Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Both from the The Wheel Turns chapter of ExWoD.
Page 29f for the Infernals, page 26 for the Abyssals.

There's a lot of evil fluff around them, but at a fundamental level Abyssal Exaltations look for a dying hero, while INfernal ones look for one who shares the pain of failure with them.
And to provide the quotes. Abyssals:
agents of Extinction
The Abyssal Exaltation hurtles itself across the
nightscape at the speed of a scream. It was drawn from a
font of light and divinity, once upon a time. A part of it
still yearns to find a hero and fill them with the power of
Heaven during their moment of crisis. It cannot. It lost
that ability long before the dawn of history. But oh, still it
yearns. And so it circles those who might be valid candi-
dates for Solar Exaltation, sending chills up their spines
for reasons they cannot hope to guess, and then – usually
– it passes on in impotent frustration, and seeks another.
The only valid candidates for Abyssal Exaltation are
those in the midst of the most fundamental and human
of all actions: the act of dying. The dying individual
must also meet the same standards of excellence and
supernatural awareness as a candidate for Solar Exalta-
tion, although the Abyssal Exaltation is no more partic-
ular about supernatural taint than is a Lunar Exaltation.

Sunlight burns the Abyssal Exaltation, and so
during the day it hides within corpses. Normally,
this means it cannot grant its blessing while the sun
stands in the sky. Normally, this means Abyssals are
only drawn from the ranks of those dying in the dark,
but sometimes… sometimes… well. Sometimes the Ex-
altation locates the perfect candidate, and finds they
need help in dying. When that happens the Exaltation
enters a corpse, forces it to lurch upright, to shuffle,
to stalk, and to kill. For these Exalts-to-be, their final
living sight is a moldering cadaver moving to embrace
them with the tender joy of a long-lost friend as their
life gushes out of a corpse-bitten throat.

And Infernals
Infernal Exaltation only visits itself upon people
who meet three criteria.
First, the individual must be in some way excep-
tional. Many Infernals were world-class experts in their
field, even before Exaltation, but skill and prowess are
not the only measures by which the Chosen of Ruin
may gain profane notice. Extraordinary courage, con-
viction, or willpower are also all common features
which are likely to draw the Exaltation to an individual.

Second, they must have encountered the supernatu-
ral world at some point in their lives and recognized it as
such. The Infernal Exaltation has no time to waste with
the uninitiated; the apocalypse looms, and the sooner
the newly-empowered Demon Prince pulls down the pil-
lars of Heaven, the sooner she can ascend its rubble to
take her rightful place as Demon Emperor or Empress.
And so the Infernal Exalted are drawn exclusively from
the ranks of those who have beheld witches dancing at
their black Sabbaths and making offerings of blood to
the gods of old; who have seen the monstrous beings in
the deepest offices and laboratories of Pentex facilities;
who have laid themselves prostrate before a vampire and
begged to feel again the ecstasy of his fangs.
Finally, the individual must feel in her heart of
hearts that she has failed to grasp her dreams, or has
attained and squandered them, and that her life is a fail-
ure. Despair is the beacon that guides the Infernal Exal-
tations, and they can only infuse their stolen and twist-
ed power into the hearts of the weak and the wounded.
And their ExvsWoD motivations:
dreams of Eschaton
The Infernal Exalted are left with a soul ablaze
with demonic power, but no explanation, no primer,
no rundown of how things got to this point: no context
for what they are.
But they do know where things are going.
Every Infernal has an instinctive understanding of
the idea of the Wheel of Ages, and in quiet moments
when she clears her thoughts, she can feel it turning to-
ward its nadir. The Sixth Age looms, the heavens tremble,
the earth quails, and soon God's throne will stand vacant,
waiting for some great and terrible power to claim it.
The Yama Kings, rulers of the Thousand Hells,
wheel, circle, scheme, betray, and jockey for advantage
in the contest for rulership of the Age of Sorrow to
come. Each dreams of the empty throne of Heaven,
and wishes to ascend to become Demon Emperor. The
Infernals, too, sense that this is their ultimate destiny:
to rise up above a world of ruin, wearing a crown of
hellish splendors. Perhaps this suits their thwarted am-
bitions, or perhaps an Infernal believes that by guiding
the course of Armageddon she can spare the world the
worst of its potential horrors. Regardless, each feels the
future rushing toward them like a great dark beast, and
knows that they must ride it or perish.
Even one other is too many, if that person is an asshole. We could probably bring down every major government in the world in just a few months if we really wanted to, simply by asking the right questions and spreading the answers around to the right people.
Opposition also gets a voice is what I am saying. Always it does. And while it's fair that others don't share my ultimate trust in collective humanity (I could go on for a long time about this, but I'm not sure this is the time and place, and it's at least in equal measure a desperate belief of a quasi-religious manner as it is a rational argument based on history, observation and knowledge), one must remember - opposition always gets a say. And here the opposition to the rise of humanity is legion. ALl the supernatural factions benefiting from humanity-as-cattle, all those trying to destroy humanity, all those afraid of humanity would oppose the increased power of it. And, reversely, all those who protect humanity, all those standing on the side of good will work to stop the Abyssals who embrace the dreams of Oblivion and Infernals who work to bring down nations and the world.

