Build suggestions for Samwell Tarly:
  • Generalist Wizard
  • Spontaneous Divination ACF at level 5 (replaces level 5 bonus feat)
    • This is amazing versatility, and if you're not rising above level 5 it's impossible to find a better front-loaded PrC.
  • Impromptu Metamagic ACF (replaces familiar)
    • 4 free Extends a day is great at CL 5. I hesitated between Extend and Silent, but Extend is useful if he intends to self-buff somehow.
  • Feats: Skill Focus (Knowledge (arcana)) + Extend Spell + Invisible Spell + Alacritous Cogitation + 2 Flaws + Scribe Scroll (B) at level 1, Fiery Burst at level 3
    • This feat selection opens Loremaster if he ever manages to rise above level 5. It's also good for a versatile generalist: discreet spells as needed, Alacritous Cogitation to cover for a weird emergency, Fiery Burst for combat to impress his father and fit with the latest interlude.

Spontaneous Divination is a great choice for him. Mia Netcatcher has that one, too. He doesn't need a crafting feat at 5th level like our standard Wizard students.

Loremaster seems like the way to go for Samwell.

As the heir of a major house, he will rate receiving a permanent Arcane Concordance soon-ish. All of our Arcane casters swear by it!

Normally we set it to Silent spells, since they all have Bracers of Arcane Freedom for 2/Day Still spells. With Bracers for Still spells, Impromptu Metamagic paired with the Silent Spell feat, Samwell could have his Arcane Concordance set to Extend all of his spells.

That is what I want to do with Mia when she reaches 8th level. Retrain her Extend Spell feat to Silent Spell and give her Arcane Concordance with Extend Spell. That will work very nicely with her Invisible Summoning spells.

@Goldfish, are we paying to kit him out, or is his father expected to do it?
I'm not too sure why we'd kit him out (IIRC he's not actually working for us or anything, he's just our ward to score political points with Tarly and because we felt bad for him). Or is kitting out our wards something we do even if we don't expect to turn them into agents later? If so, then I suggest giving him a handy haversack too.

Eh, I wouldn't expect Randyl to be generous with Samwell. He's too much of an ass for that.

As one of our wards, he would get the full kit, which includes a Handy Haversack.

We are not turning him into our loyal minion? :???:
This concept makes no sense to me.

He'll be loyal, but will he be useful? Right now he's a mageling among others, who's unlikely to level higher. Eventually he'll be an extra loyal Lord, but not of an especially important/powerful place.
We're not picky about minion power levels. That's discriminatory!

Samwell is definitely on the career track to transition from ward to minion when the time comes.
