This plot was explicitly meant to be time-consuming for us to clean up. I'd much rather nip it in the bud while we have our early intel.
It was meant to be.

If Zherys has a month or more to prepare for a war and be ready for to strike the moment things get hot while the Red side is confused and leaderless it might get a lot less so.

@DragonParadox
Did Varys know nothing about any extraplanar activities, particularly Illyrio's hideout, or did we just not get to that point yet?
We haven't gotten to that part. Only the Free Cities plots were covered. I don't think we've even touched any Essos plots east of the Bone Mountains yet.

I'm unenthusiastic to say the least.

Problem is that wouldn't discredit the Red God appropriately. And that is bad because his worshipers would become disgruntled and we have a lot of those.

See it as an opportunity.

Volantis is the heart of Rh'llor's power. Here we can prove to no doubt that the new leader of the Faith will have been aided by a Devil of Heresy. And is also connected to the murder of the decent former Highpriest.
If that doesn't undermine their legitimacy nothing will.
We just have to reveal the right parts of Varys' plot at the right time. It's a delicate matter, but if @Azel sees a chance to make it work, it might be worth it. Do you?

Simultaneously successful warfare against the main temple there will reduce the military power of the faith significantly.

@DragonParadox, what about the cities west of the Bone Mountains that aren't Free Cities?

Saath, Morosh, New Ibbish, Ibb, Slaver's Bay, Lazosh, etc.

What machinations did Varys and Illyrio have there?

That's more like a conglomerate of dozens of actions.

I will throw together a proposal tonight. We will need every single Intrigue action we can get for this.
We'll probably need to account for Bloodraven puppeteering Varys' simulacrum around, he'll need at least some of the network intact to do his best at Westeros...
But he'll also make subverting said network increasingly easier for us.

I see it as a big, time-consuming headache.

That's entirely possible, but I suspect curtailing the power of Burny's church will be a big, time-consuming headache no matter how we go on about it.

This seems less messy than continuing to do nothing about it, or trying to oppose them too openly without doing great damage to their popularity first.

Honestly, aside from that one devil that mind-controls Garth (becasue people want to go to him immediately to assure he's on our side, or something), I want to summon everyone at once and be done with that.
And then question them and summon their underlings.

And suddenly, Mammon's operations will take a hit unlike any other we've yet to deal them.

I don't even care for Larder right now, breaking apart every plot Varys had sown for Noodle is so cathartic I can't even.

Holy shit. That Pentoshi plan would have been horrible!
I'm sure we could have resolved the situation with our epic socials, but it would definitely have sucked.

Oh, and all the rest also sounds bad. Glad to see we got him before he could get too far. Bloodraven is the only shadowy plotter we'll have acting in our lands!

@DragonParadox How much personal attention do we need to devote to averting Varys' various plots? How much can be dealt with by contacting allies off screen, such as Zherys, Bennerro, the Sealord, etc, via Whispering Brazier or Sending, to warn them of the plots?

There is so much shit we've learned of that Varys has been stirring up, if we we spend the rest of the month on it personally we might be able to straighten it out. Delegating, where possible, would be hugely beneficial.

Ultimately that's your decision, but for what it's worth Viserys trusts Zherys to handle the devil and red priests.

I for one would rather deal with the Devil in Volantis ourselves. Zherys is too burned to lead a anti-Devil crackdown on the Red Faith. They will assume it a power grab and plunge the city into a devastating civil war.

Also, I like Benerro. He is reasonable and clever. Having his endorsement would go a long way to calming down the Reds under our rule. I'm not really expecting him to declare us Azor Ahai, but if we can talk some theology with him, we might be able to leverage our good standing into him at least not suppressing the notion.

Overall, I would like to jet over to Volantis asap abd deal with this. We had a minor action for this anyway.

[X] Essos Intel 2.0
-[X] Were Varys and Illyrio active anywhere else on Prime Material aside from Westeros and Essos? If so, where? What were they doing?
-[X] ESSOS CONTINUED
--[X] Get intel on all known active plots (by Varys and Illyrio or others) east of the Bone Mountains
--[X] Ask what leaders they've killed, which ones they've subverted, which ones are their enemies, which ones they plan to target, etc.
--[X] Ask about any and all rumor-worthy events east of the Bone Mountains that we may want to pay attention to.

-[X] GOLDEN COMPANY & TIAMAT
--[X] Which governments support them, and which ones are their enemies?
--[X] What is their current location, and what is their overall schedule over the next few months?
--[X] Get precise information on their strength and numbers
---[X] How many wyverns are there? How many mages? How many clerics? How powerful are they all? Etc. If we'd want to know it, Varys needs to cough it up now.
---[X] We want specific details on the Golden Company PCs, their abilities, and their magic items
--[X] Ask about the artifacts they just stole from Nefer and their progress on artificially aging the Red Dragon
---[X] Following up on the artifacts, ask what powerful magic items they already have.
--[X] Ask about Tiamat's progress with dragons in general, if she's managed to find more eggs and hatch more dragons or different types other than Red, etc.
--[X] Ask how many dragons Varys knows the Golden Company can call on -- we want info on types, their ages, and if they have any special tricks like magic items (clarification on exactly what age the "Older than Adult" Shadow Dragon was would be good)
--[X] What blessings has Tiamat granted, aside from giving permanent Mind Blanks to the four Red Dragon Wyrmlings that already hatched?
--[X] Ask about all the Golden Company bases, and every set of ruins they planned to raid or already raided as well as their goals therein. Follow up and ask about what great treasures they are aware of in Prime Material, their exact locations, and the dangers guarding the treasures.
--[X] Ask about Illyrio
---[X] What abilities does he have?
---[X] What magic items does he have?
---[X] What plots are Illyrio in charge of?
---[X] Who the hell is he?
---[X] Ask Bloodraven to pass on all of the cyphers that Varys and Illyrio used with each other. This should save you time in the future when you retrieve more documents.
--[X] Ask about F!Aegon
---[X] Where is he?
---[X] Who is minding him?

-[X] EXTRAPLANAR ACTIVITIES
--[X] Ask about the Shadow Plane fortress
---[X] Where is it and how do you get to it?
---[X] What dangers are on the way, what spies are placed in the path, and what defenses are on the exterior?
---[X] Who or what guards the fortress?
---[X] How does one best either sneak inside or break inside?
---[X] What is the complete layout of the fortress and the immediately surrounding area?
---[X] Aside from serving as a fortress, what operations are based in the fortress? Experiments?
--[X] What allies do Varys and Illyrio have off the plane?
--[X] What other safehouses are there?
--[X] What enemies have they made?
--[X] What great treasures are they aware of off the plane and where are they located?

I'm also guessing that's a no to whether or not he got a cleric to hit him with Regenerate.

Most likely not. He's...I'm not going to even try to analyse him, but simply put, using magic to heal himself like that would probably be a fracture point for his entire psyche. Would rather not go into it any further than that.
