The Heir for the Day 1:
You took a deep breath as you watched the many Lord of the Small Council talk and bicker among themselves, waiting for the King to finally arrive. But the only one who wasn't feeling the jovial atmosphere was Robert, who with his Ruby Cloak was still dreadfully uncomfortable among the great high lords of the Small Council. "You sure you have to give up your post?"
You rolled your eyes. "If I didn't, I think Rhaenrya would claim I have a death wish or did not desire her?" You replied as you rubbed your face before you saw lord Beesbury quietly trying to hide scrolls. "Lord Beesbury, please do not tell me you are hiding the scrolls I requested. I need to go over your bookkeeping again, no copper will be unturned, and unspent."
Beesbury was completely unsurprised and completely exasperated. "Last I recalled, you no longer were assisting Lord Strong with the Bookkeeping, nor myself with keeping the King's Peace."
You rolled your eyes, anything to get you away from them. "Where is Lord Corlys?' He said he had some maps, and I wanted to look at them."
"I am here, my prince." He said with a cheeky smile, as he quickly moved through the room and took his seat, his orb being placed in front of his chair by Ser Ryman. "And unfortunately, the charts are not the best that my men could offer. Your father has been hard at work, but running blockades is difficult, even for a man of his skills." He said as he showed you the map.
The Stepstones were all still the same, but the more accurate charts of the winds were… well, it was brilliantly simple in its designs, but the charts themselves were decades old, and they also did not reveal the great trouble the triarchy went to fortify them.
"How many castles are on each island?" You asked.
"Only one, but they are hastily spending men, material, and lives into building citadels that will be able to withstand dragon attack," Corlys stated, his mind wandering. "But we have a stroke of luck." He unfurled another scroll, and you read it.
Immediately your face turned into a smile. "They are reliant on food shipments from the rest of the world? Cut them off?"
"And it will just be as simple as waiting for them out. One island at a time. Carrion crows have feasted with less." Corlys said before the door opened and the King appeared. Viersys seemed more… withdrawn than normal. He was unhappy, seemingly in tears, before he came into the room.
Beside him, was Otto Hightower, who gave a nod of approval, before the parchments were rolled back up.
"Your Grace." Everyone bowed, even you, as you remained standing, as the King's orb was placed down and the meeting could now begin.
"Why is Lucien here, are you assisting us today?" He asked. "Serving as Cupbearer for my daughter while she galivants off on her dragon?"
"No, your grace?" You replied. "I was just going to assist in giving a report on the Stepstones-"
Viserys nodded gravely at that news. "Yes yes, I've heard. Lord Corlys has been very thorough in bringing up those… rumors. Castles rising all over the stepstones, the Crab feeder blocking Essosi trade from Volantis, A new High Magistrate of the Triarchy waging a great campaign to beggar our ports, and the capture of Westeros sailors, we have already discussed it. I have sent Envoys to form a coalition to help with this matter. More information is not required."
Lord Corlys seemed incensed. But he remained quiet. "We have other matters that are far more pressing to discuss than Lord Corlys. And I have already taken your measures into account." Viserys replied. "Let me try my way before we go to yours."
An hour passed, and the meeting went from King's Landing's new commander, the taxes that flow into the coffers, and numerous projects and ships being built…
Before it leads to the King deciding to make some jokes. "So I told him, he may have seen the ass from the other end?"
That earned the laugh from most of the councilors, even you got a chuckle from the joke before Lord Beesbury spoke. "Your Grace, at Pince Lucien's request as his final act of being Lord Commander, he has spent a brilliant and impressive amount of coin, of the crown's coffers, and it is a great expense."
Robert swore under his breath. "Fuck you, Lucien." Before he stood. "I already gave my report to Lord Beesbury, and you will find all items cross-referenced and sourced. The men are up to Prince Lucien's and my incredible standard, and it was well worth the Gold that was spent on this investment." He then bowed to Viserys. "May I beg my leave, I have work to do?"
Viserys gave a nod, and you quickly took the seat, kicking up your feet as the door opened again, and Rhaenyra came running in, passing Robert as she bowed her head. That earned a smile from you and the King. "Rhaenyra you're late." the King joked. "My cupbearer can't be late, leaves us all wanting for cups."
He may have teased her, but many of the lords were happy that the Princess had arrived. She planted a peck on her father's cheek and a kiss on her own, as she began her duties. "Sorry father, I was with my mother." She said,
Liar? You and Viserys took a whiff. "Was Syrax with you, or did the Maesters allow her to ride with you?" Then Viserys was prepared to make another joke when Lord Hightower changed the subject. "Your Grace, perhaps we can discuss the other matter… the Tournament for the Heir?"
Even now Viserys seemed ill as he took a sigh, before he smiled, clearly lost in his own thoughts. "Yes?" He said. Every time he heard those words, he almost wished to cancel the whole thing.
"Are the signs accurate?" He asked Maester… You still couldn't remember his name, Melios? The old man gave a nod.
"They are as accurate as we can estimate." He replied.
Viserys then nodded. "And the care for my wife, do you believe there will be any complications?"
"Lady Visanya has said that any risk is uncertain, but she believes quite highly that your wife's labor will be an easy one." He replied, though this time with a great deal of stress in his tone. You noticed, but you don't think the King did…
However, he then smiled. "Well I believe we are done for today, all the business has been concluded, Lord Strong?" He asked.
"A few minor details are just actions that can be dealt with by your lord's hand, is it so pleases you?" The Lord Strong replied with a nod.
"I will see to those details myself, the King should not trouble himself with such trivial matters." Lord Otto stated.
"Then we adjourned." He replied as he then stood, and the orbs were taken away as everyone left to do their duties.
