Instructors are intended to teach a group that is to perform a given task to do that task better. If they get the idea that they're actually teaching instructors to share that instruction with non-authorized others, that will peeve them. Dwarves don't approve of their knowledge spreading anywhere they didn't explicitly intend it to, so they'd be deeply suspicious of the Colleges in general.
Is there an option to explicitly share some knowledge with college instructors for extra favor price, i.e. double or triple price?

Fair enough.
Though, it needs to be said, that's not how knowledge actually works.
Someone teaches me to make an axe, he also taught me some underlying blacksmith principles on how to make a sword or a mace, whether he intended it or not, and even if he would have strongly prefered it for me not to make swords.

There's a whole bunch of things that don't actually work the way Dwarves think they should. Most of them still don't consider reality a compelling argument to change their ways.

Would expatriates and exiles flock to the newly restored Karak Eight Peaks or would Mathilde basically have to search for them in the wide world if she wanted Dawi research collaborators?

I'm not sure what Dwarven lab assistants would bring to the table than an Apprentice wouldn't, and you get favour for those. They're blind to the thing you'd be researching.

@BoneyM With Thorek here to critique Kragg's work, isn't this even more of an opportunity to get absolute max quality gear?

Kragg doesn't do collaboration.

Also I'm wondering where Weber sees the future diplomatic relationships and internal tensions of this permanently mixed race dwarven Karak going. Especially given its key point on the trade routes. And wondering if the Grey College would be looking to have a permanent branch office here. Particularly to keep untrained future magically talented human offspring from souring relations with the dwarves

Karak Eight Peaks is off the edge of the map. Once it's stuck around long enough that it seems like it's permanent there'll be a lot of eyes turning this way, but for now it's still a grand experiment rather than a geopolitical reality.

Is there an option to explicitly share some knowledge with college instructors for extra favor price, i.e. double or triple price?

It can't be bought off-the-rack, it would need to be negotiated with the expert in question for whatever the topic would be.

Library of Valzag
Library of Valzag

The sound whirled hauntingly throughout the valley. Valzag squinted out from the shattered stone while the dagger like wind tried to scour his hide. Seeing the quickly moving metal bird dart through the valley made Valzag grit his teeth. Stunties. Green and brown phlegm dripped past his jagged jaw as the urge to throw rocks at the stunties crept into his thoughts. With a wordless bellow Valzag slammed his head into the rocks near him. Blood poured out of the wound and into his eyes but more importantly the thoughts about revealing himself slipped away. Valzag wiped blood and phlegm from his mouth and then stalked into the winding and dim caves of the mountain. The gyrobomber blissfully unaware of how close they were to Valzag and his ilk.

It was a walk of several minutes for Valzag before he stood before the slanted doors of his tribe. With great care Valzag opened the door. Before the door was halfway opened it sagged drunkenly towards Valzag. A bitter sigh whistled through his teeth as his fist struck the jagged rock next to him. He went to the side of the door to observe that only the bottom half of the door remained attached to rock. Careful searching revealed the warped pieces of metal that had failed to hold the door to rock. Valzag bones rattled under the force of his hum. How did the stunties and umies manage to keep their doors from falling? Finally Valzag stood up from his contemplations. In the end trying to keep doors from falling down were among the least of his projects. Ripping the door completely away from rock Valzag strode into the cave systems he had claimed by blood and iron.

The noise always became incredible as Valzag descended into his home. He shrugged off his plain brown robes and hung them with care next to a set of nearly identical robes. His was bigger but that was the only difference between it and the rest of those robes. As he turned back towards the noise and bustle of his tribe. His gaze travelled once again past the various ongoing experiments. In one opening an orc was carefully measuring the sizes of mushrooms and other fungus as he tried to determine why stunties and umies let some fields lie empty and grew food in other fields. The evidence showed that by carefully managing which plots were allowed to grow food the amount of food improved overall. Now they needed to figure out why.

