Well Alicent can either be close by and in a relationship with us or she can have a husband with a castle and lands. Doing both sounds tricksy.

I think the Tyland/Alicent marriage is pretty good, particularly if she starts to learn a few lessons from her very competent husband and father. Not sure if canon Alicent is actually uh...good at anything. It would be pretty cool to make her a Queen of Thorns type. She would continue the tradition Otto started of being a incredibly influential politician even without inheriting anything.

If we marry Laenor, then we'd both be married into two very wealthy houses, together we could be the new power couple that does projects to improve Westeros, like the Kingsroad. The Dream Team!

Also allow us to meet her for, ahem, "Fiduciary planning to maximise profits for a fiscal year~" if ya know what I mean.

If we're that concerned about being able to regularly meet Alicent for "reasons" then landed lords can and do also act as courtiers in the capitol. The current Master of Laws, Lyonel Strong, is lord of Harrenhal, and during the main series Mace Tyrell acts as master of ships while still being lord paramount of the reach.

In such cases what seems to happen is that the landed lord arranges for a steward to manage their demense while they're away in King's Landing.

Yeah but Lords of any real significance would only leave their own holdings for a Small Council position. We won't be able to appoint those for probably a decade or more, and that's a long time to make Otto wait.

I guess some Crownlander lords may stay primarily in Kingslanding, but those are usually pretty locked in or minor houses anyway.

[x] Plan Safe Curiosity v2.0
-[X] Meet Alicent in the Dragon Pit when you tend to Syrax.
-[X] Agree to your father's suggestion. It will be held in the garden's with you flying overhead.
-[X] Bring up her cats. She seems quite fond of the beasts.

I feel like worrying about what Alicent's kids would inherit if she married a second son like Tyland is a bit silly. Both sides of the family would be absurdly wealthy, even before getting into the royal favor of being a member of the council and a close friend of Rhaenyra. They might not inherit a castle, but they could get a knighthood pretty easily.

Also Tywin who was Hand of the King for Decades and in the show says flat out he will not see Casterly Rock again before he dies and he probably had expectations of living another decade or so. And Lord Corlys was Master of Ships until just recently and he's lord of Driftmark.

The issue with a Tyland is that despite being the brother of a Lord Paramount, is ultimately just a courtier. He inherits nothing, and would be able to leave little for his children with Alicent, since small council seats are for the most part non heritable. Arguably matches with lords from lower ranked families would be better, because they would still have a demense of their own to make Alicent lady of and leave to one of her children.

It's the sort of thing I suppose we should clarify with Alicent to see what her preferences are.

I think Tyland makes sense as a potential match for us. He would also potentially work as a match for Alicent, in that case we'd probably reward them both with some land in the Crownlands or something like that.

Of course these are just possibilities, I don't think we should push for any actual marriage matches until after our royal progress. Just because I suggest a match does not mean I am married to it. Though a Lannister match would greatly decrease the threat of any siblings usurping us, as it would take away their strongest probable supporter.

It's one of the stronger possible matches after Laenor and Borros.

I'd be fine asking about the westerlands, but asking about her cats is so banal and boring I can't abide it. It's safe, sure, but we're not going to get her measure at all with that.

Good point, changed my plan vote to include asking about the Westerlands instead. Still think cats will be okay as a question though. My main thing is that we ought to push for the Sept for the marriage. That's where weddings are held after all.

[X] Meet Alicent in the Dragon Pit when you tend to Syrax.
[X] Agree to Lord Westerling's suggestion. It will be held in the Sept.
[X] Talk about her home. You know little of the Crag or the Westerlands in general. Perhaps she could tell you more about them.

It's time for Girl Friend to meet Best Girl.

Also I'm choosing to read far too much into the cat descriptions and expect to get three new siblings from Step-mom. One will be majorly protective while physically taking after one side of the family entirely and the other two will be a mix-and-match of Valyrian and Westerosi traits. The obsession with sunbathing isn't really connected, it's just a thing they do even though none of them tan well.

Tbh, a cat brazenly attacking the heir of the Seven Kingdoms on sight kinda made me think of that one cat from the Red Keep in the novels. Balerion, Rhaenys' pet cat, who went on to steal a chicken right from Tywin's plate at a dinner and claw Joffrey. You can't convince me that Rhaenys didn't death-warg into her.

...granted, Westerlings are generally not known for that, but still, an extraordinary move for a cat.

The image I used was of Balerion, because that cat is one of my favorite minor characters. Just a cat with a massive grudge.

And yeah Johanna's cat has audacity.

Should we talk to an Alchemist for a 2nd opinion on our father's health issues?
Think for next turn we get more involved with what's happening on the Stepstones…

Clarifications on Canon
I realized I have been asked about this a few times but have never clarified it in a threadmarked post. So here's my general rule for canon in this. The Overwhelming amount of the time things were stick to Show canon, save obiviously for things that have been changed because of this quest. There are a few exceptions to that such as the future lord frey and his canonical wife and maybe the ages of a few other people if I think Fire and Blood offers something more interesting than the show in that situation. But general rule is people, ages, dates all are mostly tied to HotD canon rather than the books.

Though don't expect events in the Stepstones to play out like canon because I feel like how the show handled it (Daemon and Corlys somehow being on the verge of losing after two years of conflict) was more due to the needs of the narrative structure season one had and the general entertainment need for a big climatic fight than it making sense story wise. So just keep that in mind going forward.

That *is* a bit silly, given dragons make any major fleet battle basically a guaranteed win, but I suppose if the triarchy was pulling brutal guerrilla war tactics on *every* island along the way, Corlys could believably be running into manpower issues after having to send in the infantry to root them out. I doubt he can really match the manpower of 3 city states with just the narrow sea houses. Especially if they were sending people to storm fortifications to take them intact instead of melting them with dragons. They *are* rather hesitant to jump straight to Harrenhalling places in the show. I wouldn't really call that losing per se, but running low on men and money from fighting the war without support from the rest of the kingdom could definitely turn it into an ugly draw.

I think the reason they used was that the Triarchy forces would hide inside deep caves where dragon fire could not burn them.

On the one island at least, yeah. But while that would let the triarchy not lose it's not exactly a winning strategy unless your opponent decides to storm your defensive position or you have a way to sally out and threaten enemy ships.

It seems just the sort of considerations that go into planning marriage alliances in Westeros. I suppose we'd just need to check with Alicent and see with her how much she herself cares about about stuff like having a prominent match, a son that's a lord, being a lady of a castle etc,etc compared to other considerations.

Though Otto would probably feel we did him much more of a solid if we arrange for his daughter a marriage with a lord paramount rather then a courtier, and Alicent would probably be able to help us more as the Lady of Casterly Rock or somewhere equally as prominent so long as she was happy with the match.

I mean yes, but while they're doing that their ships would be entirely vulnerable.

Sure hide your men on this barren rock, I'll just remove their means of actually contributing to anything, resupply, and escape.
