@HeroCooky Why is A Living World 'canon TBD'? I'm partially just curious, partially asking so I can write better to canon in the future.

Edit: Oh no! Sorry to hear life's been a lot. Take your time.

  • [X] Plan: The War Pack Hunts
-[X] The primary objective will be for the three pilots to harass and flank Marie-France, prioritizing avoiding blows over getting in decisive strikes. The goal will be to surround her and strike from behind, outside the arc of the Gallant's Ion shield.
-[X] Kiri Milize is designated as the primary striker, as her weaponry is excellent for wounding the Knight Gallant and making it more vulnerable for the kill. The others are not to pass up good opportunities, but their initial goal is to distract Marie France and punish any gaps in her defense.
-[X] Mobility is king, and not letting anybody get pinned down and picked off is a priority.

055.M43 - The Ruling Came
It began...

With four feet hitting the ground.

Packed and cracked dirt compressed under the sudden violence inflicted upon it as three Karnivores and one Knight began to move.

The latter moved, violently, thrusting itself forward with cackling glee within its Throne, gauntlet flexing and chainsword roaring its desire for violent carnage.

The first three threw themselves away.

Kiri flung herself backward as fast as she could, her Mechadendrites churning across the ground to prevent herself from falling as her Karnivore fled from the oncoming storm of murder and cold steel.

Xexes flung herself to the side, her Star Guard manually opening fire with furious bolts of light impacting uselessly against the Gallant's Ion Shield, like the stings of flies upon the back of a titan striding across the land.

Violet Skies pushed her limbs against the ground, moving the very earth beneath herself away from her body, great torrents of energy and fire erupting from her back as her Star Impulse added its furious bark to the roar from her back; fire and flame joined by light and plasma.

Maryie-France did not care one whit, her shield holding and her prey stumbling away like an ungainly man seeking to escape an invitation to dance. Heavy steps of accelerating weight moved her body, the feeling of the stings from left and right ignored without care, their weapons unable to pierce the shield and offering no greater threat than that of children throwing rocks. This. This was what she lived for, what she trained for, she thought and laughed, a swipe of her gauntlet breaking the momentum of her chosen prey, her oversized mechadendrites doing all they could to keep her from falling to the side as she furiously pumped her limbs against gravity and foe to escape.

There would be no esc-

-Xexes slaughterclaw plunged into the side of the Gallant, a shower of sparks errupting as she tried to rip out anything of import, only to be rewared for her daring action with a backhand against her body. Tons of moving steel crushed the air out of her lungs, burned her bones, and froze her blood before she corrected herself mid-air to land in a controlled roll.

But the Gallant's attention had been taken long enough.

Like scavengers, Violet burned against the Knight, reaper held high and adding its no-less-furious demands for blood and slaughter to its adult cousin wielded by the Gallant just as Kiri snapped her 'dendrites forward, plunging them into gaps in the armor, malicious code and crackling tools severing a plate with furious efficiency.

Marie-France repaid that kindness with a parry against Violet, the smaller Armiger avoiding being flung away only by its sheer momentum, though it fell to the ground all the same, a gash of spilling guts and oils flooding from the wound. With one move dripping with contempt, the 'dendrites of Kiri were ripped from her body and ripped from the Karnivore, their Machine-Spirits thrashing violently within the machinery before falling limp and silent, seething in rage at the denied violence.

Just in time for Kiri to close the distance, her left hand raised, and her Sapphire-Dagger found itself in the exposed guts of the Knight.

Acid flooded Marie-France's mind, howling hatred thrummed in soul and flesh, the whispers of her ancestors mocked and cajoled, and eyes lit in brimstone fury.

Only the well-tested and thrice-confirmed safety limiters prevented Kiri from becoming nothing more than a puddle of flesh mixed in twisted metal upon the ground, a gauntlet to the face and torso, leaving no other conclusion to the cogitation units overseeing the duel.