In another opening Valzag eyes landed upon had been carved out for it's special purpose. It was a new experiment but already the knowledge gained would be incredibly helpful in food management. A variety of orcs were chained hands and feet to wall and fed different amounts soup out of bowls. The bowls had clear lines painted on them and notes were being taken on the very minimum amount of sustenance an orc needed to stay alive. Such knowledge would prove useful in making sure they didn't overfeed their prisoners in the future.

Striding out the smaller caverns and caves Valzag looked down upon the epicenter of his second greatest project. A great rift hidden from the world glowed red and orange. Forges of all sizes hammered metal into shape. Massive orcs swung crude hammers over and over pounding the metal before them. Goblins scurried to and fro hauling great bags of ore into the centre of the rift where other goblins hurriedly sorted the metal into new bags. Than more goblins carried the sorted ores over to the smithies. It was a massive effort and each ax blade, sword, or piece of armor were painstakingly made and compared with previous efforts.

To match the stunties or umies better weapons were needed. Valzag smiled at the effort his smiths were making. Hours and hours of backbreaking work was spent to try and make a stronger and sharper blade. Each success was cause for celebration. Each failure a reminder of how far the Strongest had yet to go.

Today though, Valzag would not stop at the smiths. He had even more important work to tend too. Striding up uneven steps Valzag entered a small cave with small braziers burning on either side of a slab of stone. On top of that slab was a massive leather bound tome. On the walls of the cave slender openings had been chiseled out and smaller tomes were placed carefully inside. Four rough desks lay beyond the great leather tome and four orcs kneeled in front of small tomes and struck the pages with small feathers dipped in ink. The markings they made onto the thin sheets of mushroom fiber would be baffling to anyone who lived outside of Valzag's might.

"Attend me." Valzag voice had the strength of a mountain when he spoke in the language he was forging. The four other orcs gently laid down their pens and stood attentively before Valzag and the great tome that rested before him.

"Zumuk, Motkig, Grigkaz, Voggac. Speak. What knowledge has been added to my great collection since last we spoke? What words shall I create to ease your burden? Speak and give your knowledge to each other and to me. Let the knowledge of the Strongest grow again."

As they spoke to him in The Tongue of Strength Valzar knew once more the greatness that he strove for. Soon the Strongest would no longer have to bear the shame of speaking a broken Weakling language. Soon all of the Strongest would be able to not only wage war in a tongue made for them but also record and use knowledge that would help them take a world that was rightfully theirs.

A.N.
So this is a plot bunny that would not leave me alone and with Belegar proving a radical I decided to write an orc radical. People have mentioned how an orc nagaverse would react to Mathilde completely screwing their massive piety project. This made me think about what other projects the orcs could be. I could only find the smallest of mentions of some kind of orc language so I came up with Valzag who has stacked learning just as high as his marital. Valzag is trying to create a uniform orcish language and writing system here.

Can I get you to switch claiming the ritual site and the King's armory for more time critical options? We are going to get to pick at least another three choices next update; we can pick up our stuff anytime, and no one is about to claim the temple, but our Amber Journeymanlings probably leave this turn.

You know, Belegar took Mathilde, a member of the Empire's premier institution of espionage and diplomacy into a meeting with the High King of the Dwarves which he must have known had a fair chance to be rocky. He then conspicuously hasn't asked for her discretion, and we know he's willing to use sneaky tactics.

I wonder if he wants to use Mathilde as a back channel back to the Empire. The dwarves are the Empire's most reliable and critical ally, so on a grand stage them committing suicide by grudge is a very bad thing for them. The prosperity, indeed the survival of Karak Eight Peaks is now the most powerful symbol of the dwarven people that hope is real, and that they can do more than burn themselves out resolving grudges.

Sure, many of the institutions of the Empire badly let him down, but the one that really, really didn't was the Colleges. Mathilde was MVP of the Expedition, and the Journeymanlings have generally kept their noses clean, not exploded, and generally been a credit to wizard-kind. Sure, they were all nominally semi-autonomous agents, but they were agents that the Colleges made available, when they could have been sent elsewhere.

