For reference:
There will be an investigation, because Tzar is suddenly dead, and because Boris will be looking for evidence of Weird Magic Stuff for his plan to get rid of the Lahmians. That's why I want to set off a knife inside the Tzar's body with the Matrix: it fits the "try to make it natural" clause, I promise you nobody remembers who was the Journeywoman that reverse-engineered an originally vampire's Matrix spell, but an examination will almost certainly see that wait what this makes no sense.

I don't think so. IIRC, most anatomical knowledge is being gained by cutting dead people open after stealing their bodies. So autopsies probably aren't a common thing. Might get the death written off as a sudden disease or poison though, if he goes "I have a great pain in my chest" or something, rather than being stabbed. Depending on your preference for his death (frame a Lahmian or not) this may or may not be a good thing.

Got convinced to use the Shadow Knife. Having an unnaturally perfect stab in the heart without a struggle that didn't even break his gown is, I think, supernatural enough upon investigation.

So there are like 4-5 plans that all basically do the same thing, I'll just vote for this. MMM + Shadow Knives is still good, but like. This is kind-of elegant in its simplicity.

Hey, left the quest for a while. What turn was it when we left Belegar and started working with the knife ears? Want to catch up.
Priority one is not getting caught, the Matrix takes an hour to implant. That increase in risk doesn't really seem worth it to me.
The starting point would be behind the sternum. There's not a 100% guaranteed kill, but there's not a lot of trajectories where that doesn't shred something a person generally don't want shredded.
That would be up to Boris. Kislev's culture doesn't really have funerals when someone actually dies, they hold the funeral when they become an adult, so there's not really any cultural barriers to holding an autopsy.
We should consider our priorities here.
First priority is to get away clean without leaving any clues it was actually Mathilde.
Second priority is to actually kill the Tsar without leaving a possibility of failure.
Third priority is to frame the vamps.
With those in mind, I definitely think that the nighttime visit is the best option. Additionally, the matrix idea is unnecessarily risky - what it some magic user notices and disarms it before it goes off? Unlikely but bad, and points strongly towards Mathilde.
Ultimately I think the right approach is something like:

Nightime visit with mockery of death into mundane knife to the heart, with as many subtle details as possible to frame the Lahmians. Scratches on the windowsill, illusions of bats, supernaturally beautiful woman, etc. I trust Mathilde to be clever on this.

We would do it in the middle of the night when nobody would be disturbing him and if someone does come to wake him up we can see them coming with Magesight and abort and try again the next night.

That's not a risk though. People don't check on the Tzar every hour, and if worst comes to worst and this happens to be the rare time they do, just stab the tzar, invisibility, smoke and mirror out. And we still leave evidence of magic stuff being done to the Tzar.

Hm. The colleges are not poor, and also not so large that paying out a sizeable sum of money (by peasant standards) per student would bankrupt them. Maybe whoever pays could be reimbursed by the colleges if the prospective mage turns out to be the real deal?
If the kid isn't the real deal, well, the Elector Count or the Emperor both have plenty of goon squads to punish any parent horrible enough to try and fraudulently sell their own child by claiming they're a wizard.
This makes sense. Remember, the new Tzar will be trying to control the narrative here, so we don't have to get subtle to make it look like a vampire killing. Nor will we be dealing with people highly versed in vampire lore by Mathilde's standards, because Mathilde's standards include "spent several years as spymistress to an Elector Count who was himself a vampire hunter, helped him fight a war against Vampireland until he died and left us all his notes, including the extra-spicy magical notes from the Liber Mortis, then years later we came searched the ruins of Castle Drakenhof so thoroughly we accidentally found Isabella von Carstein's strap-on, let alone any actual vampire lore still present in the place."
There are probably very, very few people with a pulse, or for that matter without it, who have as much vampire lore as Mathilde. The odds are that none of them are here, and if they were, they'd probably have been exiled from the capital by the current Tzar on suspicion of being a wizard. We're not playing to an audience who Know Shit on that level; we're playing to an audience that still tells spooky campfire stories.
