Good morning, squad. Looks like I'm gonna have to get back in the habit of checking my phone when I wake up in the night because the cat has decided to prey on my toes so I don't miss updates.

I want to say, first off, that I really appreciated having the short scene of Mathilde+Pan cuteness at the start. It helps make this sequence of "getting our ducks in a row for the next major arc" feel more alive and grounded in our characters, and not just a succession of picking bennies off a chart. Also, hair-brushing and such is a tender activity that I am super fond of in my own relationship and it was just super cute.

Anyway, since like a fool and a casual I slept through the update going up and the vote opening, I'm just gonna drop my vote here while I catch up with the thread and before I look at the tally. Only 8 pages behind, that's not too bad.

[X] DIPLO: Polyglot
This is what I really want. We need to acquire more language skills, especially with the onset of B O O K from Laurelorn and possibly a Great Library in K8P as well. The only downside is that people might resurrect the "Warhammer Fantasy's linguistic development is unrealistic" argument.

[X] DIPLO: Dawri
That said, as a constant booster of Team Dwarf, I can't not vote for this. If it turns out Polyglot and Dawri are the top two... I'm not sure what i'll do.

[X] LESSON: Mystic
[X] LESSON: Theologian
Very happy with either of these. Gods gods gods.

So we know that Mathilde can't use divine magic ever, but Theurgy is firmly in the camp of "try it and find out."

I strongly suspect that if we wish to pursue that path, Theologian would be a useful, possibly even necessary, trait for us.

Definitely better than Mystic, which I suspect would lock us out of that path (but the Mystic trait would mean that gods are less likely to smite us for trying to dissect their miracles like frogs).

I favour the traits that Mathilde has had in practice for a long time and just hasn't formalised into a trait.
[X] LESSON: Poker Face
[X] LESSON: Leader
[X] DIPLO: Mentor
[X] DIPLO: Draconic Fascination
[X] DIPLO: Dawri

And as a pet vote:
[X] LESSON: Theologian

No, Wizards and nobility have entirely separate and distinct sets of privileges and obligations. Wizards don't have to raise a militia in times of war, minor nobles don't have to investigate magical phenomena.
.... does that mean that when the next big vampire invasion of striland happens, we will have to round up our goat herders?

Peronally, I love the idea of a lady wizard leading a bunch of slingers, with magic slings! into battle.

So while its not my 'favourite' option, i've been convinced that poker face is just too in character for us when having to deal with stuff out of our league to not have as a trait.

Yes, Mathilde would be theoretically responsible for making sure that anyone physically able to serve would make themselves available in times of crisis, which would generally mean making their way to the nearest town and then on to wherever the local Baron or Count has said they're to muster - which for Mathilde's lands would be Roswita, which cuts out a middle-man. Mathilde's Steward would be responsible for that in her absence, and failing that the local community leaders know to round everyone up and point them in the right direction.

There was a time when every individual Knight would be commanding their individual handful of peasants, but the Empire is a lot more centralized these days.

All right, I've caught up on the thread. Wasn't too hard, since most of it was just votes.
Could someone with more knowledge of Khazalid than me tell us what exactly Dawri means?
This is a word that means 'as good as something can get without proving itself over a few decades', or, literally, 'dwarf-like'.
(Relatedly, if Dhar Insight wins, I hope the trait shows up on our char sheet as "Dhari")
...how big do the We get again?
The Egg-Layers are the most massive of the We and rival an Arachnarok Spider in size
The Web-Weavers are the smallest of the We, each about the size of a medium-sized dog
The Hunters are the only members of a Hive that will regularly venture away from the others, and are about the size of a pony
But the Egg-Layers are the most important members of the hive, so no mounting a howdah on them.

From 4e, which you should ignore. Pretend does not exist. Voting with influence from it and attempting to influence others using information we should ignore and that doesn't apply to this quest are not things we should do.

I see nothing about that particular part of the source material that clashes with much if any of Boney's existing worldbuilding, and thus there's a decent (though certainly not 100%) chance that it will show up in some form in the story.

Or, to put it more explicitly:

Thing that might happen: "One of the three big towers in Tor Linathel was at some point/still is associated with dragons."

Thing that almost certainly won't happen: "Mathilde can directly follow the adventuring quest hook from Warhammer Fantasy RPG 4th Ed -- Archives of the Empire - Vol. I where she is sent on a mission by Prince Aesryn (who feels his sister is unworthy and covets her crown) to investigate the rumor of a nesting dragon spreading in the Empire near Schadensumpf marsh."

Do you see the difference?

once again, when it comes to this group of elves, its our best source: so its a bit* of a exception to the rules.

* baring stuff like soulstones that boney has WOB away.

