It was sometime around noon, and while the sun shone bright in the sky, it couldn't be considered a nice day by any metric.
It had already been a good two hours since the group left for their trip to find out what's happening at Kamp Krusty, so the atmosphere in the car had been…somewhat tense.
The driver, Fat Tony, was in a foul mood after failing to find one of his lieutenants on top of learning that he might have put his son in danger.
The Finale was napping in the back seat alongside Abe's new pets Badger and Crippler. They seemed to have warmed quickly to the old sniper.
The Kaiser wasn't inside the car at all, instead riding his recently found horse who, in its zombified state, was easily capable of keeping up with the speeding car. The undead German had an untroubled look on his face, more focused on the fact he was riding his horse than the reason they were traveling.
And during all that, Abe couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by recent events; The knowledge that Bart and Lisa were prisoners of some crappy Kamp kept weighing on his mind. Not only that, the thought of his last failed attempt to reach out to Homer was constantly on the edge of his mind, refusing to leave.
And between that was the fact that as he traveled through the road, he couldn't help but feel a sense of…Nostalgia could be the word. Abe realized halfway through the trip that this had been his first time he left Springfield in over 10 months. And even if Kamp Krusty was fairly close by, seeing roads that he should know quite well feel unknown to him makes him realize how much things have changed. Not only the state of the U.S but about nowadays regarding his youth.
He really was getting too old to get into these kind of scruffles, wasn't he?
Old age aside, he really couldn't allow himself to wallow in pity like this. His family needed him, probably more than ever, so he needed his head in the game.
Just then, Abe noticed the car slow down and drive off road. Curiously, the elder checked the map they brought, which had the location of the Kamp marked with a big "X". Abe was pretty sure they still had less than an hour's travel to get there.
"Hey what gives?" Abe asked Tony, unsure of what he was doing. The mafioso had been scowling since they left the city, all while smoking through a few cigars. "We're pretty close to the place, shouldn't we just keep driving there?". He asked this as the car passed a clearing and began to park the car behind some trees.
The italian didn't answer immediately, instead taking a long puff from the last drags of his cigar, and, after making sure it's put out, chucks it out of the window and pulling another one out from his jacket, lighting it a swift motion.
Abe took a moment to wonder just how many cigars the mafioso has in his person. Has he been using all the money from his salary on them? Or does he have a stash somewhere?
…Abe realizes he really hasn't actually taken the time to get to know Fat Tony or any of his other workers. He ought to fix that soon.
Fat Tony answers back with a question after taking another puff. "I would reckon the car and our German friend would make our arrival pretty noisy, wouldn't it?", He says with a smirk. Angry he may be, Fat Tony keeps a tight grip on his emotions. "It'd be a shame if we spoiled our surprise visit beforehand. Am I right?"
Abe agreed. "Alright then. We'll need to walk through the woods to get there, but that shouldn't be hard", Abe says as he checks the map one last time.
The mafioso nods, his gaze moving to the backseat to the sniper napping with the dogs. "Hey forest geezer, get up!" He calls out as he turns off the car.
With a shake The finale wakes up, dirt and leaves breaking off his suit and dirting the car seat. Finale reaches for his rifle in the adjacent seat as he looks around quickly.
"Aaaahhh, is it time now?" He questions, looking out of the car's window and seeing the forest around them. He puts a gentle hand to Crippler's head, the old dog waking when he does.
"Almost." Abe says as he pockets the map and opens the door, Fat Tony doing the same. "We're going to walk the rest of the way, you up for that?"
The Finale gives a jovial laugh, making dirt fall off his beard. "You won't hear a protest from me, the forest and I are one." He says as he, in a motion too quick for someone of his age, almost combat rolls out of the car, rifle already primed for use.
Crippler and Badger follow soon after, wandering and sniffing around the clearing. Both hounds seem to take nicely to being in the forest. Well, mostly Badger does; after a while Crippler just sits down and begins to rest, content to leave his partner to explore the area by himself.
