Wait, we are not actually planning on handing over the Ulgu Orb right? It's seven Orbs the Colleges are getting.
What, exactly, is Mathilde going to do with the mightiest kind of power stone known to human wizardry? An object whose sole use, as far as we know, has been to supply the juice for battlefield-reshaping weapons of destruction that transcend even regular levels of Battle Magic? The Luminark and the Celestial Hurricanum are basically tactical nukes, except they're reusable. We neither have the ability to enchant Battle Magic nor do we know any Battle Magic suitable for such an engine of war. What, are we gonna keep it on our mantle? That seems a bit much for a conversation piece, and it would distract from the pillar in our living room radiating the energies of Dwarf Hell.

I fully expect that one day, Mathilde will have a plan where "use an Orb of Sorcery as part of the construction" makes sense. At that point, when we are actively ready to use it, we can pay out another eight gallons and make a new set, and deliver a mere seven Orbs to the Colleges with our apologies. But I think it's very likely that we won't be ready for that by the time we're ready to make the first set, because of how much else we've got on our plate. Title drop.
So, I remember from art class that people are usually about seven heads high? So since Warhammer, a foot thick staff made of stone one head taller than a person wouldn't even be out of aesthetic.
While aesthetic as hell, I will point out that Boney has previously stated that powerstones and staves don't mix, and Orbs of Sorcery are powerstones on steroids.
No, power stones aren't useful in staffs.
…How many actions did it take to get here?
We captured it on turn 7 completely accidentally, call that action zero. Turn 8, we investigated the box, 1 action. Then on turn 21, seven years later, we finally investigated the liquid pouring out of it: our second action. At this point appeared the "boop with a powerstone" action in our action list. Turns 25, 26, and 27 we investigated various physical properties of AV, three more actions. Turn 28 we showed it to Thorek for use in Anvils of Doom, another action. Turn 36 we investigated the Divine AV possibility, which was locked until we took the Investigate Ranald's Coin action on Turn 29 -- since investigating Ranald's Coin was the direct prerequisite for an AV action and had no other effects but was not itself an AV action, I will count these two actions as 1.5 actions. And now, on turn 38, we're here, for a total of 8.5 actions invested in AV -- with the caveat that we could, theoretically, have reached this point on our third AV action, though it would probably have been a lot riskier (i.e. involved rolls where things could go horribly wrong) by skipping the several actions devoted to figuring out how to safely handle it. Let's say that five actions was probably the fastest we could have reasonably arrived at this point: investigate the box, investigate the juice, check what causes it to state-change, check its interaction with living things, boop with powerstone.

Hold on I just realized something!

Didn't we get our apparition binding notes which we have not used yet not too long ago? If we don't explain that this whole thing happened on accident as a journeyman we could totally pass this off as a result of our 'independent research' into apparitions! We could troll the Gold's so hard over this!

I think using AV for enchanting will be similar to what Arabian mages do. Using a apparition to power a magic item. Allowing Mathilde to make enchantments for other winds.

I'd actually like to make a second set quite soon after the first set. It would be extremely interesting to be able to have a full set at WEB-MAT for research purposes.

That does run into the wall of us having no clue how to replicate the thing.

(Also I think its even funnier that we've just had this thing sitting around for over almost two decades.)

I think we should put off making a full set till we find out when the dawi are going to try to retake the Karak. Being able to fully charge their most powerful weapon would be a boon.

I think we could maybe retrofit the Eye of Gazul to only need an Orb rather than the power stones it currently does, but yeah, if we take a moment to breathe, it's not really the hugest deal right this instant. Even if we didn't have any obligations whatsoever there's just not enough actions to unravel all of AV in a single turn.

Like literally, between needing to write a bunch of papers to get enough favors for power stones, and the current actions we have for AV (trying it out with enchantment, subjecting it to power stone creation methods, weaponizing it, and per Boney's word, making the machine and then testing it out), we couldn't do it in a single turn, even with overwork.

...the voting's gonna be silly for next turn.

If The We can't keep up with their duties, they can get help. Boney's response to questions about them being able to get help was to imply that "more spiders" would usually be much better at the job.