Even though Karak Eight Peaks has moved more towards consolidation, he still needs a continual influx of men to take the casualties that the dwarves can't afford to. Far better for his clans to focus on mining and crafting and starting the centuries long process of rebuilding their numbers while men do the ugly business of dying.

His lack of indigenous Rune Smith presence also means that he has a continuing need for Imperial Magisters to act as support.

In conclusion, Karak Eight Peaks could really do with continuing support from the Colleges and the broader Empire. If Mathilde reports on what happened at Karaz-a-Karak her College has enough perspective to know the value of giving that support. If not from the Grey College, but from the Bright or the Jade.

This suggests a future of investigation and study at Karak Eight Peaks, and perhaps helping Johann poke at Skaven technology.

These three are time critical in relation with the two, maybe by talking with them she can keep in contact, or they can rejoined the knights later.

So, it's 100gp per Extensive collection.

I know where a lot of our money will be going...

Greenskin Lore
Skaven Lore
8 x Collegiate Runecraft Lore
8 x Collegiate Enchanting Lore
Alchemy
Dwarf Lore in general
Dwarf History
Dwarf Geography
Dwarf Economics
Etc, etc.

It gets very expensive before two long. Having a very good library collection helps justify Collegiate chapter houses status though.

We should also investigate whether we can commission a merchant to look out for interesting books in Barak Varr. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't at least a Grey ex-perpetual apprentice living there as an agent, and there's probably a Grey Magister. We may not be given their contact information, but even if not we should look for a factor.

Ultimately, what we want to line up is a coherent narrative here, and most importantly, I want to see a couple more good scenes with the Journeymanlings before we disperse a bit. Initially, I was more interested in setting up the Ranald Shrine here... But on further consideration, I think it might be better to wait until we're finishing up the Epilogue, to give it a nice bit of punchiness as we give homage to the god who bailed us right the fuck out of the time we were probably at greatest risk to life and limb. I'm still approval voting it just in case though. If we can somehow work out some kind of deal with them (And if they're intelligent enough to make one, and lacking in hate for that matter), we might manage to get access to spider silk--which is probably going to have excellent applications for enchantment.

At least trying to see if something can be worked out seems to be worth a shot, you know? And I don't want to completely ignore the interior of Eight Peaks just because Mathilde's peacetime efforts are better suited as a fast rider and an weaver if information webs.

Beyond that? We need to put our heads together with our Journeymanlings and codify what we've learned. We have been witnesses to some rare and ancient magics in the course of this Expedition--and have plenty of intriguing insights to offer as well. The first witnesses of an Anvil of Doom wielded by a Runelord in the history of the Empire who could actually understand what the fuck was going on, and Mathilde had a prime view of the events. The Colleges would kill for that information, even setting aside the insights on bullying Waaaghs! that we've got to add, plus anything else the other Journeymanlings have noticed in the confusion. We need to do this, and this is the last time we can be certain we'll have everyone together to work it out with.

Hell, it might encourage the Colleges to send us more journeymanlings, and we have a rare and precious opportunity here to fill a power vacuum with a traditional ally of the Empire. Belegar's chronic Runepriest shortage isn't going to go away after that little kerfuffle in the Everpeak, and with the performance of Mathilde and her group, he's going to be a lot less twitchy about Umgi Mhornokri then literaly any other dwarf ruler would be. Colleges of Wizardry can lean on the ancient alliance to justify further investments to the rest of the Empire--and Eight Peaks is liable to become a hotspot for Journeymen to get peak level experience--and Magisters to do some seriously hardcore research if we go full ham enough on blinging out our Tower. This likely gives us a good shot at Wizard Lord before Mathilde is in her 40s, and who knows? We might even meet a new husbando in a similiar line of work in the process!

And finally, we should introduce ourselves to the newcomers of note--we've got the advantage of reputation, and there's no sense not answering questions, introducing ourselves, and minimizing the friction involved either. We're strange and new to these new guys, but we're going to be working together in the days ahead--if not necessarily in the same field. Making sure we've made a good impression will be key.