A few moments later the sound of hooves could be heard, Kaiser Wilhelm and his horse finally catching up to them.
"Vhats ze hold up, freunde?" The undead German asks as his horse stops alongside the car, huffing and puffing. "Something came up?" He asks as he takes a look around the place.
Fat Tony is the one that answers him. "Not quite, big fella." He says with a puff. "But we are going to walk the rest of the way." He takes a moment to inspect the zombified horse. "And we can't let them catch wind of us coming." He says as he points his cigar at them.
Abe and The Finale also look at the undead animal, probably thinking the same thing.
After a moment Kaiser Wilhem seems to realize what they are getting at.
"Abandon mein Horsey?!" He asks with a gasp. "Nein! Das werde ich niemals tun!" He says with an offended tone.
"Let me bring him!" He pleads with puppy eyes…and somehow the horse seems to be doing the same. "I assure you gentlemen, no one vill know Horsey is around, ja?" He implores, not willing to part with his horse.
Fat Tony gets an annoyed look on his face, and Abe seems to realize that this might develop in a fight, something they really couldn't afford right now. He decided to step in before things escalated.
"Fine, you can bring your horse!" Abe exclaims, deciding to humor the German. "Just…make sure to not make too much noise."
"Ja! Wunderbar!" The zombie German exclaims, as his horse starts running around in circles around the group.
The Finale doesn't seem to mind the addition, while Fat Tony just rubs his face. "Bloody wonderful." He mutters, not content at all with this outcome.
"Uhhh...fine." The mafioso says as he looks to the rest of the group. "Let's just hurry, we're burning daylight."
On that, Abe could agree heartfully. They had come this far, they weren't gonna stop now.
________________________________________________________________________
The group began the trek through the forest in a determined manner. This time, The Finale took the lead after receiving the map from Abe. Now that they weren't following the road to get to their destination, they had to deal with the sea of brown and green that surrounded it.
For most people, it would have taken some time, effort and more tools than a simple map to get to their destination. Luckily, this group had someone who basically spent most of his life inhabiting places like this. With him leading the men (and hounds and a horse), it was practically impossible for them to get lost. The group didn't just walk in a straight line, the old sniper had them take twists and turns every few minutes, taking the most accessible path so the rest could keep up with him without much effort.
Abe, Fat Tony and even Wilhelm, who couldn't keep riding his horse and was forced to walk alongside him, were thankful for this. Even though one was still pissed off, and the other was too sad because he couldn't keep acting like a cowboy.
During all this time, the group was mostly in silence, aside from Grant giving out indications. Grunts of understanding and the random snort from the zombified equine in the group, where the only time sound was made.
And while the old man in a gill suit could have been fine with leaving things as they were until they found the place, someone had to go and break the silence, as always.
"I have to say, I never expected to do this kind of stuff again.." Fat Tony begins, as he pays attention to not trip with a few tree roots, and moves a branch out of the way. "Walking through a forest, rescuing some of my people…ice a few bodies." He comments with a somewhat nostalgic tone. "Man, this brings me back to my rookie days, just need a shovel now." He finishes as he shakes his head.
"Ov what? Vhen you started vorking mit zhe mob?" Kaiser Wilhelm comments, curiosity picked, as he walks too, with the reins of his horse on his hands. "Hov vas it? Is it as zhe mafia mofies that Ich vatch mit Herr Flander's kids on zhe "T.V", uh?"
Fat Tony can't help but snort at the German's question. "Please, those movies don't compare to the real stuff. Those Hollywood cretins don't have an idea what mafias are nowadays." Fat Tony hums for a moment. "Mmm…there's an idea there for a quick buck perhaps."