It may be something that Boney uses, yes. That doesn't change that he told us to ignore 4e, of which Archives of the Empire forms a part of, except the very specific bits he's used. It's permitted to bring up the Archives stuff that's showed up in this quest, such as the existence of the lornalim trees, but not the Archives stuff that hasn't showed up in this quest, like the dragon tower, even if it's something Boney might use at some point in the future.

Is this something you're declaring on your own authority or has Boney actually said something to this effect?

I know people like polyglot, it's an attractive idea, but at this point, we pretty much know what we need to know.

[X] DIPLO: Trucemaker

Because putting off grudges to fight the greater threat is the only way to survive.

[X] LESSON: Dhar Insight

Knowing how to make bad magic should hopefully translate into knowing how to not make bad magic.

[X] LESSON: Light Fingers
It's not theft, it's espionage. The enemies of the Empire and the Karaz Ankor have all sorts of interesting and portable items that would do a lot of good in friendly hands, from supplies to devices to paperwork.
I haven't seen anyone sweettalk this option or give their perspective and you are the only person with several hundred posts under your belt that chose this as the only Lesson option to vote for. Are you willing to share your perspective?

Especially in this vote where everything is beneficial and we are voting for which mechanical buff and/or character trait acknowledgment badge we subjectively like the most, I am quite interested in seeing other people's perspectives that I am not quite able to wrap my head around.

If you don't want to be put on the spot, just ignore my request.
But the Egg-Layers are the most important members of the hive, so no mounting a howdah on them.
Once their nutrition and civilization becomes so high that food is not a bottleneck anymore and using stuff originally meant for one thing to instead do a different specialized job becomes more normalized, I'm pretty sure that the We will have no problem repurposing some of their wombs into siege engines. Currently they are only too valuable because having many is too costly and reproduction is too important to risk the few that they do have.

BoneyM already said that he is taking a lot of inspiration from 4e because other sources are sparse. So while it is definitely not a given, there's a bigger than baseline chance of those rookeries being a thing.

So you are right in warning people that none of that should be considered quest canon and that we shouldn't get our hopes up. But there has also been no injunction against bringing up the possibility and trying to ban arguments based on supposed thread rules goes too far.
Is this something you're declaring on your own authority or has Boney actually said something to this effect?
BoneyM has said something to that effect. Someone else will have to dig it up though because I'm on mobile.

[ ] DIPLO: Dawri
You've lived along Dwarves for long enough that your Wizard robes and Arcane Marks are often the only things preventing you from being mistaken for one.

I truly wish to take this option but I'm afraid that there are other traits that are much more needed right now.

[X] DIPLO: Interfaith Dialogue
Ranald isn't the most accepted of Gods, but you're growing adept at finding common ground with the other faiths of the Old World.

Could help us a lot for piety actions, and we might need it to convince Thungni worshipers, which are basically all runesmiths, to help us in the waystones project.

[ ] DIPLO: Mentor
Though you've never taken an Apprentice of your own, you have spent quite a bit of time taking less-experienced Wizards under your wing.
I would have liked this trait a lot, but waystones project is a priority.

[X] DIPLO: Polyglot
If you had been unable to use Khazalid as a bridging language, there were many encounters that could have gone quite badly. There's a great deal of potential benefits to further expanding your linguistic lexicon.

[X] DIPLO: Trucemaker
Sometimes the best battle is one you never fight. Every life not spent fighting lesser evils can be turned against the greater ones.

These two traits I think are the most important to keep the research united at least long enough to make some breaktrough.

[ ] LESSON: Cartographer
Being able to explore, record, and subsequently navigate unfriendly territory is an incredibly useful and often underrated skill.

I would have liked this before the expedition but right now I don't think it will be much needed.

[X] LESSON: Dhar Insight
You've seen Daemons, the Chaos Wastes, the Windfall. You're reaching as thorough an understanding of the fel energies of Dark Magic as can be attained without actually wielding them.

Even after the waystones project this could help us a lot in our fight against Chaos and necromancy.

[X] LESSON: Leader
Despite not seeking it, once more you found yourself in military command. Perhaps this tendency is something to be embraced.

This trait might be needed to dirige the project.

[ ] LESSON: Light Fingers
It's not theft, it's espionage. The enemies of the Empire and the Karaz Ankor have all sorts of interesting and portable items that would do a lot of good in friendly hands, from supplies to devices to paperwork.

Once again need to prioritise the waystones project, if not for that I would have definitely voted for it.

[ ] LESSON: Logistician
Warriors win battles, logistics wins wars. Being able to get what you need to where you need it is halfway to victory.

Same for that.

[ ] LESSON: Poker Face
Acting like you always know what's going on has gone from a source of personal amusement to a vital diplomatic first line of defence.

And that.

Polyglot will likely still involve spending AP to actually learn the languages and while there are some languages that I'd be interested in learning in the future, I hate the idea of once again pushing our research back.
