Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Jumping into a date with someone she's not comfortable yet won't help. Getting to know them first and then doing the thing might, but as of now this could make the problem worse.
Thing is, if left to her own LQ will probably never get comfortable with him. Because she wont take the step to try to get comfortable around him herself without poking. She is far more comfortable staying in her comfort zone and ignoring stuff outside it until it goes away.

She cant do that any more, not when it is actually hurting her chances of getting friends or allies during social stuff.

Which option will let us go talk to Bai Meizhen sooner? Imo it's the spar. We need to rap this up, so we can go be excited for best snek.

Hm. Looking at things from Bao Qian's perspective, he's actually been putting in a fair amount of effort at not spooking the skittish potential waifu (notice the way the business deals have no penalties for cancellation, only requests for advance notice - from a business perspective, that's pretty much a "you can leave whenever you're not comfortable, just don't be too rude about it") and it seems to be paying off.

It's also notable that he asked about gossip on his cousin (and then a dinner date when Ling Qi didn't divulge) immediately after asked for a personal favor - he seems to be trying to avoid building up obligations that might make us feel overly pressured. That's pretty reasonable on his part because LQ has been drifting about and showing interest in her own way, so as long as he just keeps anything from interfering with that he'll get what he wants in the end.

With that in mind, I think that he would actually prefer a spar to a dinner date that went badly - LQ faffing about trying to get closer in her own way is pretty high in his list of priorities, so a spar is just more of the same there, while a date that went badly enough to spook her into avoiding him for a bit would be counterproductive.

He'd no doubt be pretty happy if we accepted a dinner date and it went well, but based on the circumstances in which he offered it the general sentiment was to open up an additional avenue for LQ to express interest if she was comfortable with it. That would tend to indicate that a dinner date that didn't go terribly badly but was a little uncomfortable for Ling Qi and caused her to freeze up interactions a bit would be just as okay with him as a spar - they'd both be LQ showing interest and making roughly equivalent progress, just a difference of jumps and spurts over steady progress.

[X] Carefully accepted. She had to begin dialing down her discomfort somewhere. [Potentially, Information and improved relationship with Bao Qian, Ling Qi uncomfortable, potentially negative outcome.]

If Meizhen can get a shut in nerd spider cactus to be her GF we can go on a single date with a guy who we've treated as if he's a block of plutonium: useful but also something you wear the Class A hazmat suit when interacting with.

So, let's talk about these contracts we've gotten into.
They continued to speak for several hours as the sun crawled toward the horizon, hashing out the many, many details of delivering the product, and sales percentages and other things that left Ling Qi feeling tired out. Even then it paled in comparison to the needs of setting things up for hanyi. How many songs she would compose for the initial run, and by what deadline, and the subject matter of the melodies and on and on.

In the end, they worked out what Ling Qi thought was a fairly good deal. Bao Qian would pay her five green stones for one months worth of Zhengui's ash, to be collected at her expense. Bao Qian would keep the profits from the first month's sale. For each month following he would provide one green stone for the ash, but also split the profits of the sale with her, fifty five parts to forty five in her favor.

Hanyi's situation was a less clear cut. It would take some time for him to 'promote' her and receive significant sales. She would give him two green stones, taken from Zhengui's end of the deal to help cover the material costs of the first run, and they would split the initial sales, sixty to forty in Hanyi's favor. They would renegotiate at the end of the year when the situation became more clear.

A total of 5 greenstones for the first month's worth of Zhengui's ash. That doesn't include any profits. But every month after that we get a guaranteed 1 greenstone plus 55% of the profits. The question then becomes... is this gross profit we are distributing or net profit? Or, in other words, does the 1 greenstone that Qian is paying us count against the profit he makes?

The next question is what the expectations for profit Qian is expecting here. Apparently it is much more stable, so there should be an expectation for the amount of profit that can be gathered. Is there any insight into those expectations you would be willing to provide @yrsillar?

Without that knowledge, it is hard to judge exactly how profitable this endeavor would be for us, but it is certain to be more profitable than doing nothing with the ash. Furthermore, as Zhengui progresses through the realms, I have to imagine that the ash he would create either increase in amount or in potency or both. Given that, I expect that profits actually increase as the years proceed, probably not enough to be significantly appreciable during our time in the Sect though.

either way, this seems to be profitable for us in ways that we've lacked significantly during our time in the Sect. Something consistent and stable will help immensely in planning fund expenditures (at least narratively).

Now, Hanyi's contract is a lot less clear. Larger profit margins, but no stable guarantee of money. Either way, it'll be up to Hanyi's performance, the ability of Qian to sell the productions, and how much people will be wanting to buy these productions. I guess we'll see in the following months just how successful this idea is.

These aren't really equivalent. LQ isn't Qingling, and her issues aren't Qingling's either.

Open now.

If it goes well, we'll have achieved character growth, and can be that much more confident in our ability to fill the role CRX wants for us. If it goes poorly, we'll have achieved an interesting story beat. Either way, the quest wins; the potential outcomes of dinner are both genuinely interesting.

Sparring is certainly cute, but doesn't change anything in an interesting way. He gets exposed to Ling Qi's Ling-Qi-ness, that's all.

Point is with this and Ling Qi doing recordings of her own we're likely going to be able to keep up with our draining finances for the foreseeable future. It'll be months and years before we reach the point where the economy starts getting tight again and by the time we join the army with Renxiang I assume we'll have a real salary. By then we'll have to look at sources of income to fuel Cyan and a future clan rather than scrounging up side jobs with our family, so this should definitely work in the short term.

Because what part of "Blurted out a request to spar instead, that helped cultivators understand each other, right?!" sounds like Ling Qi is not just going to try to beat him up then flee afterwards?

Yeah, Meizhen is taking much more considerable risks coming out given her position and who Qingling is versus who Ling Qi was and Meizhen's position then. If it's awkward and weird who gives a shit. It's just dinner with a boy close to our own age we met at school. This is the kiddy pool. We're gonna be at Court and managing a fief in a year and going to be courted by guys ten times our age and ten times more experience socially than us.

Funny story, I actually changed my mind about this, then changed it back again.

I originally wanted to do this for the humour. Then I changed my mind because I thought: Ling Qi is trying to improve herself socially, let us not sabotage her just for the lolz.

But then I realised: this is a date. If we ain't ourselves, the partner ain't worth it. So, since this is a date, we must be as us as possible, and if he dislikes that, well, we escaped a potentially harmful relationship. So I returned to my original choice but for entirely different reasons.