It's telling that the canon Abyssal is the protector of the dead archetype. If given proper tools and support, sidereals alone would be able to mitigate a lot of, if not all excesses of the "evil types" of exaltations. Would there be damage? Almost certainly. Is it entitled to think that only Molly alone among all others on Earth deserves to have this power? Hell yes, that's Hubris with capital H. Are there ways to mitigate the issues? Also yes. In regards to infernals - find other shards one by one, and distribute them ourselves. That's a completely doable plan, if not an easy one. We know that a single infernal shard before it is placed into the host can be moved and even used long-term. We have a whole suit of abilities to check the candidates. And candidate selection can be influenced - the idea that Wan Kuei's plan was impossible didn't occur to us.

And also remember - opposition also gets a choice. Odin is already looking for other shards, and has at least some leads. The Wheel of Ages is already turning, and it is not in our power to stop it. Only to change the direction.

It should be noted that just like Infernals do not have to be destructive, Sidereals do not have to be constructive, same for solars and lunars. Exalted are mortals given the powers of gods, no more and no less, they are extraordinary in their willpower, their ambitions, the scope of their dreams and desires. We are talking Classical Greek Heroes here, not anything more modern as a baseline. Morality is within the range you would expect of them.

True, but for solars and sidereals there's bias directly applied by exaltation. Especially for Sidereals:
Chosen of Journeys
In the Age of Legends, the Chosen of Journeys
concerned themselves with travelers, roads, ships, and
those who went to and fro across the primal Earth. In
the World of Darkness, it falls to them to ensure that
their fellow Chosen go where they are most urgently
needed, and choose those paths that will arm them
with the power and knowledge they will need when
they arrive at their destinations.

Chosen of Serenity
In the Age of Legends, the Chosen of Serenity of-
ficiated over weddings and other unions that assured
peace and prosperity throughout the land. In the World
of Darkness they must bring joy, love, rest, and relief
into those lives that most desperately need them, lest
those fighting to preserve the future succumb to despair.

Chosen of Battles
In the Age of Legends, the Chosen of Battles over-
saw the course of wars and the struggle of nations,
using their powerful magic and military acumen to
ensure that conflicts resolved themselves according
to fate's decrees. In the World of Darkness they must
become strategists and tacticians, guiding their fellow
Chosen away from those battles that cannot be won,
and toward those that must be won.

Chosen of Secrets
In the Age of Legends, the Chosen of Secrets were
the keepers of dangerous and forbidden lore, and en-
sured that secrets only came to light in those moments
when it fate demanded it. In the World of Darkness
they collect the secrets of their enemies, arm their allies
with knowledge, and safeguard the peaceful ignorance
of the mundane world, lest ordinary men and women
be drawn into the bloody wars of heroes and monsters.

Chosen of Endings
In the Age of Legends, the Chosen of Endings
stood officiant over all things whose time had passed:
lives, nations, and even the Age of Legends itself. In
the World of Darkness it will fall to them to find those
ordained conclusions which can forestall the greatest
and bleakest ending of them all: the end of the world.
And in the Middle Ages it's even more explicit:
Alone among the Celestial Exalted, the Sidereals
know precisely what they are: ministerial agents of fate,
selected to guide the course of the world from what is
to what must be. In short, they're here to save the Earth,
though it won't be by the direct might of their arms or
the weight of their magic. Oh, they'll use both of those
things, of that there can be no doubt, but the world is
a much bigger thing than anyone without their scope of
vision can imagine, and countless moving parts – which
is to say, lives, events, human souls, and inhuman beings
– need to be moved into place if the world is to keep on
spinning toward whatever destiny has in store for it.