Next turn, I think, we're going to want to touch base back in Stirland for a while, to pick up our research subjects and hang out with our old friends (And also let them know of the fuckton of dwarfen silver that's about to enter their economy like the fist of god so that Wilhelmina can work something out to keep their economy from suffering ruinous inflation), and then our last action to be setting up the Ranald Shrine when we return to Eight Peaks, since we'll have had a chance to get our neat stuff from our estate while we're up there, and we want our nice trinkets to decorate our place of worship you know?

This is an excellent time to invest to invest here, should be very profitable and accelerate KEPs development, making it much safer.

[ ] Karag Nar penthouse
The first possibility that leaps to mind is the uppermost dwelling of Karag Nar, with a beautiful 360-degree view and a commanding position. The Black Orc Warboss' reasons for taking it for his own are obvious, and though it will take some time and effort to clear out the possessions that hadn't been safely stowed in the King's Armoury, it is bursting with potential and would allow you to keep a careful eye on the Undumgi and Death Pass.

It's a very nice place, but perhaps... too nice. Would be much more appropriate to the Karaks Mayor or something I think, and it would not be even remotely hidden. Also, any spectacular magical failures of ours would be rather visible, which would be... bad. Let's go somewhere more out of the way instead.

[ ] Karag Lhune secondary peak
The second possibility is the secondary peak of Karag Lhune that the greenskins positioned their Doom Diver battery atop. The landing pad atop it was made redundant thousands of years ago when a full hangar was built atop Karag Lhune, and it's just as redundant for modern gyrocopters as it was to ancient airships so it would be yours for the taking. The storerooms below offer plenty of room for expansion and you'd be conveniently close to the heart of the resurgent Karak.

Karak Lhune is the dwarf one, Nar is the one given to trade and humans. Lets not set up a mage tower on top of a dwarf filled Karak please? Dwarfs wouldn't like that thought they might allow it, and they are bros.

[ ] Citadel Tower
Third, the Citadel is being repaired of the damage that Kragg and cannon dealt to it, as well as three thousand years of neglect, and though the two towers were once a key part of its defensibility, with the only enemy approach being within the caldera that height advantage should no longer be needed. It makes for a much more traditional Wizard's Tower than one in a mountain peak, and though it's currently part of the defensive line against the untaken parts of the Karak, that also means that there'll always be plenty of protectors on hand, and perhaps you'd like to be able to help repulse any attackers.

We are not a battle wizard to make full use of this, and performing magical experiments in a so vital defensive position, that could result in suddenly: daemons, or exploding into district devouring shadows does not seems wise to me.

[ ] Karag Nar temple
Your previous 'tower' was nothing of the sort, and perhaps you wish to continue that trend. If so, the site of you and Ranald triumphing over Gork and Mork would certainly be equally auspicious. It's a convenient distance from the population centers of the Karag and has a nearby side-entrance you could properly conceal and keep for your own use. (note: if you don't choose this as a tower, you can still use it in the future for a shrine or some other purpose. Nobody but you, Belegar, and Kragg know its significance, and everyone else just sees it as a former greenskin temple an inconvenient distance from the rest of the Karag.)

Definitely an option, though the place would be far more appropriate as a shrine to Ranald I believe.

[ ] The Grand Abyss
If you value secrecy over all else, you could go just as far down as you can up. Deep below Karag Lhune lies the Lhune Deeps, and below that is the Grand Abyss. The Dwarves never were able to plumb the extent of its depths, and that is somewhat concerning, but it would certainly be impressive to have a tower built atop a bottomless pit.

Well. Might have some synergy with Ulgu maybe? Not sure. If we go with interior intrigue it might synergize too. Otherwise, seems like a somewhat foolish showing off. Definitely safely out of the way though, if something goes wrong. A decent option I think.

[ ] Und-Uzgar
Soon to be an outpost for the Undumgi, Und-Uzgar was the site of your shadow becoming outputtingly independent. Built into the side of Karag Lhune, it boasts a commanding view of Death Pass and the passage to the rest of the Karag will be excavated any day now.

