Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
"The Throne has signalled that it has an interest in the matter," Lady Renxiang replied. "But is still to allow the Duchess' lead."
This scholar thus advises that funding would be best allocated to building and fortification projects over the weaponization programs. The parameters provided by Her Divine highness indicate that short and medium short term projects are to be prioritized during this centennial
...The concrete benefit we've seen the assimilation of the Cloud Tribes into the White Sky is that the White Sky have acquired a large population of warriors for their colonization projects. We know that the Empress has funded military projects focusing on increasing her military power in the short and medium term. This, I believe is the thread consensus, is preparation for the upcoming Empire-wide Civil War between the Sun and Bai, dragging in the rest of the Empire via alliances and generational grudges.

While the current talks for mutual peace and trade, a military alliance is not off the table in the future, especially if the Crone's winter migration, and thus the reach of the winter spirits of the White Sky, continues to move northward towards the Empire's current borders.

Or, in other words, the Empress is perhaps monitoring the possibility of the Emerald Sea dragging in another polity's armies into their upcoming civil war, I think. Whether she's contemplating using this to harm the Sun's faction or to block a possible increase in the Emerald Sea's military power, though, I can't tell.

I live for chapters like this where the girls can just relax and be friends together for even a moment. As much as I love the plot threads, action, and intrigue this story has, it's the quiet moments like this that elevate it imo.

We get to meet Baby Cai! I always love more Meizhen and Renxiang scenes!

Also we've already made an in with the beefcake snek, it's time to do the same to the music twink. Plus I wanna see what he thinks of Ling Qi's methods.

[X] Xia Anxi, since they had some shared interests.

[] Lao Keung, who seemed more down to earth.

Did we already earn our +1 with Lao Keung? If so he should be easier to handle, but if not Xia Anxi and our shared interests is probably more beneficial?

"Just whose retainer is Ling Qi?" Renxiang said over the rim of her cup.

"Yours, though only because I let her go," Meizhen teased.

"I am sitting right here," Ling Qi huffed.
You know, since Xiao Fen is also sitting right there I wonder if she's ever had the courage to ask why Meizhen did let Ling Qi go. That's a conversation whose dynamics could be interesting to see.

"It's okay, I remember, if it ever becomes relevant again. Third grandson of a viscount- uh," Sixiang paused in thought, their illusory figure rubbing their chin from their own perch on the arm of Ling Qi's chair. "Qiao, yeah that was it."
We see here the inherent flaw in relying on a creature born of Ling Qi's own mind to remember the names and faces of the unworthy.

I think I actually prefer Xia Anxi here. I want to give him a chance and get to know him when Meizhen's not around so he's not terrified of saying a wrong thing.

I cannot express in words how much I loved this chapter. It really hit on everything I love in this quest. First we have Ling Qi contemplating the Dao which is always nice. Then omg the next scene is my favourite to date. We see the girls relaxing each in a chair and drink to suit their tastes. I love seeing how relaxed Meizhen is in their company. Can you imagine Meizhen lounging at the beginning of the quest? Then we get to the banter omg the banter! I just can't.

"So you are," Meizhen said blithely. "What do you think of them by the by, aside from your admiration of Lao Keung's physique."

"Meizhen," Ling Qi hissed. "Spirits, I wasn't obvious right?"

"No, I just know you," Meizhen replied smugly.

"A match with the Thousand Lakes would not be terrible," Renxiang mused. "It would have disadvantages over an internal match, but not insurmountable ones. There would be benefits to the alliance as well."

"Lady Renxiang," Ling Qi complained, only to sigh.
This is just some of the most fun I have had reading this story. We have all these supposedly stoic and serious gals all gossiping and teasing each other like normal teenagers. It's brilliant. I know I'm gushing but I just dearly hope for more scene like this because this is what I love for.

"Hm? Ling Qi's ways are unorthodox, but she produces results. A single grandchild is likely not worth investigation," her liege said, cracking open her eyes.
Let me guess, that Qiao family is a Diao retainer, and just happens to be the onesin charge of the place the letter was sabotaged....

"I don't have too much of a read yet, I've only known them for a few hours. Lao Keung has some resentment in him a think, but it is not indiviualized. Xia Anxi is very prideful, but he seems frightened of you, Meizhen."
Lao Keung is resentful? oh my, who would have though, that a lower caste bai would be angered by the "glorious" caste system? :V

Xia Anxi though..... heh, prideful.

I would prefer to eliminate the festering anger before it can grow, but pride can make people do stupider things, so learning the levers that move it would be good.... and we already befriended with LK.

Gonna vote for this tbh. Mostly because last vote went to muscle snek. Rather not begin monofocusing right out of the gate with new characters.

I am really interested in how he will act when there isn't a white serpent, even a cinnamon roll like Meizhen, hovering over his shoulder.

I think I prefer

We've started working on the other one already and this seems like a good chance to get to know them.

Even Renxiang is getting in on teasing Ling Qi for her Ever Hungering Gaze

Also, the Imperial observer is gonna be Kang isn't it?
Hm. Unless the goal is for the Throne to mess with things I'd expect an Agent from the MOI as they both have the loyalty to get the job done, and avoid the politics inherent in sending a member of a Celestial Peak Clan. This is especially true if it is the Empress who has an interest as the agent in question should have a direct line of communication with her, and that allows her agent to differ to the Cai as they're simply "observing to insure the integrity of the negotiations", which would inherently cut down on any funny business on our side of the negotiations.

It behooves her to keep an eye on all the factions since the Zheng are openly cozying up with the Fields thus creating a third maybe fourth faction