True, but for solars and sidereals there's bias directly applied by exaltation. Especially for Sidereals:

And in the Middle Ages it's even more explicit:

True, but that does not mean Molly would agree with all the ways in which some Sidereals would want to preserve the world. Some for instance might take offense at all this free will stuff that messes with their powers.

...It doesn't really have to be this way here, because this quest is pretty fundamentally not Exalted Versus World of Darkness, but Exalted not-quite-versus Dresden Files - but, still, I think this is of some relevance.

ExWoD Sidereals are encouraged by their powerset to be pretty supportive of Free Will and the whole spectrum of things traditionally considered "Good." As seen with their role in the technocracy conflict, the bits of texts that go more indepth with the whole "Fate works in the mysterious ways" concept of Sidereals as agents of benign higher powers.

ExWoD, in general, is much less concerned "Classic Greek Hero fuck up everything/Great Man Theory is Horrifying" stuff than 2.5e. Holden built it as "Exalts try to cancel the apocalypse" as its primary narrative, with "Exalts fuck up a whole lot of things by being dumb or evil" being a notable secondary theme, but certainly far from being as dominant as it was in 2.5e.

Note I said it was possible for a Sidereal to be upset at free will not that most of them would be in 2.5 style.

Basically how you think the world would make out from mass exaltation depends on your general opinion of humanity, there is no Great Curse in play, no Torment, the closest thing is the Abyssals not being able to use their old names without consequences. What the Exalted do with their powers is in their hands.

I think intent matters. In ExvsWoD the scions of ancient bloodlines ground down into near dust by the passage of ages were faced with a terrible realization - the world was ending, and they, who once were entrusted with protecting it, could do nothing to stop it. And so, they gambled. They broke open an ancient vault full of wonders and nightmares, set into motion that which they knew could not be stopped once unleashed. Not for fame, not for glory, not for their own survival even, for I am fairly sure everyone involved was destroyed then and there, but so their children and their children's children could live. And while we cannot be certain that their gamble paid out, their intent most likely mattered and was heard.

If the vault is opened by Njcodemius Archleone, if He Who Walks Beside unearthes Abyssals from their Graves, that would most likely result in a statistically worse people exalting. At least that's my opinion. Thematically it is appropriate I feel, for the intent and methods (self-sacrifice, ancient arcane rituals, mass sacrifice of unwilling victims, peerless exalted excellence, etc) of those breaking the vault to matter in who gets the first picks of the shards.

Indeed. For better or worse exalted are human. I choose to be optimistic about humans.

Essentially the difference I sin greeting, attire and not using Empathy excellency immediately for the greeting.

Given the context and limits of the Abyssal Shards I still think it's ridiculous to expect a significant majority to act like stable people.

The mention of the opposition is salient here in the other direction as well. People have already been searching for ages and haven't made it yet, but once they're free everyone is going to be grabbing for them. You seem to wholly discount the consequences of that in favor of imagining a golden future you'd like to have and shrugging about all the stuff between that world and this one.

Hubris is the wrong way to look at it, and kind of a hilarious thing to accuse any exalt of anyway since they're basically hubris' mascots.

It's not about her being the only worthy one, it's about the fact that she's a known good factor and we have no means to ensure future draws are the same. With the consequences of even a small number of bad draws making this about personal worth is itself the arrogant take.

Molly's right to the power isn't the point; the context and consequences around all new draws are. Making it about her is distracting from the real issue.

300 new god-kings aren't going to universally decided to uplift humanity, and even the ones who agree are unlikely to agree on what that means. I'd be very surprised if we didn't get opposing racial supremacist exalts directly fighting each other to name one example, because even the uncorrupted exaltations care that you're great at something, not if you're good.

To my eye your plan is one that either works perfectly or explodes.

Three hundred exalts don't have to agree on what Eternal Deliberative should look like (and who, if any, should be genocided in the process) to agree that certain forces should be kicked down a notch first, and that certain psychos should be dealt as they arise. People don't have to agree perfectly to work together on certain topics, like in real life.

I am not sure about what you mean about the opposition point working in both directions. Yes, others will try to grab for the exaltations (no one was looking for them, by the way, they were pretty thoroughly buried and forgotten). Others are already looking - we know of at least two: Odin and Emma-O. And while I can probably agree with Odin getting his hands on a shard or two, he has a good record of empowering mortals to divinity, we should do what we can to prevent Emma-O from getting any proper first age style Akuma.

