They haven't really said anything about our half-yearly pay day from the EIC so I'm not too worried. We literally had the Grey patriarch in our very comfy furbished mountain top penthouse and he didn't see anything wrong with that.
The EIC is an intelligence apparatus we use for our duties a grey magister. Just like Regimand's inn chain. The vow of poverty is intentionally full of loopholes for smart greys to take advantage of as long as they are still working for the good of them empire. Stealing from nobles is not a loophole it is the very thing the vow is made to stop.

We have done way more illegal things and we can launder it through the EIC. I'm not worried.

We really have not, the worst we subtly steal niter collecting business in Stirland, not only would hat likely provoke more humor than outrage when compared to invading a home and looting it, the victim is the Elector count of Stirland who is now a friend and ally. Don't get me wrong it woud be really awkward if that came out but not the calamity that having plundered the seat of a noble house would be.

Even if we don't help ourselves to some silk sheets, I'd love to wander down to the nearest Ranaldite watering hole and talk loudly about all the treasure and hidden spots we saw while trying and failing to find evil magic anywhere.

Figure the rest will take care of itself.

Heck, maybe we linger lovingly over the silk sheets we noticed in our description, see if anyone slips us a set as payment.

'we can get away with it' is not a great argument for convincing the people that are against it on 'we can bend the oath, but we dont want to break it.' grounds.

'we can get away with it', is conceding that 'ya, its problemy a step over the fine line the grey order lets its members walk.

Our oath would have made us give the liber mortis to the grand theogonist personally, our oath would have not embezzel quite a bit of money from the coffers of stirland, our oath would have us Escort any and all hedge wizard straight to altdorf. The oaths are not absolute, and we have broken them before. And stealing from the unfahigers (which we are very sure stole it from the emperors palace) is much better then concealing the liber mortis.

No... it really would not, just because he has a copy does not mean he is the legal owner of every copy of the book, nothing in our oaths contradicts simply holding and reading the Liber Mortis, it's just that Imperial Authorities would have had Mathilde killed anyway because of the danger the lore within posed should she choose to use it (with only that use being oathbreaking).

The only thing we've done that is more illegal is read the liber mortis.

Don't get me wrong, I think it'll be a cool thing to do and I like the idea of finding and reclaiming some lost imperial treasures, but lets be clear—plundering the mansion is a direct violation of our vows, and the only reason we even have a chance of getting away with it is because of the specific heritage of this family. There are many people who do not want to play with the vow of poverty like that, and that is completely valid. Following the big-r Rules whilst bending or breaking the little-r rules is a key part of Mathilde's character, and this is a big-r Rule.

and i quote from the Articles of imperial magic:
No Magister may ever study the Forbidden Lores of the Daemonic Powers, nor the unholy ways of Necromancy, nor any other sorcery or witchcraft that utilises the wicked powers of Dark Magic. Any Magister found disregarding this Article is guilty of an Abominable Act and is both Heretic and Traitor and will be put to sword and fire immediately.

we also withheld the knowledge that the current empress is a lamian conspirator and (probably) head priestess of the cult of ranald

edit:
that last thing would fall under this i think. also from the articles.
All Magisters are required to exert themselves to seek out and counter such destructive and anti-Imperial machinations, practices, peoples, and creatures that are beyond the means of civil authorities and Sigmar's Templars to counter, but yet still serve the Daemon Gods or advance the corruption of Imperial citizens through any sorcerous or infernal means. This shall be the prime concern and purpose of the Colleges, their Orders and the Magisters belonging to them, and to fail in this duty is to render void all the Articles of this document and make obsolete their permission to practise arcane arts without hindrance.

We have had this conversation before, reading the book is not study of necromancy.

There is nothing about Lahmian conspirators or Ranald in a strict reading of the articles

thats actually not for us to decide, is it? we are clearly conceiling it because we think we would burn at the stake for reading it.

edit: looking at it, it doesnt even specify casting or having the intent to learn necromancy, just the study of the lore is forbidden. yes i understand why that rule gets bend a lot (otherwise you cant know your enemy and thats bad) but it still works with my statement.

I don't think Heidi was a conspirator any more than we were, and the cult of Ranald is legal in The Empire.
She was on Abelhelm's list of members of the conspiracy, for what that's worth.

We can certainly say that she wasn't a stooge like Mathilde, given that everyone thought she was a vampire.

She presumably inherited the spot from the actual Gabriella after assuming her role.

And there's this post by Boney:
For reference, [ ] Favour to Mira is definitely not the truth. The truth is 'the Empress you had assassinated was replaced by a woman who had previously pretended to be a member of the conspiracy you assassinated the Empress for being a part of, who was able to pull off the deception partly using Ranaldian magic which I personally gathered by being possessed by Mork and then funnelling that power to Ranald, and now I seek to bury this matter for the safety of my godson, the heir apparent'.
(Bold is mine)

she still is pretending to be a noble, which is probably against the law and shes tricking the current emperor which is definitely against the law and the articles.

also does anyone know the exact wording of the vow of poverty? i tried to find it but haven't had much luck.

also also we should go eat at mezzos with regimand. i wanna see what a wizarding restaurant is like.

Ok, I need a pickmeup, how does this ritual cast suspicion on the current Empress?

I mean neither the Emperor nor Empress is a Unfähiger (in pretend), right? so they shouldn't be in the sacrifice line?

The (assumed) enactor of the killings is a Haupt-Andersson, Heidi is pretending to be one.

Also, if in the course of this whole thing, the knowledge that she's not one gets out, that's very bad.

She is supposed to be the last (?) survivor of the Haupt-Anderssen line. And it's a Haupt-Anderssen who's killing off all the Unfahigers. Granted, the one doing the killing is probably a daemon-twisted Alberich Haupt-Anderssen, but a suspicious person might think that the Haupt-Anderssen Empress might be pulling the strings.

She was on Abelhelm's list of members of the conspiracy, for what that's worth.
Regimand and Mathilde's names were on the list too, so I'm not sure if it's worth anything.

and if hes still around (which we assume) then he knows this and can implicate her if he wants. this wouldn't hold too much weight but it might be enough to get people to investigate.

On top of what others have said the killings are deliberately mimicing the deaths of the Haupt-Anderssons, in timing and method. Thus the assumption one is involved. If it is a vengance ritual the natural suspect is the last remaining Haupt-Andersson which as far as anyone knows is Heidi.

[X] Plan The Hunt is On

I would prefer an option between Ransack and Plunder, like investigate as throughly as possible without causing damage, and only take things that obviously don't belong in the hands of the heirs of Dieter, i have little doubt there are obviously stolen artifacts around.

Pretty sure that "investigate as thoroughly as possible without doing damage" is what we did this turn. We can tell there are secret rooms and hidden compartments, but we're going to need to break the things they're hidden behind/within in order to safely access them.

There's also two different write ins that have a similar tone of stealing stuff that they shouldn't have:

-[] Plunder Krieglitz Manor
--[] Focus on information rather than wealth. Take documents and books, leave any gold or jewels.
--[] Secure anything dark that needs to be destroyed.
--[] Judge items of historical relevance and artifacts with a specific use case-by-case, based on the benefit to the Empire if they are back in the open rather than locked away.

-[] Ransack Krieglitz Manor
--[] Steal anything that the Unfahiger family shouldn't possess or otherwise can't openly claim as theirs.

was it? We know where the hidden rooms are, but the wording in the options make plunder sound subtle while ransack sound messy.

No to mention we haven't actually made any attempt to find the way to access the hidden rooms, at least a few of which Mathilde should be able to find with her training, it seems to me we searched the murder locations and little else