[X] The We

That said - The We are as much part of K8P as anyone else, and we are at the end of the day drawing lines between who will and won't staff the place regardless.

They are a just as much of a person as anyone else, as well. If anyone would choose not to visit solely because the wrong kind of person is staffing it, I don't really care? Let them be disadvantaged to their peers, then.

I think Cython would be interesting, but compromising our leadership of the Library is a very big ask - and it being someone whose main priority in hiring is killing book thieves is...

I don't want "look for people to kill" to be the MO of our staff. This is not a place that should exist in the edge of violence.

We have supplied the Karaz Ankor with enough AV to last them around two decades more.
Assume two gallons for a major battle's worth of Runes.
@BoneyM around how often do Dwarves have major battles where they'd deploy anvils of Doom? I'd have guessed around once a decade on average but that's just a gut feeling.
Usually about once every twenty years for each of the Old Holds, so once every four or so overall.
They want our AV at a rate of about two gallons every four years. We've given them twelve gallons (a twenty-four-year supply) in the last five years. They're set, and we have 18 gallons at the moment. We could make two full sets of Orbs of Sorcery and still have enough AV to charge an Anvil of Doom, in case the Dwarves, a notoriously reckless lot bad at conserving resources, blew through the 24-year-supply four times faster than expected. We should not be worried about the Cult of Thungni being bereft of AV.

Honestly, pretty much every step of the process would be hilarious from an outsider's point of view.

Mathilde gets Powerstone creation lessons: Huh, maybe she needs them for the Waystone project.

Mathilde buys a Powerstone for every other Wind(35 CF! Twice the biggest standard Battlemagic enchantments out there): Okay, that's a lot of power and in variety. What?

Mathilde drops a full set of Orbs of Sorcery on the Colleges: What the actual fuck!?

Does it again: …

Admittedly, that's a rate of usage that depends on how often major groups of Greenskins or Skaven are attacking them.

A major retaking is almost certainly going to see a higher-than-that rate of usage.

(Though I doubt that they'll run out that quickly)

I firmly believe the dawi will go through it trying to retake a hold . The more Av they have the less lives they have to loose retaking a hold.

@Boney have the dawi had to use the Av yet?

Finally caught up!

Skipping over the library vote, I have this to say about the AV: if we want to flex even harder, I think it would be a great idea to have the book on it ready, so that when we drop the Orbs of Sorcery and the Colleges ask how it was accomplished, we can go "Read my book and find out."

For a stretch goal, quite an impossible one really considering the AP expenditute involved, instead of giving the Greys just an Orb of Sorcery, maybe we could put it on a Battle Altar of Nazgul and then gift that to the College.

I remember asking around then and Boney answered that even if we gave them lakes of AV they would still be able to find good uses for it.

Also how come we haven't had single pun complaining about Cython's draconian lending policies?

Heh, I was just imagining a future where Mathilde to her coworker Cython is like:

"Cython I won't be around the library for a bit as I'm going to Nagarythe to fight the Dark Elves"
"Really? It's been too long since the waterfolk have felt my ire, I think I shall accompany you, I've been wanting more diverse sources for the Cytharai anyway."

And then they go loot a dark elf library.

Realistically wouldn't happen due to the hostility between dragon types, but amused me quite a bit anyway.

Really, with how useful AV is I suspect a magister will eventually look into ways to reliably capture more snakes. Probably cannot capture them between life and death like we did, but killing them and harvesting their corpse for sweet, sweet AV loot looks mighty tempting the more useful AV is proven to be. Also, showing one to the High Elves should be funny as hell.

Elves: How the fuck did they make this? *They are told* What. Fucking humans. That is completely insane.

Well, this gets into the apparition debate, but that is absolutely edging pretty damn close to demonsmithing.

You know what, forget the crazy adventures about mugging gods, stealing mountains, or murdering colleges. At this rate Mathilde's going to be better known for her magical superweapons collection. Like Orbs of Sorcery, Waystones, and of course the giant fuck-off doom mountain of death.
