Of Bolts and Battle
Twentieth Day of the Eighth Month 293 AC
No one raises any further objection against 'Tor's' ghoulish choice of name, though Dany warns him not to play any cruel games with the Windward Society using any memories he may have inherited from the thrice-damned mage. To help keep him from the path of temptation you also require your new vassal to write a book containing all he knows of the twisted empire laying under the Shadow and its dreadful lord. Ink and parchment may yet reveal clues which would otherwise be passed over in simple conversation.
Bidding farewell to Svitran, you leave the temple silently with none daring to ask about the stranger you brought forth from the inner sanctum. As you make your way towards the tower to leave him in Teana's keeping, you are surprised to find Beryl hailing you near the Philosopher's Tree. The redheaded incarnate seems far more at ease than she had been last month, smiling as she greets you.
She reports that the engineering school is on track to opening next month, the influx of new talent from Myr and Lys going a long way towards ensuring that the new school will have a solid core of instructors. "I suspect we might develop a bit of a friendly rivalry with the new university since most of their founders are Braavosi," Beryl declares with relish. "It will help keep us sharp."
"Just as long as it's not
too sharp. We wouldn't want anyone trying to settle disputes with bolt throwers," Dany says in jest.
"I'll make sure drunken brawls are the worst the lawmen will have to handle," the incarnate replies in like manner, though there is an edge of seriousness to it just the same. Beneath her fiery manner Beryl shares Lya's thoroughness for any project she takes on.

Returning home for dinner you are pleased to find Bronn, Tyene, and Leila returned from their expedition, with tales of conquest and settlement in the wild lands of the Rhoynar. The sellsword in particular seems determined to assure everyone that his deeds there more than make up for missing so much of the melee. Leila, however, seems far grimmer than you had seen her. At first you suspect it is just the return of old sorrows come back to haunt her, but there is steel behind her gaze, a newfound determination. Her familiar seems content to leave her mistress to her thoughts rather than nuzzle her hand or settle in her lap to distract her.
The tale that comes out is gruesome as it is tragic, a young woman slain by a sadistic fey playing games with one of the brigand lords who had surrendered to your companions. "I can't just sit and whisper spells into talismans others will bear in battle," Leila confesses. "I have power, more power than that poor girl ever had, and I can become more skilled,
better, so that next time I won't be left holding a body."
A grim place to have found one's self confidence to be sure, but everyone around the table commends her resolve while Tyene is quick to add her own praise for all the help Leila has already been making peace with the more kindly of the local fey.
"So are you interested in trying out for the team fights?" Bronn interjects.
"I'm not... I don't want to play at fighting," the golden-haired mage replied. Then likely fearing she had given offense she adds: "I mean... there's nothing wrong with that, but I..."
"I've found it helps to practice when the stakes aren't for blood," the sellsword replies, waving away her apology. "It helps to plan with a cooler head, not to mention being able to try something that
might be stupid when you aren't betting your life on it."
"Umm... I'll think about it," Leila replies, still dubious, not wanting to put herself forward before the crowds.
For the rest of the meal you are careful to keep the conversation to lighter fare.
