Let me guess. They found a good spot on the coast of what used to be Zhamettar? It's the only large river in the area as far as I know.

Yes, that's the river.

Wait, really? I thought anyone with enough brains could learn to be a wizard! Wasn't that why Dalla was suddenly so concerned about lowlanders in the long term when she met Lya, for example?

Way back at the beginning of the quest Viserys theorized that you need some magical affinity to work magic, though that is far more common than awakening as a sorcerer mystic or other spontaneous class. For instance even Ser Richard could have been a wizard if head the inclination.

Alright. We will stay the fuck away from that place.

Well, so much for that.

The river referenced here is the Zamoyos, which is roughly equivalent to the Amazon river. It comes from deep within the continent and branches into a huge delta, full of mangrove forests, swamps, and thousands of tiny lakes and rivers. This being Sothoryos, the river is of course filled with piranhas, diseases, rotting plants, quicksand and alligators.

It's likely that the alligators are actually not native to the place, but that they were brought here from elsewhere. In the delta, there was once a city called Zamettar. It was a decently prosperous Ghiscari colony, back in the day when they had an empire. During the 4th Ghiscari War, Valyria finally conquered the place and either destroyed it or abandoned it some time later. This being ancient history, it's hard to say. What we do know is that the city was abandoned for more then a thousand years already when Nymeria was leading the Rhoynar exodus south. At this time, the Basilisk Isles were a pirate infested hell-hole, instead of a Valyrian colony as they would alter become, and after a disagreement with those nice chaps, the Rhoynar settled in the ruins of Zamettar. They also settled another ruin further up the Zamoyos. However, they were plagued by the wildlife and disease and when the other colony suddenly vanished completely, they abandoned Zamettar and headed towards Dorne.

That other city? That is a lovely place called Yeen. Nobody knows who built this city or when, though scholars agree that it appears not to be of human make. The evidence for that is that the city is made from huge blocks of stone, too heavy for any man to have ever moved them, and nobody knows what to make of the black, oily stone itself either. Yeah. It's an entire city made out of Bilestone. And something seems to still live there. Said something being scary enough that even the wildlife stays the hell away from the place.

So in short: Let us stay the fuck away from the river leading to Aberration City.

Yeen is a very special hell. It's the sort of thing I'd want Bloodraven's advice on before we make any serious moves against it.

Hey, @Goldfish. I found something fancy while poking the Sothoryos articles.

Basilisk

Apparently the blood of a basilisk prompts a murderous rage. Somewhat related, we got hydra blood which DP confirmed could be refined to temporarily grant Fast Healing.

I think we got a few mighty fine ingredients to research our own K-10. Though the name Kali's Blood would be more appropriate, given the base substances.

What are the chances when others come along to get Walder Primes allegiance he'll ask for that charter we offered but is refused? We are giving him more then others would give with even common courtesy.

It's just magical affinity, even if you aren't born with it, getting a small sliver of it isn't that hard, Yss would probably bestow you with the barest sliver, for a few dozen cows or sheeps, I mean magical affinity as opposed to magical potential, is the kind of thing you have a chance of getting, because your mother was magically healed while pregnant, as you can have rather miniscule amounts of it.

Or this is how I have understood magical affinity, as you have a miniscule amount of it, if you have been permanently touched by magic in even the least way, which should mean you should be able to buy it from Yss for not that great a price, as he can just give you the cheapest blessing he can give, and you have a miniscule amount.

Like you sacrifice to get a snake tongue, and as this constitutes being changed by magic, you now qualify for learning Wizardry.

That picture of Castle Darry is not a castle. That thing is a manor house with delusions of grandeur. That thing is bloody indefensible against any foe more organized than random bandits. It has no battlements, no crenels, no machicolations, no arrow slits, that thing has nothing that allows its defenders to engage attackers safely. It is a shite artist's conception of what a castle looks like. I feel sorry for the Darry clan with the shite neighbours and territorial disputes if that thing is their main fortress. You wouldn't even need a full army to take that bloody thing.

Add in a few other odds and ends...

Flayleaf

Ruk Tar

Black Keif

...and we would have a pretty nice little combat drug.

Well, let me answer that question.

Your guide stops pointing downwards towards a squat menacing fortress of unadorned black stone that seems to have grown from the ocean bottom. From its center thick sulfurous fumes rise through the water in lazy eddies.

Ser Richard stops dead. "What?" you ask worried the poison is still festering within.

"The Black Walls," he whispers.... "Like the Hightower."

Seems Yeen has something to do with our friends beneath the sea. So let's just see it as a high level dungeon or a quest location to find out how to bar the 'Deep Ones' access to our plane.

As DP narrated when we visited it, they aren't on their first keep, or even their tenth, IIRC. Nor are they particularly wealthy at this point. They're probably just making do with what they can scrape up while maintaining a veneer of Westerosi respectability.

We know the Illithid aren't the only Aberrations that form the "Deep Ones" faction. They are allied, at the very least, with the Aboleths. There are a few other really unpleasant and powerful Aberrations they could be allied with, such as the Neogi or ancestral Grell.

Yeen and similar sites could belong to them or some other Deep One species.

From my understanding even a peasant can eventually become a high level wizard eventually. I mean d&d has plenty of instances of a random peasant becoming an expert magic user.

You just have to be a genius.

Just because you can learn Wizardry doesn't mean you have the attributes to excel at it. With an intellect far beyond human norm, you'll never be more than a hedge wizard unless you manage to scrape up enough cash to buy a high level Intelligence booster and even then you'll be subpar at best.
