@BoneyM are we going to get the results of the "Hire a Priest of Esmerelda to teach the We." action at the Council meeting at the same time we hear the reports from the other Councillors? You didn't show us the rolls this time around.

I'd rather give Max headpats since we know less of him than even Johan, and he's been doing pretty well by Mathilde.

I was just wondering @BoneyM, given that Max is a co-author of a lot of Mathilde's papers and presumably got a chunk of college favor with it; what is his general standing in the College's academic circle as far as Mathilde expects?

I forgot it. I can't edit it in just now but I'll sort it out in the next few hours.

For Max, the College's academic circle is Johann. He's fairly removed from direct contact with the Gold College, and whatever correspondence he does receive isn't known to Mathilde. But it is likely that he and Panoramia would be at or approaching the point where they consider going for Magister.

[Learn Cloak Activity: Learning, 23+26=49.]

Cloak Activity is not, in theory, a difficult spell. But it is one that by definition requires you to split your attention. You can maintain it well enough when you give it your full concentration, but when you try to do something else - and there's no point to the spell if you're not doing something else - it frays at the edges before collapsing in on itself. You're right on the cusp of grasping it, you know you are, but with your schedule so efficiently filled there's no more time to give.

Aagggghhh.

The silver lining is that we got Magic 8. No more spell learning.

But that fucking Arcane Mark.

In the strange time-dilation that takes hold when something you wrote is being read, you wait impatiently for Max to weigh in. "Why are you doing it backwards?" he asks, confused.

"What do you mean?"

"You're starting from the actual magic and then breaking it down into the foundational elements over the course of the paper. You're not trying to prove how it works, you're trying to show where it's weak. Lay out the groundwork and then use the actual magic as demonstrations of the principles."

You ponder his words for half a second, then give a hurried "thanks" as you grab the paper back and scrabble through the drawers to find a pair of scissors to rearrange the attempt into a draft of a proper paper, as Max returns to his cushion nest with a satisfied smile.

Max, you know I love you, right?

Damn.

M / Universal Confusion: Bewilder, but applies to a whole group at once, up to about a ten meter diameter. Short range.
Mastery - Cloud of Confusion: You can cast the spell as a billowing cloud of bewildering gas, which pours from you for several minutes, constantly effecting everyone nearby.
- Mathilde can cast both the normal spell and the Mastered version. Both are indiscriminate, but the normal version applies to anyone within that radius at the time of casting, whereas the Mastered version continues outputting the gas over minutes to effect everyone touched by it.
- The Mastered version does not need to be inhaled to take effect. Mathilde is immune to it, as is Wolf; everyone else will suffer from Bewilder unless they're strong-willed enough to shake it off.

K / Smoke and Mirrors: The mark of a Grey Battle Wizard is the ability to weave teleportation cantrips into other spells they cast. They appear to jump around the battlefield at will, hopping anywhere within short range with every spell they cast.
- Can be tied into a Fiendishly Complex or Battle Magic spell to teleport without any additional risk of miscast. Can also be cast on its own. Range is limited to line of sight and about a hundred yards or so.

So everyone realizes what this means, right? Mathilde can expel a cloud of gas that leaves everyone in a 10 meter radius confused, while simultaneously teleporting away.

She can literally vanish in a puff of (confusing) smoke!

Mostly mildly annoying, with a few noticeable benefits or larger downsides in specific situations.

[X] Yes, have one social interaction be initiated by someone other than Mathilde.

@BoneyM do you still not know how tags are added? Also will it be a purely random roll or someone who actually wants/can take the time to see Matt?

Try it and find out. The Colleges would do their best to protect Mathilde from official consequences for investigations that stayed inside the Articles of Imperial Magic, but there's all sorts of other possible consequences too.
Sounds like a job for an anonymous or pseudonym paper.
Or rather, since we're Grey, an "officially anonymous" paper, since the leadership is going to figure out who wrote that paper before letting it out into the world

Also like it'd cause a lot less uproar if it was written framed in terms of Wind magic being a subset of divine magic instead of the other way around

Dear @BoneyM, I have a question.

Despite being a single author you run an astonishingly productive quest. What do you think enables you to maintain such a writing output without quickly burning out? Are there certain habits or techniques or a particular process that works for you?

Every successful author seems to have different things that work for them, but I like to collect answers in the hopes of finding useful insights that I can adopt. The biggest one I've found that helps me so far is keeping a daily log of how many words I get on the page in a spreadsheet. 'I have a wife and children I am socially obligated to feed' also seems like a common motivator, but not one I can take advantage of at the moment. (I'm sure I'll figure out which closet I put them in eventually.)

Yes, have one social interaction be initiated by someone other than Mathilde.

Everybody you realize that this is going to push the Stirland characters and stuff like the fief and "go investigate X" even further to the bottom of the pile, right? It's not "a random choice form the list". It's people who actively have a reason to seek Mathilde out, which will usually be the K8P crowd. If your intent was to get more obscure characters showing up, this is not the way to do it. You're going to get stuff like the Duckling wizards and similar, which fine it's not nothing, but it's not "go see Mathilde's fief" (if you're into that) either.

Both, upsides and down sides, but, as a wizard the less awful ones like this one can help create new spells.

So more upside then downside as long as they aren't crippling.

That is exactly what I want. More Undumgi, more Halflings, more council members. The people who are near us.

My output is more a silver lining to various personal problems than any technique or cultivatable trait. A sense of purpose from keeping the quest going doesn't require cooperating neurotransmitters.