And herein lies a compromise path. We know that there are infernal exaltation out there (or can guess, at least, chances that ours was the only one are slim). We know that they can be unearthed one by one, and held in captivity by various forces without direct intevention of their masters (i.e. Emma-O and Mab didn't need to be constantly present to keep a shard at bay). We know (and with the Crown can know more) of how hosts are selected. So, dig them up, without releasing them. Hide them away in the world of our soul. Release them one by one when we find good candidates.

And if abyssals are *spoilers*, chances are that we'll get to meet them at some point, probably as adversaries in many cases. So, get those too. Redeem as many as we can.

If, at the time of Black Vault being opened, it is done by a united host of 50+ E5 Infernals (with possibly at least one Elder) and Abyssals, with a backing of the heavenly host, a cadre of prepared candidates, and a world-wide surveillance network ready to catch any new exalts... I think chances go up for the whole thing to be a net benefit for humanity.

And it's not like we can ignore exaltations out there perpetually. others are looking already, at least some have a chance of succeeding in finding them.

Iron, Silver, Flame and Circle
Iron, Silver, Flame and Circle

By Bob the Skull
[As recorded and then transcribed
by designated scribe Clippy]

It has often been a weight upon the mind of mankind how to defend themselves from spirits and specters, god-kin and devils all, from the crackling campfire to the Proton Pack in Ghostbusters the toolmaker has conceived of tools against the intangible and the immortal and in a sense it is this very conception that gives power and weight to the tools. Why are the fey vulnerable to cold iron? Because in an age far off when first a mortal warrior crossed blades with one of the Tuatha de Danann cold iron came only from the heavens. What could be more mystical, more potent than that which descended on road to starfire to the earth. Why does sliver serve as bane to the most fearsome of shape-shifters, to the accursed dead? Because it is the metal of the moon whose constant cycles across the heavens marked the passage of time, silver then would place those immortals under the hand of time as mortals felt it. This is a far as many sorcerers go who delve in such matters, content that the tools humankind uses in its defense are of its making, though the blind deaf masses do not understand their greatness.

They are wrong.

There exist in the world principles of boundary and geometry which are not dependent upon what mortal men expect them to be, aspects of reality deep-carved, which might be enhanced by the perception of thinking beings, but are not dependent upon them. One of these all magicians of sense know well, though only in the particular, the Seven Laws of Magic. The corruption which breaking them brings is only a aspect of a wider pattern: the use of mortal magic reinforces itself, a wizard who uses magic to clean his home will tend to rely more and more upon spells for the task, just as one who sings his garden into flower would count it dull indeed to return to the work of spade and shovel. Then there are the fundamental aspects of elemental magic: Fire purifies, water wears away, air communicates, earth preserves and life adapts.

[Her Glorious Majesty interjecting: Like Jurassic Park? Jurassic Park held insight into one of the basic insights of magic?

There follows a brief digression as to the nature of the mass media in question of which the entity 'Bob' did not know. This was followed by the philosophical question of whether or not it is worthwhile consuming media which does not include images or other stimuli designed to engage the human libido. Let it be here known that the nature and value of the content 'Baywatch' is in no way cogent to the subject of the lecture]

Then there's circles, circles are one of the most powerful things in the world, but when you come down to it a circle is only the most geometrically even way to invoke a boundary, a way to signal to yourself and to the magic of the universe that you are raising a new boundary. There is no reason why you could not make a magic 'circle' shaped like a square, a pyramid with a hexagon base, a dodecahedron. Indeed people do that all the time, we call those houses, well homes technically there's this whole thing with homes and hearths which we can leave off for another time, but the point is that when you are invoking a boundary you are invoking all boundaries, the very idea of separation of form which is what separates our ordered universe from the Outside in the both literal and metaphorical sense. The Outer Gates are one big protective circle, or at least that was the belief of some of my more philosophically inclined masters. None of them actually went and looked. Anyway it's weird that you can just ignore them. Did I mention it was weird?

I know the question you are going to ask, no Outsiders can't ignore circles and thresholds either at least not any of the ones I know. Some of the higher forms, the more evolved for lack of a better term can break through all but the most potent and carefully crafted circles and the most ancient of thresholds, but that is not the same thing as ignoring them. I don't have enough inputs to even begin to guess why that is, but it is probably the same thing that ensures you don't put yourself, your power into promises. If you figure something out give me a head's up you hear?

[It is at this point that her Divine Majesty murmured in a tone too low to be heard by the Bob Entity, but not too low for my microphone: "I don't know which is worse, the puns or the flirting." Suggestions that she discipline the Bob Entity until it would no longer engage in either behavior were met with a negative response. Supposition: Response analogous to the class of actions deemed 'socially unacceptable'.
