But we *have* to do trains. Y'all *voted* to make it a plan promise.
We can do trains a little later, but we do have to do them.

I don't believe I did. (Just checked the tally and I didn't.) At the time I had a number of family issues which led to decreased participation in probably all quests around that time.

What problems would come from saying "we thought when we made the plan that trains were a good idea, with the technology and knowledge we now have we are selecting to prioritize other things because they are not as good an idea as we believed they were. The world has changed and the ways we pursue our goals must also change," making public the "train cost estimates" and "what we will get instead of trains" and then just quietly burying everything train related?

This trains thing looks like an enormous boondoggle that might have a place in a different Communist Utopia but really doesn't belong here.

The last time I felt planning had gone so far awry as to require me making a plan was stopping Universal Building in favor of LSEEH. Head in the clouds vs the good we can do now.

Train feels like head in the clouds. Mag-lev in particular caught my ire because in OTL the first ordinary use Mag-Lev (not "is it possible", not tech-wank, not exhibitions made to score political points, but ordinary basic everyday Mag-Lev) was 1984's Birmingham (UK) Maglev which went 600 meters in total as a low-speed shuttle which had a number of favorable conditions I'm not sure we could leverage for ourselves.

I'm not sure what the "good we can do now" option is. What about light rail, trolleys and trams and the like?

there was no wei jugming action this turn what hapened ?
Cyber forgot to put them in. So Jungmin had a jolly good time spending extra time with his family and relaxing a bit.
The part where they are offered to join us in exchange for various help seems excellent to me, but the part about the revolutionary front leaves me with a very bad taste in my mouth, it sound scummy like the kind of thing that Americans and religious extremists do , fuck up a country to force a regime change more aligned with their opinion, if communism is superior then it should not need such treachery and our mc thinks it is,If this action is taken will there be a vote to decide on the methods used and the limits imposed or will we do everything including violence to bring them to our side?
Guangchou is a revolutionary communist nation that attained its new government by violent revolution and mass-murder of all that tried to stop you. You have already incited a continent-wide revolutionary struggle and actively intervened with military force against those acting against communist or socialist regimes and governments. Jungmin is an idealist, but that is a flaw of his character, alongside being vindictive. He will see no problems with helping the working class rise against their opressors, by any means neccessary, because he knows they (Guangchou/CyPac) can then help them avoid most, if not all, pitfalls of a post-revolutionary struggle.
This trains thing looks like an enormous boondoggle that might have a place in a different Communist Utopia but really doesn't belong here.

My guy. It is literally "Trains 101." Nobody is going to say MagLev! (at least on my watch) when you don't even have an ordinary rail network, period. Which is what this Mega-Project is about: building a rail network that currently doesn't exist.

Yeah. The idea that a national rail system is gonna be a boondoggle is laughable enough I'm not even gonna bother rebutting that.

Nobody's talking about building gadgetbahns here.

[X] Plan: The Worker's Plan for Revitalizing the Veins of the Glorious Democratic People's Republic of Guangchou Both Economic And Literal Through All-Encompassing Healthcare and Popular Production, And The Stabilization Of Communism In Our Allies

Preliminary plan:

[] Plan: Transit Maximalist

-[] Infrastructure
--[] Durable Goods Libraries (-2 Reputation) (+1 People's Opinion) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Durable goods libraries will help us get more bang for our buck with our consumer goods rollout.

-[] Light Industry
--[] Democratically Selected Consumer Goods Factory Complex (+2 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

The durable goods libraries increase availability, and combined with the bureau of Consumer Goods, we can build what the people want rather than making a top down decision without good information about that.

-[] Heavy Industry
--[] Construct Geothermal Power Plants (Helpful) (Bonus: +1 PttF + 2 Omake = 3)

Geothermal power plant because that bonus has been sitting there for ages, and we're about to do a lot of heavy industry work which is going to be power hungry. MSRs will fill that gap in time, but right now geothermal is what's available and won't ding our Fuel levels.

--[] The Dragon Rail (Mega-project - 1/64) (Harmful) (Sub Vote) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
--[] Rail Development Design Project (Mega-project - 3/3) (+1 Reputation) (Reduced Actions For The Dragon Rail) (Sub Vote) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
--[] Build Rolling Stock And Rail Factory Complex (Harmful) (+1 Reputation) (Reduced Actions For The Dragon Rail) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Why did I put Dragon Rail as a sub-vote? Because that's worth its own vote on what the system should be, and there's a design vote in there for the actual rolling stock development.

-[] Military
--[] Construct Military Building/Factory Complex (What) (Harmful) (-3 People's Opinion)
---[] Construct Steel Leopard Factory Complex (-4 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

It's overdue, and hopefully the new models will be ready in time to do some good on the Chinese front.

