I am not going to be overly troubled over the Johann vote, mostly because I do not value the life of the Tzar that much, that said there is something to be said about keeping at least one wizard fresh and in reserve for when the rest of them are going to be tired and locked down so if assassination watch does not do it for you consider the value of a strategic reserve in war

RoW's speedup comes from improving the quality of the terrain. Given that the army's plan is to move along and build a road, I'm not sure that still applies.
The clear-cut area is still going to have a lot of stumps and such, they aren't building an actual road through it.

I do not see how knowing why the Murder tree is here will help. The Tzar does not seem to be the kind of person to forgive and forget or the Kislev people in general. Even if it is some item or something risking Drycha getting it is a bad idea on so many levels.

This really sounds like you're being led astray by metagaming. It seems like you're not evaluating an investigation of the Boyar on its in-universe merits alone, but by the fact that it's the only apparent line of investigation, so therefore you're convinced it must be able to crack the mystery open. That you're seeing this as a binary choice between [Fight Enemy] and [Solve Mystery]. But that's not the choice. The choice is to join part of the forces or to investigate the Boyar or to do literally anything else via write in, and people who are debating how likely it is for the investigation to lead to tangible results are not wrong for doing so.
no, i understand it could still have lead (would have most likely lead) to a fight but it was the only option that would attempt to find out the reason for them being there. the only other option would have been to parlay which was only later and through another choice shown as a option. if we had not brought the kreml guard we would not have the option to parlay but the option to investigate the boyar was there from the beginning. and i also didnt mean for the choice now, now it is pretty much a binary choice of hoping the boyar is the key or joining the battle from the beginning. but people argued that investigating the boyar was useless even before now and i fundamentally disagree with that, both from a in universe stand point as well as a meta "what option would boney give us and not set the thread on fire" sense. if the choice of "investigate the boyar" would have won in the beginning and your writing was in essence "lol, he knows jack shit and you wasted a option" then that would have been truly weird and would have launched a avalanche of complaints.

this is not meant as gotcha of " of course the boyar would have all the answers" but i do believe it would have revealed important information that could have been used. (in the parlay for example.)

I prefer to keep an eye out for attempts to murder the Tzar or the offending Boyar.

Without any metagaming, we know these are forces from Athel Loren and at least one Ulgu-user. So there's a high risk of magically-skilled assassins anyway, Shadowdancers, Waystalkers, Branchwraiths, no matter what, it is possible someone will try to kill the leadership.

I absolutely guarantee you that I do not bend the events of the quest around the flammability of the thread or the likelihood of complaints.

If the Boyar knows jack shit, then investigating him can tell you that the Boyar knows jack shit, which would rule out several of the theories advanced so far. That hypothetical is not a pie-in-the-face personal insult from me to the thread, it is an entirely possible state of affairs. Anyone that has metagamed themselves into thinking it isn't should reassess.

Scouting is going to be hugely important here.

Even apart from the possibility that the boyar may have known nothing there is also the chance that he would be guilty as sin but also skilled enough and lucky enough to pull the wool over Mathilde's eyes. After all Mutant McChunky Arm managed to stay entirely hidden and with good enough rolls could even have evaded all the stacked bonuses we brought against him. By contrast all the boyar would have had to to is last against a much lesser pressure for comparatively less time.

I am fully aware of the 2003 army spell list but the Ice Witches don't have a standardised tradition at the moment. The Ice Court is an ephemeral concept not an organisation and they operate entirely master to student, so "spell list" isn't much of a thing. As such, I'm assuming that they have more of a dynamic system, and as such I'm pulling from TW, which has a bigger list. I'm not under the impression that Ice Witches are somehow restricted to spells from "Tempest" or "Ice", but I do assume that they have more spells in their toolbox than the six in the 2003 list. It also helps that a lot of the spells from TW are just straight ripped from Realm of the Ice Queen, which is 100% a source that Boney uses.
This is from a bit ago, but I wanted to comment.

Assuming the Ice and Tempest divide is used in more stuff, it definitely strikes me as more something along the lines of the College's 'Mystical and Elemental' divisions- that any Ice Witch could use spells from either Ice or Tempest, with the divide just representing the focus of that spell.

She will never get 3/3 scouting if she doesn't scout, since thats, you know, how you level up. The risks are less than before now that there is sufficient amount of warm bodies accompanying us.

If anything, the risks are higher now than they were before. Sure there are other people scouting, but it's not like we would necessarily stick with them. If anything, we would probably pursue our own avenues of scouting (by ourselves) due to our specific abilities. And we would probably be specificly targeted by any enemy with wind sight (which we know they have). Previously, the enemy might not have been looking, but not they are gonna be looking for sure.

I think it's much more effective to stay as a reserve to heal named characters when needed and to be ready to reinforce when the enemy is engaged and distracted. If we go with the scouts, we are gonna be the #1 target for a first strike... and I wouldn't bet on us noticing valuable targets before they notice us with our measly 2/3 scouting.

I'd prefer investigating, but scouting or patrolling seem like aweful choices to me with very little reward for the gains. The other scouts are probably better thn us at scouting, the only thing we have over them is windsight and offensive power (and I wouldn't want to engage with only the scouts...).

Mathilde is tougher than any other scout, and faster than any other scout.

She is dramatically more likely to survive first contact with the enemy and make it back to report.