"Still, back to my rookie days." He continues as the rest of the group listens. "It's really not something out of the unordinary. I started from the bottom as anyone else; cleanin' the don's place, collecting the monthly protection money, teaching the pizza guy a lesson when he arrived late without orders…." He finishes with a dark tone as his eyes narrow, deep in memories.
"So you really started as a Henchman?" Abe questions as he follows the group. "I really couldn't imagine that to tell the truth." He shrugs, not sure what else to say.
"Everyone has to start from somewhere y'know?" The Italian comments as he puffs from his cigar. "Took me a while to get where I am, but I cannot say I'm proud of what I had." He sighs. "Oh man, now and then, I wish things were back to how they were, when the only thing I had to deal with was with the police, it was so easy."
"You just mean with Chief Wiggum, right?" Abe asks with curiosity. "Surely the city police wasn't always that…bad?"
"Ohhhh, you would not believe me but every police chief has been a Wiggum…in one way or another." The former mobster says with a chuckle.
"Scheisse! Has zhe polize been zhat imcompetent?" Wilhelm questions too, getting into the conversation.
"The more things change, the more they stay the same." Fat Tony shakes his head. "For better or for worse."
And quickly, what was before a tense moment seems to leave, giving way for a more relaxed environment. Even though they were aware how serious the situation was, Abe and the Kaiser listened with attention to some of the stories that the mobster had to tell about his first days in the mafia. On the other side, it seemed that the chance to retell some of his stories helped calm Fat Tony somewhat.
But while this nice reprieve, couldn't last. Something that The Finale had to remind the group.
"Quiet everyone." The sniper said with a low tone, but his voice carried weight on this forest, making the group stop chattering and focus on the old man with the rifle. "We are coming close to the place, best to not draw any attention." He kept moving, easily avoiding any obstacle in his path and barely making any noise.
With talking over, the whole group was once again focused. It was around 3 or 4 Pm, Abe was pretty sure, his lack of a watch made it difficult to confirm the time.
As the group finished trekking through the last set of tree lines, on orders of The Finale, they quickly duck behind some shrubbery that was nearby, as they finally had the Kamp in sight.
And what they found wasn't to their liking.
"Vell…zhat does not seem like a children's camp, is it?" Kaiser comments as he pets his horse (Who was ducking too), while observing the place.
"No. No it doesn't." Abe comments with equal worry and anger to his voice. At least he knew that Bart wasn't making things up…not that was much of a comfort.
What the group was seeing was in equal parts comforting and worrying. Comforting cause they knew that the kids were really in trouble and wasn't a prank and worrying cause…the kids were basically in trouble.
The group was still quite a ways from actually reaching the camp, several hundred meters at least, a kilometer at most, but they had a clear view of most of the site.
What seemed once like a Krusty themed Children's camp now had lost its charm. A rusty but thick metal fence covered basically the whole area. There was a main gate that seemed to be reinforced with lots of steel, but…not like actual steel doors, more like someone welded lots of metal scrap and decided to make a gate with it.
2 guards could be seen standing in front of the gate, wearing a mix between camp attendant and military clothes.
A few cabins could be seen through the fences and gate, and some watchtowers seemed to be placed all around the place.
At the back a lake could be found, but from what The Finale could tell from his scope, there didn't seem to be any boats or people around.
"Mmm…Okay then." The Finale murmured as he watched the place with the scope of his rifle. "8..9…10… Counting the guys in the gate and the towers, there's 10 people patrolling the place. At least that are outside, there could be more people inside the cabins." He informs the rest after a few minutes of checking the place. "No cabin has windows to look through." He adds.
"What about the kids?" Fat Tony snarled at the man, his anger not at the sniper, but at the sight of the place. "Didn't pick any of them?"
"Nah, only guards." The Finale responds as he keeps looking through his scope. "They should be inside one of their cabins…hopefully." He says with a serious tone.
"Grrrr…Fine then!" Fat Tony exclaims as he stands up. "Let's get this over with!" He says with a foul tone.
