The weapon is cool but I would be more than willing to weaken it just to make sure Waymar doesn't lose his kickass lightning powers everytime he picks up the blade.
He can use Energy Conversion to use Fire Lances instead while wielding Mourneblade. The caster level won't be enhanced, but the damage would be comparable, if not higher due to being Vulnerable to Fire.

It's a possibility, but not as attractive for Waymar as it was for Richard. Waymar has extremely effective ranges options in Lightning Lance and Channeled Lightning Lance + Whirling Blade. Waymar also is built to be a particularly focused charger.
Nothing says he can't learn it next tier of he doesn't this time.
if he doesn't gain Legendary Weapon this tier, Mythic Spellcasting to learn a Mythic version of Lightning Lance would be cool, too.
That would be a bit too unwieldy, IMO. Walking around with two great sword-sized blades strapped across his back is just asking to get stuck in a doorway.
When Zavaenia had flown in this morning with news of an ancient void-touched spirit released from some accursed artifact only to be destroyed by Zherys while it was trying to drag one of the Heralds into the Shadow Plane you had thought that would be the most notable discovery of the day, particularly since the tower had proven empty of all threats, though carved with countless runes unknown to Lya. Then Waymar had made his way up the slopes with a ghost at his heels, a princess of sorts, and news that he had dueled a true Other, a Lord of the Winter Court, for her soul. Of course he had, who else after all would find maidens to save in the ruins of a millennia old fortress buried under stone and ice?
"So could you help me with this?" your friend brandishes the sword he had killed the champion of Winter with.
"Lya is more of an expert on runes than me," you reply. You would probably be able to read most simple scripts by now, but you can almost feel the blade's aura on your skin. The work of simple runecraft this is not.
"I know, I mean to let go of it, it's cursed," he replies with a sheepish smile.
You open your mouth to say... something about the prospect of fighting ancient evils with a sword you just found in the halls of a people known to strike bargains with them, then you close it. The very first enchanted sword Waymar had ever used had after all been a demonic creation he ripped out of the hand of a cambion mid-fight. Instead you simply lay one hand on your friend's shoulder, another on the pummel of the Mournblade's pummel, and will them to part. The effort leaves a moment's dull pain behind your temples.
Lya eagerly picks up the sword from Waymar, lays it down through with magic not flesh, the cantrip turning it this way and that so she can read the runes and other more esoteric impressions. She listens to the tale of its making from the specter of Riwen without comment then remarks. "You know, I'm not sure if the one who made this was brilliant, mad or..?" she gives the spirit an apologetic look, but Riwen does not seem to notice, too enraptured at the sight of the sun. "Both," Lya continues. "Definitely both."
"What's brilliant?" Dany asks, obviously able to see the madness as clearly as the rest of you.
"Well, under the original agreement it was meant to be taken by the Power in the North as their price for teaching, right?" Lya asks, returning her almost disbelieving gaze to the ancient sword. "Waymar, what would you say was the greatest strength of the champion you fought?"
"It's connection to..." he trails off. "The End of All Things. He was trying to purify one of Them?"
"Release them from their shackles most like, purification would be beyond the scope of what you described," you interject. If this Dovak had not been a king who helped lead his people on the path to damnation, but just a mage-smith seeking to advance his craft in a time of waning magic, you might almost admire his sheer ambition.
Lya goes on to explain the boons the sword offers as well as its bane. Wherever might be said of the tragedy of its making it is a terrible weapon against all the servants of the Void and against the Others most of all.
Mournblade
Description: Written in runes ill-matched and terrible upon ancient bronze is an enchantment unlike any other among the works of the First Men. The sword that brings mourning this is, reaper of sorrows and giver of grief, yet bound deeper in its script is another blasphemous hope, to take the gifts that lie like a canker upon the soul and remind the pitiless what it is to feel pity.
Ability:
+4 Enchantment Bane
Void Bane: +4 Attack and 4d6 damage against servants of the Void
Frost Sunder: Ignores half of Armor and NA of Winter Touched creatures (Does not apply to Dodge DEX or deflection AC)
Torment of the Heartless: On a critical hit from this weapon against a servant of the Void the target must make a DC 22 Will save or be wracked by terrible remorse and rendered nauseated. On a successful save the target is still sickened.
Curse: Will seal away the power the bearer values most. A mindless wielder is immune to the bane, but also unable to benefit from the boon beyond the base enchantment bonus. The curse's power runs soul deep, potentially able to seal away oaths of otherwise unbreakable loyalty, the corruption of the Lower Planes, perhaps even the Void itself.
Caster Level: 22
What do you do with the weapon?
[] Keep it in the armory for now, perhaps to study later
[] Hand it out to someone, you may need it before you leave the Valley of the Thenns

OOC: It was very nice from a narrative perspective to have Lya around so I could explain about the history of the sword and the hopes of it maker in one go rather than having to wait for research.
@DragonParadox, if the blade locks away what the wearer believes to be their greatest strength, will a good enough roll of Autohypnosis allow one to have it lock away some other aspect of their being than the one it'll usually go for?
Unfortunately not, auto hypnosis affects the mind, this is soul deep. Maybe if you had some kind of Mythic user of the skill they could pull off deceiving their very soul, but normally no.

[X] Keep it sheathed and encased in lead for now, until Lya can give it a more in-depth study.
The enchantments aren't bad but it ain't no minor artifact. It does have some unique effects though.
If it was actually capable of separating Others from the Void it would be invaluable for obvious reasons, but I think Lya says all it can do is allow them to act freely, and only while made to wield it.
It is as it would affect all servants of the void including say those who serve the Bloodstone Emperor. Unfortunately it uses Winterbane as a base and so does not stack with its effects.