-[] Social
--[] Refugee Integration (-3 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Second verse, same as the first.

--[] Consumer Goods Bureau (???) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Now, some of this is pretty standard stuff: quality checks to make sure there's no rat poison in baby food, or carcinogens in your pillow stuffing, etc. (With enough teeth to make manufacturers comply)
But it's also there to directly liaise with the labor councils and determine what people actually want for their consumer goods. They help liaise and collate information to help consumers make decisions about what consumer goods factories get built.
And finally, they act as… consumer goods NACA. They do R&D on what features are good and bad, they test and reverse engineer western goods, they do studies on limited production runs to see what features people like and which ones are bad, and they advise manufacturers on how to improve their stuff.

--[] National Zoning Plan (???) (Sub Vote) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Land use is a huge thing for rail development, and while we're at it we may as well come up with a more general national zoning plan that will save us a headache later by planning for future growth on a longer term horizon.

I bumped a housing action to the next turn because I realized we really should figure out zoning post haste given all the rights of way needed for the Dragon Rail.

-[] Political
--[] China Refugee Outreach (???) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Hearts and minds! Provide food and shelter, and if the front lines have moved far enough start trying to get reconstruction going. Get labor councils going to help organize and administer services in the interim and support them materially as best we can.

Closer to active warzones, arrange to have one older family member take the kids with them to Guangchou where they can wait out the war in safety and continue their schooling so you don't get a missing generation.

If there's educated young adults who can work trades, see about sending some of them on temporary contract with the Ouvry where they can contribute to the Dragon Rail buildout while the war is happening and then return home with skills and experience they can apply to reconstruction.

Do a PR campaign that scapegoats the dead party orthodoxy and try to win good will by providing essential goods and services in these turbulent times, the general message being 'the Party fucked up, and your oversea communist siblings are stepping up to unfuck their shit and get you back on your feet'.

-[] CyPac
--[] Military Intervention - South Yemen (Optional: Volunteer Forces) (+2 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
---[] No Volunteer Forces
--[] Optional Military Intervention - Mozambique (Optional: Volunteer Forces) (+1 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
---[] No Volunteer Forces

Both SY and Mozambique have been on the to-do for a while, and while Mozambique is now optional, I want to help them wrap things up there before we touch Freedom's Cry because that's right in their neighbourhood.
No volunteer forces tho - the Chinese civil war is still taking up all of those.

Ok, variant on this plan that leaves trains for the next turn in exchange for language rationalization:

[X] Plan: No Train Today, Train Tomorrow

-[X] Infrastructure
--[X] Create New Housing (Helpful)
---[X] Use Large-Scale Energy Efficient Housing (Helpful) (+1 People's Opinion) (+1 Reputation)

More housing to help with refugee integration. This will be the first big batch of housing to have the new heath centred features implemented.

-[X] Light Industry
--[X] Democratically Selected Consumer Goods Factory Complex (+2 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Same as above.

-[X] Military
--[X] Construct Military Building/Factory Complex (What) (Harmful) (-3 People's Opinion)
---[X] Construct Steel Leopard Factory Complex (-4 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Same as above.

-[X] Social
--[X] Refugee Integration (+3 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Same as above.

--[X] Rationalize the Language (Mega-Project - 5/5 Actions) (+5 People's Opinion) (Bonus: +1 PttF + 2 Education = +3)

This it, the big one to help educate people faster. Expanding Adult Education should help, and both of those should help with Refugee Integration.

I'm assuming this takes the education bonus? Let me know if not, HC.

--[X] Expand Adult Education (-2 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF + 2 Education = +3)

This is to help with the language rationalization, as well as the reduction in working hours/jobs that we've got going on due to automation. Retraining adults by sending them back to school will help in both cases.

--[X] Consumer Goods Bureau (-3 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Same as above.

--[X] Support the Automation Debate (-1 Reputation, -1 Public Opinion) (Bonus: +1 PttF +2 Education = +3)

Right now our citizens are having a big debate about how to handle the reduction in labour hours that automation has brought on. We can support their efforts and encourage this sort of democratic decision making by supporting them with information on various potential ways to deal with it, setting aside resources to run experiments to see what works on a small scale, etc.

Not sure if this should get the education bonus?

-[X] Political
--[X] China Refugee Outreach (-2 Repuation, +1 People's Opinion) (Bonus: +1 PttF)

Provide food and shelter, and if the front lines have moved far enough start trying to get reconstruction going. Get labor councils going to help organize and administer services in the interim and support them materially as best we can. Try to garner some good will.

Same as Carcer's suggestion.