A decent option, though it having such a good view means that it should be a pretty visible spot in case of oops. I like that it is the side of a place where we got an Arcane Mark, should be a constant reminder to remain careful and humble.

[ ] Eastern Valley tower
Though it's soon to be filled with Halfling fields and cottages, they'd be happy for you to become their neighbour, and if you want to start from scratch you certainly have enough wealth and favours accumulated to build a tower of your own.

Meh. Halflings are good people, but we would be starting from scratch for no reason.

[ ] The Silver Tower
Legends of the Silver Tower have been told and retold a thousand times over - the place where plucky adventurers caused the downfall of the Gaunt Summoner. You're not entirely sure if this is the same Silver Tower, but you could make a claim on it even though it is built upon the as-yet unreclaimed Karagril.

Hubris. Lets not.

[X] There's a growing concentration of royalty here. Get to know King Kazador, and this 'Sky-Thane' Prince Gotri.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with foreign relations, as a Spymaster focused on threats outside the Karak.

I don't like what it suggests, but I want to read more about those people...

[X] Scout the rest of the Eight Peaks, to find out what other horrors are waiting out there.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with its reconquest, as a Spymaster focused on threats within the Karak.

I maintain that we are extremely well suited for this, it needs to be done and external intrigue would be a waste of our talents. It's also fun.

[X] Convince Esbern and Seija to stay long enough to deal with the spiders in the Chiselwards.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with its reconquest, as a Spymaster focused on threats within the Karak.

Spiders need dealing with, and Beast mages are very well suited for that indeed.

[X] Claim the site where Ranald mugged Mork and build a shrine to Ranald there.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks, as leader of the Undumgi and point of contact for the Ulricans.

Not a big fan of being a mayor, but that place is just perfect for a shrine to Ranald.

[] King Belegar is allowing you to use the King's Armoury. Recover your extant study materials from Stirland and tuck them away safely in there.
This suggests a future catching up on your pre-existing study topics.

That-which-shall-not-be-spoken-of would be utterly safe in there. That said, spending an action on that, when our other study materials dont need such security, does not seem wise. Not to mention if we choose to study it, while we are doing it it would be outside of the vault and discoverable to people snooping around... we could also probably ask Belebro to keep just the box in there separately for less of a cost. Overall, not sure, but probably not.

[] Convince Esbern and Seija to stay long enough to hatch the supposedly Lustrian eggs and study and possibly train whatever hatches.
This suggests a future catching up on your pre-existing study topics.

Not quite sure here either. What would we even do with those beasts? And eggs are far easier to transport that baby monsters. Getting the eggs identified and selling them to the Imperial Zoo or the beast mages seems like a much better idea.

[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.
This suggests a future in Stirland, whether Roswita likes it or not.

I am not a fan of returning there full time, but visiting our friends, taking a look at our investments and assets, and maybe help out from time to time I fully support.

[ ] You're going to have a rough time explaining your windfall to the Bursars. Better to get that over with.
This suggests a future performing an assignment the Grey Order thinks is suited to you.

I like the suggests part, but meh on the option itself. Not urgent. I would fully support donating most of the gold to schools, healers, and orphanages anyway.

Edit: Convinced by Alectais post above.

The conflict with the High King is very interesting. I think that I'm glad that it happened. It shows that Belebro is rather firmly on the side of growth and prosperity for his people rather than self destructive vengeance. This is good for the survival of dwarf-kind, and all that are sane.

I like to think that the High King approves, but can't really say that out loud because politics.

A bit sad about not seeing what the grudges we have helped resolve would be worth though. As for the lack of a reward for them or the inability to spend favour Karaz-A-Karak, meh. We can do without. Worth it.

Aaahhh I can't pick. I think working on the papers and trying to make sure Esbern and Seija remain is going to be important. Introducing ourselves to dwarven kings is also very useful. However with several temples to other gods being set up, I want to make sure that Ranald isn't too late to the game.

EDIT: Removed meet and greet for royalty. They aren't going anywhere and we can always introduce ourselves to them later.

