I see no particular reason to keep the warrior nobility alive into the far future for the sake of nostalgia.I understand what Richard wants. That was the original joke when Daenerys suggested we make his castle a flying one - it fits the wording but not the spirit of the thing.
Nevertheless, I suggest giving him a castle that looks entirely normal even though it absolutely isn't. This is IMO completely IC (just look at how often Goldfish writes "throw magic items at them!" votes), fits what Richard actually wants (a nice small castle to retire to someday) and avoids the issue of said castle being an entirely useless piece of set-dressing.
The purpose of a castle in Westeros isn't just to be a house. It's also a long-term guarantee of safety and relevance for your son's line. If we're giving Richard a castle it'll obviously have to be warded to some extent, so why not make it able to fly in an emergency? That way Richard can keep it on the ground in his family's ancestral lands, and yet it's still relevant to his descendants who can ride it into battle as needed in the far future.
Furthermore, I retract all my support for flying palaces of any kind.