-[X] CyPac
--[X] Military Intervention - South Yemen (Optional: Volunteer Forces) (+2 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
---[X] No Volunteer Forces
--[X] Optional Military Intervention - Mozambique (Optional: Volunteer Forces) (+1 Reputation) (Bonus: +1 PttF)
---[X] No Volunteer Forces

Rationale same a above.

Edit: adding in the personal actions:

-[X] Wei Jungming - (RP)
--[X] Personal Action: Went with the family for a boat trip, Guangchou being an island there is a strong marine tradition, it's time to teach your children to fish, dive and sail
--[X] Personal Action: Tried out these newfangled arcades, incognito

--[X] Lover Action: Passed their airplane pilot and skydiving certificates together

I'll trade green for not having there be a nasty learning curve for the language.

It pains me to delay voting for trains, but the only thing I love more than choo choo is language. It is the best toy.

Wait, should refugee integration also take the education bonus? It sounds like a lot of the actions are education based.

CyberFemme i think you may have forget Wei Jungming action ?,or are they are voted separatly now ?

So why, fundamentally speaking, is the brayton cycle a bad match for an MSR? What makes gas cooling bad for them aside from, like, the fact that you aren't going to directly pump air over the salt?

I know the brayton cycle has been suggested by some as a more efficient final thermodynamic cycle for reactors in general, since the rankine cycle is thermodynamically inefficient by its nature, so what makes replicating that performance with an MSR nonviable?

Open Cycle brayton powerplants are a great option for cheap nuclear power because you avoid all the heat exchangers and condensers of Rankine or closed cycle Brayton.

But the R&D we did was on a closed cycle enriched nitrogen brayton cycle, because I didn't realize that was really best paired with a solid core high temp reactor where the enriched nitrogen would directly cool the reactor fuel elements.

To use it on our MSRs would mean pressurizing the reactor, which gives up one of the major benefits of MSRs: ambient pressure operation.
So instead we're going to insert an intermediate molten salt cooling loop to get the heat from the reactor to the brayton heat exchanger.

Then we're going to repurpose the R&D to make our submarine reactors - which are closed cycle by necessity.

The machinery we designed also turns out to have an operational point that makes it well suited to acting as an open bottoming cycle for gas turbines (MSR temperature is about 700-800C, which is similar to gas turbine exhaust), which is why we use that on our naval ships to make them more efficient.

1983 - H1 - The Cause Dies With You - 3

The Pentagon of the United States of America was, due to the currently ongoing Chinese Civil War and the threat posed by the Cybernetic Pact acting as a united military front in an aggressive international stage, not very relaxed in their day to day work or operations. Indeed, one could have said that stress and massive planning sessions for a multitude of suddenly viable scenarios could prove to be an enormous threat to American sovereignty and economic prosperity, not to speak about the dangers to the myriad countries whose independence is dependent on American weapons and American boots defending their democracy and freedoms from the depredations and atrocities of the communist world, were the norm of the day, as proven by the increase in pizza and fast food orders in the immediate area of the Pentagon.

And when 37 nuclear warheads had gone missing from the inventories and forces of the CCP, the internal McDonald's practically collapsed due to the amount of overtime and additional personnel being directed toward the problem. Not because the nuclear warheads that had gone missing from the CCP were no longer in their hands, mind you, but because they were not in the hands of the Chinese Republic as the various planners and alphabet-soup agencies had hoped to facilitate, so that they could force the CCP to accept a cease-fire or white peace to create a puppet state to provide a counter, or jump-off point, to the ascendant communist powers in Asia.

That stress ruined more than a few nights, with drinking and mental problems sharply rising through the roof as people scrambled to find out what happened to them. Yet, over the weeks, one by one, various nuclear warheads reported back, emerging from hidden boltholes, tunnels, depots, bureaucratic confusion, and the good old fog of war that had obscured their positions and movements while the assigned teams and defenders of these weapons had performed as they ought to in the case of the outbreak of hostilities.

Now, it could be said that the people would be pretty happy that most of the warheads had been found that the threat of nuclear war not in a controlled or limited manner located entirely within the Asian continent or China was diminished with every day.

It could also be said that the reports of nine of the trucks, squads, teams, and depots transporting, guarding, or storing these devices being destroyed, stolen, killed, missing, or obliterated would lead to an increase in the panic once more.

But what could not be said was that, for all their nervous watching and planning, the Pentagon was anything but idle and restricted to merely paper and reports.

After all, the Civil War was a messy occurrence that had already resulted in at least two million casualties in civilian and military personnel alike, dead and wounded counted as one, with the resulting...loss of specific machines of war.

Machines of war that a particular Small Asian Communist Nation had gone to great lengths to deny their enemies any insights into...and whose measures may not have held up as encompassing as they had hoped.
