I could actually understand an encounter like that for three reasons:
1. It's a puzzle encounter, and/or you are clearnly meant to be fleeing.
2. I know that the players have True Strike and Alter Fortune prepared.
3. The monster can be defeated through other means (drowning, grappling, touch attacks...) and they are reasonably feasible at this point.

I think the DM would like it to be a puzzle encounter, but having 4 huge things just roll up to a tavern and do 40d6 damage to everyone inside isn't the way to start one.

Alright.

Mind you that my proposal will be even more pricey, so I'm greatly leaning towards having one set of equipment for the ECL 5 build and another for ECL 8.
My proposal is just the basic, standard gear for the Initiates. We won't need to worry about the more advanced stuff for a while, though statting it out ahead of time doesn't hurt.

But DP, the point of being a GM is to win against your players :V
/sarcasm

No, seriously, some GMs see things this way. It's depressing.

I remember seeing a quest that was like that, to repeat someones quote of the GM, "I want to have fun too"

Which is something that has an unfortunate.. implementation/expression as the storyline is just the main pov people getting bitchslapped by rolls that are heavily negatively biased (a 1-5 is a hell of a lot more impactful than a 95-100).

  1. Sure,next update
  2. Yes, you do, do you want to interrogate it before going forward?
Yay, Lich skull!

Interrogation would be nice. Would it be okay if we question it OOC?

1. Is there a secret chest? If so, where is the focus?
2. Is there dangerous treasure aside from the Red Dragon Orb?
3. What other treasures are there hidden here?
4. What other ancient treasures does he know of? (repeat question if necessary, we want names and locations, hopefully the locations of other orbs)
5. Where is your phylactery?
6. Where is your spellbook?

That should be good for now.

I think Mel's presence and reactions make this worth doing IC.

Fair enough.

But it does have a spellbook, right?

I'm rather confused about its magic. In its debut update it had Sorcerer-only Wings of Cover, yet it also had a cleric spell.

If it's somehow figured out Wings of Cover without needing to be a Sorcerer, then Lya can potentially learn it.
Maybe it's a Mystic Theurge, or a Rainbow Servant, or it had a weird magic item.

The spell was not wings of cover fluff wise, it was something like Warding Sands, a product of the Qarthi magical tradition.

Trapsssss, or is that to be assumed to be asked IC?

Also, am confused why Viserys is going near the orb to begin with? I thought we were having non-dragons deal with it?

Edit: guards too, I suppose

So long as it has the same effect and Lya can copy all is well.

We have Mind Blank, we should be fine.

The reason others dealt with it was because Viserys was busy.

[X] Snowfire

Burny still hasn't appeared yet? Just how apostate should we be to get his attention?

We have not even gone maximum over apostate yet.

This conversation basically boiled down to razzing Burny a bit anyway.

Not a good time to play peekaboo I'm guessing. These days I am almost fucking certain that being a candidate for mantling Azor Ahai means that Burny can't directly manifest to denounce that candidate in any way unless they do something truly blasphemous which might also invalidate their candidacy.

It is the only explanation for our continued ability to tempt his high priesthood away from war and madness.

Yeah, it's not like we ever went up against anything that could potentially go through/around mindblank. *Cough* shadow king dude.

I mean, I'm not saying that Viserys going here is his doom or anything, but you are disconcertingly blasé about the idea of being a dragon going to a place where Dragonlords would probably not want dragons to go, to get an artifact used as a powerful ritual focus, one that enslaves (red) dragons. Not like that won't have a few pluses/additions to the generic dragon orb.

[ ] Stab yourself in the heart- Eat the orb for power.

Actually, @Snowfire, please greater shadow Enchantment a grand destiny for Viserys' to spend on will saves (4 X +4 on a bunch of possible things is very nice imo).

Edit: not arguing against going into the place of "fuck dragons, reds in particular" just pointing out that I find your lack of lack of faith of normal mindblank Vs stuff like mythic or quasi-divine effects/artifacts ect disturbing :p

Viserys still has Grand Destiny in effect, with at least two charges remaining.

I wonder how clouded Burny's vision of us is through Melisandre's senses? Everyone present but Melisandre herself is, and possibly her as well, as Mind Blanked.

He may be getting some really mixed signals, or none at all, depending on how the spell interacts with his ability to perceive the world through his follower's senses. @DragonParadox?
