I mean OK, we might be targeted, but targeted the same way? Did the random forest spirits spend weeks studying Mathilde, her powers and her character? Is she alone as he was at the end? I do not doubt that fey are scary in the woods, but we are still hands down the best scout the army has and unless we want the whole army to risk running into that devastating first strike it would be prudent of us to give that aid we can

How are we the best scout the army have? We don't even have the basic scouting skill and we never scouted a forest before. If anything, we would be one of the worst scouts. Our only advantages are windsight and resilience... not that useful when the enemy is almost certain to notice us first.

Scouts are basicly used as canaries in the current plan. When they start dying we know the enemy is there. I'd be surprised if the Tzar expected his scouts to actually outscout wood elves. Scouting puts us at harms way for very little benefit.

I'd understand wanting to stay with the forest rotas since we could help them hold on until the main forces arrive (especially if we concentrate all our magical forces), scouting just seems the worst of the options. We'll just be a lackluster scout amongst hundreds of others (albeit with windsight and better resilience).

Counterspell:
...
Battle wizards of skill and cunning often weave countermeasures into their spells accordingly, creating protective overlays of energy or running magical energies through the half-completed weave to ground on anyone trying to attack it.
@Boney Are there classes on this topic, would Mathilde need to inquire individually or are battle wizards expected to develop this skill on their own?

Sure, I'll hop on the bandwagon.

Since we can go with plans here are the few I'll go with :

[x] Plan full on reserves
-[x] [GREY] Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars
-[x] [GOLD] Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars
-[x] [ICE] Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars

The safest plan, we wait for the inevitable opportunity to bring our offensive power to bear one the enemy has engaged Kislev's forces and strike with overwhelming might.

[x] Plan investigation and reserves
-[x] [GREY] Investigate Boyar Kalashinivik
-[x] [GOLD] Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars
-[x] [ICE] Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars

Similar to previous plan but we wait until we investigated the boyar to join the strike team.

[x] Plan fortify the frontline
-[x] [GREY] Guarding the forest rotas as they expand and fortify the path
-[x] [GOLD] Guarding the forest rotas as they expand and fortify the path
-[x] [ICE] Guarding the forest rotas as they expand and fortify the path

Having all our magical forces where the fight is most likely to occur first (since the wood elves have to stop us from fortifying). Even if we or our allies end up as casualities, we'll be amongst allies so it will be very hard for the enemy to stop us from ressurecting so the risk might not be huge. We'll also be able to fight as soon as the enemy attacks.

Mathilde has barely dipped a toe into battle magic, going into the advanced stuff from where she is now would be a tad premature.
Is this a technique primarily or exclusively used with battle magic? Is it like with Smoke & Mirrors, where lesser magics just don't have "room" for the necessary additions, or is some other factor in play?

(caveat b/c I've seen how these discussions sometimes go: this is purely a matter of personal curiosity; feel free not to answer if it'd be too much trouble or otherwise bothersome)

You can vote in plans, but this isn't a plan vote so they'd be counted as one vote each for the included options.

Smaller spells are cast too quickly to give much opportunity for shenanigans and don't have enough energy tied up in them for them for shenanigans to be worth the effort.

We might not have a rank in the scouting skill, but we're scarcely useless. Not being trained for reconnaissance is suboptimal, but do you know what we are overqualified in relative to the woodsmen? Infiltration. We used that to great effect during the reclamation of K8P, both the battle of the caldera and the various engagements before it. We scouted the greenskins. We scouted Mors. We scouted Eshin and successfully snuck into their territory to steal their stuff.

God, I miss Eshin-friend. But my point is, even without the dedicated skill of the specialist, Mathilde is equal to this task. She'll be fine. We've done the recon song and dance so many times I'd have to think carefully to count them all. And since checking up on the Boyar isn't getting traction:

I kind of agree in principle, but a wood elf infested forest during the day is kind of a bad fit still. We have great infiltration skills, but will they even apply? We have to find the enemy forces first in order to inflitrate them, and I would bet on the Athen Lauren forces finding us first before we find anything to "infiltrate"...

@Boney Would something like this work? I'm not sure how the Cavalary is parceled out since apart from the Kreml Guard and the city pulks(maybe?), they're all Cav:

[X] [GREY] Attach herself to a large unit of Cavalary meant as rapid reinforcements to enable them to ride in the forest with Rite of Way, as forests are murder on Horses and letting them ignore hidden roots and broken ground would give them great mobility and speed in responding to the first horn sounded.

Otherwise this.

If we want to respond quickly to threats wherever they pop up that is what the patrolling city rotas are for.
The other rotas will patrol the expanded path and stand ready to respond to any contact with the enemy along it.
If we wanted a larger group of cavalry to be waiting with us than is available in the patrol patterns of the city rotas then we should have joined the Tzar's war council so we could influence the distribution of the conventional forces.

Pretty much everyone is cavalry. The Kreml Guard are half of the professional infantry in the entirety of Kislev, with the other half being the Erengrad Streltsi. But yes, Mathilde would be able to attach herself to one of the patrols and help them get where needed at maximum speed.

I feel much better about scouting the Forrest with others around.

Just a silly idea I suddenly came up with: since there is a Metal spell that makes materials as strong as still, literally, to the point of debuffing them if they are already stronger than steel, would it be possible for a Wild-Metal collaboration to device a spell that makes materials as strong as We-silk? @Boney?
