter have the weight of being Targaryens.

I still disagree with Talon tho, Sae was doing research in exactly this, and halfway succeeded. Hundreds of years fused with her bonded dragon, living in the magically radioactive valyrian heartlands is more than enough to give weight to her legend. Viserys should be able to guide her through it.

For example, I don't think Relath's Half-Dragon babies should really qualify, or generally be able to take it. No real weight to it at this point.

I know DP closed the argument, just making my point.
Half-dragons were the ones who originally got the class, the Dragonblooded back in the time of the Red Dragon Empire, didn't have any special weight when they started, and yet they got the class, everything we know about the class from back at the birth of Valyria, tell us that it's a somewhat common class, for powerful Half-dragons.
I'm not sure it would even make mechanical sense for a half dragon.
Most of the benefits of the class are intrinsic to them from birth.

This class is more fitting for someone rediscovering his legacy.
Or I guess for 15 great Sorcerers striving to surpass their slavers and becoming greater than the True Dragon. There it works as well.
The first Dragon-blooded were all Half-Dragons, so there's clear proof there, that being a Half-Dragon qualify you for the class.
Precisely, one should require a certain metaphysical weight to even try it.
I'm quite sure they got the Dragonblooded class, before they became anything more, than random discontent Half-Dragon slaves.

This is how I understood the story at least, and I think the story of Valyria's rise, clearly show that Half-Dragons, have a high chance of qualifying for Dragonblooded.

Unfortunately I'll be going to bed soon, but let me at least try to craft an actual proposal:

[X] Visit the Orphne Court, exchange some pleasentries then once a suitable opportunity presents itself, challenge the Orphne King to another Duel
- [X] If we win, he becomes our Vassal for as long as our Imperium endures
-- [X] After our win, present Duesal's proposal as our idea of his vassalage
-[X] If he wins, he gets another shadow from us and access to the Shadow Tower even without swearing an oath of vassalage as long as he sticks to the rules

I'd rather just stick to full vassalage rather than putting that short a timer on it. What Moonsong agreed to -- vassalage for as long as the Imperium stands -- is more than fair.

We almost beat this guy with Fireballs back in the day. I expect him to try to redirect us, to replace the fight with some other "more fitting" challenge.

Also this. Even if he's stronger, we're a level 17/MR 2 Dragon Sorcerer. It's nowhere close to a fair fight.

I was thinking of just leaving it up to DP if some challenge really needs to be overcome here. Viserys is capable enough to do that IC.

I just felt that it was kinda weird to go up to fey and basically offer them the same kind of deal that we'd offer to regular human lords. But I guess you're right that DP will probably be able to make it thematically fitting. Oh well, I'll leave my proposal up and go to bed, we'll see if anybody else feels the same way I do. :) Good night guys.

My reasoning here is that the Orphne Court has been heavily shaped by their proximity to and dealings with Braavos and the Iron Bank, and thus more than pretty much any other Fey Court understands humanity. Now that Braavos has officially been vassalized, this is the perfect time to make our offer to the Orphne Court as Braavos' kinda-sorta-reflection in the Feywild.

... Speaking of courts, we still need to figure out how to vassalize whoever is in control of the Goblin Market in the middle of Lys. That's a bit of a loose end for us.

@Duesal I think we should frame our offer to the Orphne Court as an opportunity to bind their story to our own, to the rise of the Imperium, and to its continued prosperity.

The Court of Shadows is new, as Fey Courts go, just as the Imperium is a new nation upon the Plane of Balance. Both are made up of much older beings/institutions/cities, but together they form something new.

As for the new part of the vote introduced in the interlude, I think we can start off with this;

-[] Tyene will observe the pair of Golden Shield agents from afar, perusing their thoughts using Brain Spider. She will seek to learn all she can of the agents themselves, what kind of magic they possess and how powerful it is, and what their true mission here in Maidenpool is.

It's too early to act precipitously against them when we know so little of who they are or why they're here. Brain Spider allows her to target them from a thousand feet away.

Thanks, adding both to the vote.

She's more purebred than we are, Talon. Her family never married outside of Valyria, while the Targaryens had Andals, First Men, and even Rhoynar marry into their line. Your argument of bloodline purity doesn't hold up.

And again, she forcibly bonded to her dragon for centuries.

True Dragonblood doesn't thin, Duesal.

I'm disappointed.

OOC: I know you guys want fealty, but I need to know what form you expect that to take, military aid, information gathering, magical tutors, some combination of all of them? There is really no precedent to integrating an existing supernatural power structure so far. Remember, you also have to sell this so what you offer is just as important.

Uhh, fealty is fealty DP. What kind of title they end up with will dictate the details as a Ducal title is not equivalent to a Princely one but as far as I know and as far as I have voted, every vassal has the same rights and responsibilities to and from us as their Lord.

It might actually have turned Viserys Fey-like, had he won that mantle. Would be a rather different quest, leaning on narrative. King of an emerging Court, when he had not yet left a mark, a groove upon the world by his own merits?

Could very well have been subsumed.

Faerie Dragon, anyone? :p

This isn't supposed to be a gamble, it's supposed to be representative of the fact we have the greater strength and therefore greater capability to defend them hence they come under our aegis.

---[X] They will be asked to work closely with Garin and the Inquisition, as well as Alysande and the Silver Eye, along with cooperating with Imperial Officials in general.

The problem is why would the Orphne King agree to what will be an obviously humiliating defeat? If he wants to play some sort of game before vassalization that's fine, I'm trusting DP to navigate Viserys through whatever pops up.