"Vait a minute." Kaiser Wilhelm says as he reaches out and grabs one of Fat Tony's arms. The Italian tugs as his hand, trying to get free from the grasp, but doesn't quite manage to get rid of the zombie's hand, keeping him in place. "You cannot just rush zhe place!"
"Our kids are in there and those psychos could be doing God-Knows-What to them!" Fat Tony shots back. "I'm gonna knock down their door and tell them to give Michael and the rest of the kids back…or else." He finishes, teeth bared
"Rushing out won't do those kids any good either." The Finale chimes in, still inspecting the Kamp from the scope of his gun. "Haste on our part might make the situation worse. Give me time to do more recon and once the sun sets down, we shall sneak inside." He offers to, as he turns around to address the rest of the guys.
"You want us to wait?" Fat Tony says apaulled. "We don't know what's going on with the kids! Now's not the time to wait, we need to act now and teach those dead men a lesson!!" He says, cracking his fingers. He then turns to look at Abe. "C'mon, back me up here! We can't keep dilly dallying." He says, hoping Abe would agree with him.
The Finale and Kaiser turn to look at Abe too, waiting to hear his opinion.
Becoming the center of attention out of nowhere made the old man anxious for a second. What a way to put him in the spot. Still, he realized that discussing won't get them anywhere. Abe took a deep breath and began thinking, trying to get a full grasp of the situation.
The Kamp seemed to be some sort of base apparently, with somewhat lackluster fortifications, but fortifications nonetheless. There was a fence that covered the whole area alongside some guards for some surveillance. Not only that, they haven't seen the hair of any of the kids trapped inside. Most likely they are in one of the cabins in the center of the camp.
The more he reviewed the information, he realized that on one hand, rushing in could work. If they hit them hard and fast they could overpower the guards in the gate and get access to the rest of the place, he was fairly certain that the 4 of them (alongside his hounds), could make short work of a simple dozen of guards. Though The Finale had a point of not knowing if there were more people inside the cabins, if they were unlucky and took too much time to reach the kids, a nasty surprise could be around to greet them, making the situation dicier.
On the other hand, sneaking in had merits too. Even with the fence and guards, the place was too big for them to cover all ground, there should be several blind spots from where they could infiltrate the place and look for the kids. At the very least, infiltrating from the front gate, the fence, or even from the lake seemed like viable choices.
The problem would be if they were caught off guard while sneaking, they would have to deal with the guards and whatever other surprises they had from a bad position most likely.
In the end, their priority was to get the kids out there, it doesn't matter what's inside waiting for them, they will deal with it, one way or another.
With that Abe decided to:
[ ] Full Frontal Assault towards the Kamp. (Fat Tony was right, they couldn't just sit around and wait, the group needed to confirm if the kids were safe. They would need to make their way through the security and extract the kids before the guys in charge are able to form a response, if they are able to begin with.)
[ ] Sneak in the Kamp. (The Finale and Kaiser had a point, rushing in like a fool could get you guys in bigger trouble, they had the element of surprise on their side. If they played their cards right, they could get in and out of the place with the kids none the wiser. Though waiting until the sun sets didn't sit right with Abe and Fat Tony, some sacrifices needed to be made. The question now would be from which way to sneak inside.
-[ ] Front Gate (Direct access to the rest of the Kamp, though this is where there is more security, being found out here means things will develop into a full out fight pretty fast.)
-[ ] From The Sides. (Flanking the place and entering from a weak spot in the fence could be an easier way to go, not many guards patrolling the area, but would be quite a way from the cabins, and more chances to being found out as the guys move towards there)
-[ ] From behind, through the Lake. (According to The Finale, the lake was totally empty, no guards patrolling the area or anything like that, might take the longest time to get inside, but if you do so then you could catch the guys inside with their pants down. The Kamp would be totally open to the group if they can enter from there.
…But why did Abe have a weird feeling from looking at the lake?)
