Rune Trace is a neat spell. Super niche, but for what it does, it does really well. The problem with using it here, or Black Talon, is that Lya doesn't have any way to reproduce it without burning another Wild Arcana. And the only one among our party with the Reach Spell Metamagic feat is Aife, who would need to use a Miracle to duplicate Rune Trace. That's a problem we can remedy, but not right now. Need to remember to add a bunch of Lesser Reach Spell Metamagic Rods to our next commission order, along with a more advanced one for higher level spells.@Goldfish think it's worth burning some resources to cast a reached Rune Trace? It'd likely give less information than Lya directly, but it has some built in protections and gets some of the most immediately relevant information.
To save on higher level spell slots we could also just use Black Talon to briefly acquire a 10 foot magical poking arm instead of using reached spell.

Added having Aife Commune with the Ferryman, since he seems like the best bet for actionable intel in this situation, along with specifically mentioning that we won't proceed until we've learned all we can.@Goldfish, some things to consider:
- we have no certainty that we were not led in a specific direction by the squids
- we might have been directed here in the hope that we destroy that rune barrier for the squids
- if we emerge onto a battlefield with a Shoggoth and Qyburn in the lead, people will assume we are squid allies
- damaging that barrier might cause temporal paradoxes
Examine the barrier before deciding what to do AND divine what the hell is going on here, THEN decide if we should morph the Shoggoth into an anthropomorphic pitcher of lemonade and throw it through the wall.
I was thinking Viserys could blood wish the rune trace since the level of information it gives is easy enough to convey to the rest of the party. From there Lya could go into the actual messing with it part with some context, instead of having to blindly interact with runes that have an unknown trigger condition.Rune Trace is a neat spell. If Lya cannot discern what exactly the rune circle does, it might still be worth using another Wild Arcana, though I'm wary of that since we don't know what lies above.
The Myrkdreki Twins haven't used their Ancestral Awakening spells so far today. It was part of an earlier combat plan, but that got interrupted by the Surprise!Shoggoths. One of them could use it to learn Rune Trace and Spectral Hand in order to cast it at range. Viserys could do it, too, but I don't want to waste his AA spell, in the event that we need to learned something special to handle whatever happens next.I was thinking Viserys could blood wish the rune trace since the level of information it gives is easy enough to convey to the rest of the party. Using the illusion's senses is a good way to protect from direct blowback, but if they're triggered by being read and do something like explode/set off an alarm instead of cursing the reader we'd still probably be screwed.
Without reach I'm concerned about getting that close to it though; we'd need an alternative to make this reasonably safe.
They can also use Shadow Necromancy for Spectral Hand, leaving another pick of Ancestral Awakening. The Myrkdreki Twins haven't used their Ancestral Awakening spells so far today. EDIT: Added that to the plan.
Forgot they had that one, which is sad, because now that I think about it, I believe I was the one who pointed that spell out to you? They can also use Shadow Necromancy for Spectral Hand, leaving another pick of Ancestral Awakening.
BTW, @DragonParadox, this chapter was very trippy (and slightly gruesome), but it was still pretty cool. I just wish I knew more of what is going on. 🤓
You said we failed a Knowledge check to figure it out. Was it a History, Arcana, or Planes check? Can you tell us what it was, or do we need to wait to learn it IC?
Soon we'll have direct access to our libraries.Glad you liked it.
The check was history, though if you had made it there would have been follow ups too.
Soon we'll have direct access to our libraries.
We'll never fail a knowledge check ever again.
Copy/Paste eldritch incantations. It's the latest in Old One cultist technology. No, DP, you are writing with your hands again!
Either that, or technology has advanced enough to know you were saying that. Which is incredibly scary
(Or maybe he dictated it letter by letter? Jeez, that seems awkward)

I would like to claim that I possess eldritch text to speech that is sadly just copy/paste and replace.
Not only that, but you specifically pointed it out as a substitute for Spectral Hand.Forgot they had that one, which is sad, because now that I think about it, I believe I was the one who pointed that spell out to you?
Added Greater Disrupt Undead as the second spell. It's a solid spell to use against Undead, and it looks like they may be involved with whatever we do next. Unless ya'll have any better ideas?
I miss my teenaged brain. Sure, it was bathed in a hormonal soup that led to an embarrassing number of bad decisions, but it's memory was fucking amazing. 😔Not only that, but you specifically pointed it out as a substitute for Spectral Hand.
