And that's why we will use Spellsurge and learn Merciful Spell before departing. So we can cast Mericful Firebrands and, if necessary, normal ones on everything around as soon as we arrive.

Merciful, Searing, Agonising Firebrand

Accept no substitutes.
I kind of fear that pushing that onto every target will kill off most sacrifices simply though nonlethal damage overload :/

Everything bigger than a horse should be fine, though.
Hopefully.

Also, everyone, Irony's breath can be pushed to even further levels of bullshit for 2-3 uses if we use bloodwish on him just before teleporting.

I've updated my Sothoryos preparation plan to account for the assumption that we will immediately be going into combat against an army of spiders (still keeping Irony bottled for transport @Duesal).

Added in having Viserys learn Merciful Spell and casting Arcane Spellsurge right before we leave, @TotallyNotEvil.

I think I've touched on everything relevant, unless ya'll see something I've left out?

The other thing is that against spiders, the Companions are flat out unnecessary. The priority is capturing, not killing. We could go in with just Viserys and Irony and still come out with our mission accomplished.
There is a realistic chance of CR-appropriate threats.

Don't think of this like a hunting trip in the modern sense.
DP long ago warned us that Sothyros is dangerous as fuck, never optimize for capture against real dangers.

Your mission, should you accept it is
Blood for the Old Gods!
Skulls for the collection!
Ehm. Ups. Yes, hero, there was that.
That just needs some context, and then, we can summon some Astral Devas for support?

Edit: Acutally, are there some combat-heavy outsiders available from Yss' home plane? I assume he has one, judging by Vee's dream?

So, I have been thinking lately...

Does anybody know a way for us to apply "fiendish" template to any of our hydras?

Constant source of fiendish blood for forging Valyrian steel and making magebane poison.

Part MMCXCVIII: The Guiding Flame
The Guiding Flame

Seventeenth Day of the Fourth Month 293 AC

Though wary of speaking too much lest the lady in Saan's arms should prove unreliable, you answer his concerns forthrightly: "The Basilisk Isles are a strategic location for me. Close to Sothoryos and far away from any other power which could reasonably stop us from taking them. This is not a foolish attempt to take whatever is in reach, but an investment. Trade will flow between Sothoryos and Essos in time, making the man controlling such strategic ports rich as sin and courted by all from Braavos to Volantis. And his raiding fleets feared from Slavers Bay to Yi-Ti."

The pirate lord looks at you in askance: "You mean to raise cities out of the jungle, on the far shore? Hot though a dragon's fire may burn, I am not sure it is hot enough to burn those sodden lands bare. It is bad enough to come ashore on the isles where the sea might keep painted lizards, brindled men, and strange plagues at bay, but not hardly one ship of every two that makes shore on Sothoryos returns to port, and its not that sea that takes most of them to hear sailors talk."

"Cities have been built there before, a thousand ruins scattered across the shore from Gogossos to Gorash. Were they greater men than us to raise those stones, lord Saan?" you answer with a question of your own.

The old pirate opens his mouth to answer with passion, then thinks the better of it, giving a rumbling laugh. "You'd almost rouse a corpse to sail out talking like that, but I'll need more than that to raise worthy havens for trade and raiding both."

"Worry not, I will have a vested interest in seeing such ports built, ships and crews brought to the islands, and ample work supplied for the taxmen. Wealth and men will flow as soon as the first island is taken," you answer, secretly admiring the streak of stubborn practicality so at odds with his flamboyant dress. "For my part I shall be quite content with my small cut that the taxmen will bring and the knowledge that there are strong ports and fast ships to enforce my will upon these seas."

"Music to my ears, Your Grace," Saan assures you with a wide bright smile.

"That music wouldn't happen to sound like coins jingling, would it?" you ask, matching the expression if in a somewhat more restrained manner.

"Now that you mention it, mayhap it does," he laughs.

"Go then," you command. "Bring me those islands, Salladhor, and I will turn them into something that lords and ladies the world over will envy you for."

To your somewhat amused surprise he bows with a flourish worthy of the Triarchs' Court in Volantis. "At once, Your Grace." Then his gaze slips sideways to his companions and amends. "In an hour... no, make that two."

You leave, a wry smile still on your face, closing the cabin door firmly behind you.

***

On your way to meet the others you almost forget your new-made grimoire for it is still strange that you would posses such a thing, some unruly fragment of draconic pride rebelling against its very existence even as you pick up the slim leather bound, gold-clasped tome wrought of Lya's deeper studies into the arcane. No mere notebook of seals and rituals from which your eyes slip like water off oiled leather, but words of power inked in your own blood, all but searing the parchment upon which they were set with the weigh sorcery within. The irony of most of the arcane witting within the book's pages being enchantments that keep it from falling to ashes does not escape you.

Thus you arrive back in the keep's great hall, Ser Richard, Bronn, Malarys, and Vee are already there, the girl already holding a vial, swirling with faintly glowing red mist, the gorgon bull ready to harvest. Xor floats in a few minutes later, looking quite incongruous with all manner of supplies strapped to himself 'just in case they should be needed'.