"Kill" confirmed in such a matter, Thorn of Beauty turned, its flowering eyes landing on the pest that once again tried to plunge its impertinent claws into its form of beauty, and the chainsword answered in furious kind.

Warnings screamed through the mind of Xexes, her arm disabled and mobility severely impacted by the strike that would have exposed her body to the world and would have likely left wounds on her body from the amount of metal shorn away alone. Yet, she could still move. And so, she could fight, and if this was how she lost, Violet would be given all the time she needed to finish her unwatched rise into the skies to plunge unto the Gallant's back.

Once again, safeties screamed and mechanisms locked her punch to merely be severe enough to throw Xexes unto the ground, skipping twice before falling still and silent, the machine powered down by far more powerful machines than the spirit within itself could fight.

Delight raced through the poisoned veins of Marie-France, two down and only one to go, and so she turned around, mind scanning for the flying pest as the gauntlet crackled and chainsword roared...

Only to stare at the feet of the Howler, perfectly aligned with her face, a scream of primal anger rippling through the muscles and fur of the Yeeni as she physically threw the larger Gallant unto the ground and destroyed its head with weight added to momentum and the violent halt thereof.

But Marie-France had not been chosen by her Knight and Ancestors for nothing.

Even as she fell, blinded and wounded, she turned her body, twisting against the screeching of metal and machinery, and turned herself from falling backward to a fall 180° from momentum supplied and applied with chainsword upon the ground. Like a beast upon four legs pouncing, she bounced off of the ground and raised her gauntlet, claws splayed and snarling lightning crackling between the digits, ready to swipe right and crush the harlot that had ruined months of painting...only to fall limp and skid for several dozen meters as Violet jumped away, wary for several seconds as to the cause.

And then the ruling came.

Kiri Milize's Thrust-Dagger's Machine-Spirits had done their work and labor, the Gallant no longer able to defend itself as its Throne and Pilot were severed violently for a fraction of a second, enough for the referee to judge she had lost.

By technicality, but a loss all the same. If this had been no duel, Violet would likely have found herself dead within ten seconds, the swipe of the gauntlet crushing her Howler without care, but a duel this was, and a duel it remained.

Two fell for the last to triumph.

Brans erupted into cheers as the world had won its right to secede and enter the Federation.

The Valan Purification:
(6-Hour Moratorium)
[] Hymnal And Lord
(A Federation Hymnal and Eternity Lord discuss the differences of their psykana over tea.)
[] Brother And Soldier
(Space Marines are called Angels of Death not without reason. A soldier learns that legends are no comparison to the truth.)
[] Serf And Captain
(When fleets clash, even a minor upset can be decisive.)

That was too close to comfort. If we did the duel a turn sooner...

At least that mess is sorted now, and positive relations established, which for our diplomatic playstyle is all that matters.

Heyyy. +1 world, new Knight tech and info about and better relations with the Black Ash, access to the three systems of Where Iron Screams, Where Gods Die, and Where Dreams Bloom. That seemed to go pretty well!

Not to mention the precedent that we can duel the Black Ash to take over their planets. Methinks that if we do a couple of research/military actions to build bigger and better knights based on their examples we will both have bigger and better knights & we'll be able to replicate this feat as part of a takeover.

After all, you need to customize your diplomatic approaches. For the Ashan that means saving them from orcs, showing them the size of our economy and then paying them off. For the Black Ash that means putting skilled women in giant robots.

I actually like [] Brother And Soldier the most. I love the Lamenters, and especially the way they interact with normal people.

I think the best thing for us would be to absorb the Black ash Clan but allow them to set up another Knight Order that'll be mostly female.

Hell, once we've gotten the Knights reverse engineered we can basically bribe more and more Black Ash Clan worlds/noble houses with freshly built Knights.

Edit: Also, the Lamenters are at 20 companies. That's a lot of Marines. And as the Federation grows the Lamenters will grow as well.