A bit of devil-advocating: I doubt that Belegar would be lacking in runepriests in short or medium term, courtesy of Karak Azul. Karak Azul boasts the second-best runelord, and the said runelord, unlike Kragg, intensely cares about proliferation of runecraft (technology is unnecessary! Me and guys will solve the same problems with runes, no problem!) and absolutely does take apprentices - so, Karak Azul should have an abnormally high amount of runepriests, and with king Kazador throwing all the support he can get behind k8p (for obvious reasons), the runepriest issue should be solved until for quite some time. Hell, given that a significant part of Karak Azul throng is composed from k8p descendents who are settling here, Belegar might be getting a runepriest or two of his own.

I agree on the rest of points, though.

It does mean that we're a lot more likely to get to do some collaboration though, and we want as many Winds as we can for that.

Anyway, time to go to sleep for a while, I'll be back around noonish I guess.

Well we definitely need to get some college favours then so we can throw some into grabbing books

I'm agreed with pretty much all of this.

Well if we stay I sort of like the idea that within K8P there will eventually be Eight wizard towers for eight magisters, one from each college.

[X] This is Dawongr Weber's money. The funds will largely go projects within the Karaz Ankor - your tower for one, but also investing in the Undumgi or Ulrikadrin, or purchasing goods made by Dwarven artisans or sold in the markets of Barak Varr.
[X] Karag Nar penthouse
[X] There's a growing concentration of royalty here. Get to know King Kazador, and this 'Sky-Thane' Prince Gotri.
[X] Convince Esbern and Seija to stay long enough to deal with the spiders in the Chiselwards.
[X] Claim the site where Ranald mugged Mork and build a shrine to Ranald there.
[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.

At least trying to see if something can be worked out seems to be worth a shot, you know? And I don't want to completely ignore the interior of Eight Peaks just because Mathilde's peacetime efforts are better suited as a fast rider and an weaver if information webs.

I actually disagree with the last bits. Mathilde's very high martial makes her ideal for engaging in sabotage and assassination campaigns, and so does her spells and spell masteries. She's a poor diplomat and the needs of a dwarven hold are very different to that of a human province. Karak Eight Peaks' nearest neighbours are skaven clans and Greenskin tribes. They're in great need of a little dose of Mathilde brand destruction.

This is why I actually would be willing to spend a decent amount of Favours on a decent dwarven weapon. I don't know what Kragg would 'charge' for his S10 rune, but with it so many sabotage tactics open up. You don't need bombs at that poiny. Combine it with the Night Prowler's face of the coin and she'd be incredibly effective. Add on Substance of Shadow to avoid collateral damage...

The kinds of things that come from the combination of abilities and artifacts are very unusual and very hard to replicate. Now Karak Eight Peaks is part of the gyrocopter network, Mathilde's speed, as she's just seen, is largely redundant. That was all based on just one mastered spell. Sabotage is helped by that spell, but her other capabilities are much more appropriate for more aggressive action.

[X] This is tomorrow's problem. Let the money sit in the King's Armoury for now. Once you've decided what your future will be, then you can decide what to do with the money.

[X] King Belegar is allowing you to use the King's Armoury. Recover your extant study materials from Stirland and tuck them away safely in there.

I really hope the spiders in the Chiselwards win enough votes since I feel there's a time limit for dealing with the spiders, if they haven't attacked then there's a higher chance of bringing them to dwarf side since we yet to mistreat them unlike the goblins.
If we leave it for later, Esbern and Seija would become food by the time we did it.
I for one looking forward to seeing Dwarfs or halflings riding spider cavalry if they're strong enough or used them as ambush units for the skaven in the deep.
The eggs can wait.

A lot. The Karaz Ankor is blissfully unaware of the tidal wave of royal singles currently on its way down the Blood River.
ahem
I see an opportunity here, remember that network of romance novel?
We should definitely play a matchmaker, thus gaining more romance novels I mean semi formal information network that Mathilde can utilize later.

and we should advertise it by saying "Find HANDSOME and DASHING Dwarven Noble singles here" via MAP
