We act normal and then what?
Well for starters, the expedition can send a runner/gyrocopter/scout back to the KA with the info that a.) Dum (and/or it's waystone network) is still intact enough to be pumping power, and b.) something in and around where Karak Vlag used to be is hijacking said power and using a memetic defense to cover it up.

That way, even if we don't come up with any better options than the ones we have available now we'll still be able to pick one of those options secure in the knowledge that even if we fuck up and die others will know of the problem and be able to muster up an army (or whatever else they might need) to come fix it.

I mean, just the first fact is in and of itself is a partial success for our expedition's primary goal (figure out what Karag Dum's status is) and something Thorgrimm/the KA as a whole would want to know.

She won't focus on investigating until everyone else gets there, because trying to see what's going on through that much stone (which is, after all, an excellent insulator) would take all her attention and would mean she won't be able to react as quickly if it starts doing something.
Yeah, OK, changing my mind. Achieving concentration of force and then trying to figure out what the actual fuck with magesight seems like a reasonable course of action.

Not sure why you are keeping 'female protagonist'.
Of all the many, many things that define Mathilde, being female is perhaps the least important.
Well, people do use these tags to find new quests and not just to meme, and some people care about the gender of the quest protagonist.

My problem with leaving is... then what? Seriously, then what?

We go back and tell them, "A portal to hell might be about to open; it's power source is about a mile away. No, we don't know where the portal will open. No, we can't do anything to stop it from here. The power source is about a mile away and I stopped investigating so I don't know where it's going. No, I'm not even sure it's a portal. I stopped investigating. Just try to be alert. Stay frosty."

Not die?

Get Lilijana and the Ancient Widow's backing?

Put Slayers and steel between ourselves and prospective demons?

Pass by without anything triggering, and reach Dum without getting mulched by demons?

Disrupt the Waystone shenanigans happening at Dum, and then laugh as the Vlag ritual's fuel source is cut off, while we're nowhere near ground zero?

Using the Lord of Change example I'm looking at it like this:

A: Getting in a magical duel with a Lord of Change before they can complete/divert/whatever their Ritual, But with Dragon support.

B: Possibly getting in a Magical duel with a Lord of Change after they completed/diverted/whatever their ritual, But with Dragon support and Steamship support.

If I though this might be a Daemon of any other flavor than Tzeentch, I'd argue for act casual and get the guns. But I just really don't want to give a Tzeentchian time to play with 185 (potential) cumulative years of Karak Juice.
See, I feel like A is just Click Here to Die, B is Probably Die Unless the Ancient Widow can come in clutch, and secret option C, go to Dum, disrupt the ritual from the Waystone there, and laugh, is the only actual winning option on the table.

Will an extra hour, or an extra week, be enough time for Tzeentch to trigger his probably doomsday plot? Maybe. Do I think we have a better chance of stopping it by skulking off to Dum than telling the mountain it isn't hard enough? Yep.

(Although if we do take secret option C, I'm 1000% in favor of detouring down through the Dark Lands instead of passing Vlag on the way back.)

Given it implies the other two options are "allow a Lord of Change to engage you in a magical duel at a time of its choosing..."

Or perhaps, "give a Lord of Change more time and opportunity to attempt to get past your mental defenses unopposed."
Why do we need to 1v1 it, though? It might not attack us at all, and if it does, there are other wizards and Lilijana.

The 1v1 Magic Only Final Destination bit is the bit I object to.

As I understand it, some people search by that tag to find quests to read. It's a quest with a female protagonist, and if that's what someone wants to read, it makes sense to me they should be able to find this quest using that tag.

Yeah, definitely going for act normal then. I want everybody on standby while we focus on something like that. And a mile doesn't seem that far to go for gathering the forces.

Two things:

A) The expedition has no gryocopters, so any runner will be rather slow

B) The Karaz Ankor network is mega-secret, Mathilde isn't going to be saying anything explicit about it.

I would say that if there is even a 5% chance of being a demonic portal that could be open to attack the expedition we are EXTREMELY justified in triggering the alarm...
I disagree. We all already know the dangers of the Wastes. Adding to that with currently just barely beyond baseless worry will just needlessly stress everyone, especially since we have barely even started the journey yet.

Slow messages and cryptic (or just sealed letter equivalent) messages are a heck of a lot better than no messages. We don't need to spill any secrets, we just need to say "Examined Karak Vlag site, and am confident Karag Dum is partially intact. Will send further messages if I make it out of what looks like a major Chaos ritual possibly set up to trap the expedition."

That's a lot more informative than "Massive expedition disappears without a trace on journey to dangerous place."

You know, I almost feel like we're back in Stirland just happening upon evidence of Alcazad'e Black College. Like "oh, don't mind me, just minding my own business and seeing if I can't lend a hand... oh shit, semi-apocalyptic mess just waiting to happen!" Or maybe the Only Gork ritual. Like, we go in just to take a look around and see if we can be mildly useful, and instead stumble upon a massively important thing. Now we get to go in and kill everything again.

[X] Stand your ground

If the expedition's only a mile away, that changes my mind. That's like a 10 minute walk.

I initially read Stand Your Ground as staying and poking it, but it isn't.

So, as Exemplarius isn't exactly bursting his way out of the mountainside to murder us at the moment, I'd rather bluff until we are close to the one we brought specifically for this kind of weight class issue and talk it out.

@BoneyM if we take run are we running as fast as we can or as fast as the rangers can? Because with smoke and mirrors and shadow steed I am pretty sure we are faster than them. I feel it is important to know if that option is all of us going together or if it is us leaving the rangers behind to get out faster.