Maelor and a rather harried-looking Dany arrive late. "Sorry... It wasn't easy convincing Embra that she shouldn't come with us and should keep to exploring safer places until she gets her footing," she explains.

"Maybe you should let her come then," Bronn speaks up. "Noble girl or o she's got some magic right? What's the worst that could happen?"

"War the likes of which the world has not seen in ages beyond knowing," Malarys announces making no attempt to hide his annoyance at the sellsword's nonchalance.

"Let's just be off before she has another change of heart," you interject before the conversation can get out of hand.

[] Write in preparations for the journey

OOC: I was about two paragraphs into the fight when I realized I did not give you guys time to vote for preparations, which would have been a major oversight in terms of questing since I need to know what tools the expedition will have to handle any problems thrown at it.

Flesh-Forge. Though I think some regular SCIENCE could do it too. Maybe a mix of grafting fiend parts to it and infusing it with raw Evil? If it works, we could make a Lawful and a Chaotic version for Magebane production.

@Duesal, at a few Lemures and Dretches to the shopping list. We might be able to incubate a templated Hydra in their bodies.

Abyssal Vermin comes to mind. Only works on Vermin and is temporary, though. Vile Death works on Undead, but again that wouldn't work. It does show, however, that it should require and 8th or 9th level spell to apply the Fiendish template to anything, and even then there would be a significant cost.

[X] Sothoryos Expedition Preparations
-[X] Ask Yss what, if any, unexpected dangers the expedition is likely to encounter.
-[X] Malarys will prepare a specialized spell loadout with Sothoryos in mind. It can be found here.
-[X] Bronn will be retrieved from his mission with the Dothraki and asked to accompany those going on the Sothoryos Expedition.
-[X] Before departing Sorcerer's Deep, Vee will cast an Heroes' Feat spell (using two 5th level spell slots), which Viserys, all of the Companions, Bronn, and Teana will attend.
-[X] The group will carry more than enough Alchemical Vermin Repellent to protect everyone for the full duration of the expedition and sufficient Elysium Fruit to cure fatigue throughout the expedition, with more in reserve should it prove necessary. They will each carry a dozen vials of Alchemist's Fire, should it prove necessary to engage in wide-scale deforestation or extermination of local wildlife.
-[X] Richard will lend the expedition group staying behind in Sothoryos his Corpse-Ferrying Bag, they will be issued a pair of Sending Stones to supplement the bags of attuned obsidian sand they will each carry, and Lya will lend them the following spell scrolls: Comprehend Languages(x4), Cure Light Wounds(x10), Keen Edge(x1), Lesser Restoration(x2), Panacea(x4), Plane Shift(x1), Restoration(x1), and Teleport(x1). They will also carry the magic bedroll with them for emergency spell recovery.
-[X] Immediately prior to departure (NOTE: Irony is included in all buffs not placed on specific people);
--[X] Lya will place Irony in a Smoky Confinement bottle for easy transport after he is buffed. She casts and maintains Harmonic Chorus on herself, then uses Mass Aid, Moment of Greatness, and Life Bubble on each member of the expedition, uses her Overland Flight spell-like ability on Richard, Bronn, and Malarys, casts Fly on Vee, Dany, Irony, and Viserys, Barkskin on Bronn, Viserys, and Richard, Shield of Faith on Bronn, Richard, and Maelor, Greater Shadow Enchantment to place a Grand Destiny spell on Viserys, and Owl's Insight on Dany, Malarys, and Vee.
--[X] Tyene will place a Nondetection and Blindsight spell on each member of the expedition, while Waymar places Resist Energy(Acid) and Resist Energy(Fire) on them. For Viserys, he uses Resist Energy(Cold) rather than Resist Energy(Fire).
--[X] Vee casts Barkskin on herself, Irony, Dany, and Malarys, Shield of Warding on Richard's shield, Shield of Faith on herself and Irony, and Tyche's Touch on Irony, then casts Invisibility Purge.
--[X] Maelor casts Shield and Child of the Dark on himself.
--[X] Dany casts Repel Vermin, Entropic Shield, Shield of Faith, Sign, and True Seeing on herself, then Greater Magic Fang on Viserys.
---[X] In preparation for her part of the expedition, Dany is using her Half-Celestial form and will have prepared a 4th level Repel Vermin spell in place of Dismissal and a 3rd level Control Vermin spell in place of Nauseating Breath.
--[X] Malarys casts Defending Bone, Magic Circle Against Chaos, Repel Vermin, Entropic Shield, Shield of Faith, Sign, Stone Body, and True Seeing on himself. He places a Bear's Endurance spell on Irony just before he is bottled.
--[X] Viserys takes on his True Dragon form, casts Heart of Water (using his PoSK), Mirror Images, Scintillating Scales, Shield, and Ancestral Awakening to learn the Merciful Spell Metamagic feat.
--[X] Once everyone leaving for the expedition is properly buffed, they will ascend no less than 300 feet into the air, where Viserys will cast Arcane Spellsurge before using the power granted to him by Yss to Teleport everyone to Sothoryos.
-[X] Immediately upon arrival in Sothoryos, Irony will be freed from his bottle and released into Vee's care.

Will do. The Listener and Uniila should be perfectly able to cough up all the Names.
