So, reading that thread on the Victoria novel Darkseid was reading to Lynn. Wow, that might have been as traumatizing as Darkseid himself (probably not, but wow). I can't imagine what Darkseid himself thought of that horrifying offensive mess. (Not that I expect it to traumatize him or something.)

My guess is he realized that he had an even better candidate for new god of being completely useless than Vermin Vundabar.

Because I'm already on page 36 of the thread about Victoria, and just when you think the author couldn't be any more of a useless idiot, more stuff comes up.

But Doomsday originated from the scientist Bertron doing a bullshit evolution experiment on the most dangerous planet in the universe, prehistoric Krypton. Doomsday originated from the remains of the being killed over and over to force evolve over whatever killed it.

The Genemorphs are based on the species that Doomsday started off as, before over thirty years of daily genetic manipulation.

Since that can be over 10,000 genetic alterations, Doomsday and the species he started off as are probably not that similar at all.

But since it was mentioned in Stars, Crossed that the Justice Lords Superman had absorbed the mantle of Tyranny after killing that version of Darkseid, it seems plausible that Renegade (with a New God soul, taking the name, and doing a fair job of living up to the job description), may actually be stealing the mantle of 'God of Conquest' from the original Grayven.

Uhm no. It was theorized by some fans that Justice Lord Superman absorbed Darkseid's mantle, despite the fact that is not how deities work in DC comics (pre-New 52), which Zoat shot down by again reminding people that kryptonians are explicitly not compatible with new god apotheosis in this story.

Actually it was shown to work exactly like that in Kingdom Come pre new 52, and two re kryptonians and mantles , is that a story wide thing or just an in 16r thing. Because it has been shown in story that somethings work differently in different parts of the multiverse.

The thought occurred to me rather blatantly when I read that, but I had assumed you meant "human technology can't fit a weapon".
A small needle coated with a neurotoxin could pop up when a button is pushed. Nothing like an energy weapon, but decent against anyone who can be hurt by it.

I mean when is Paul going to be hit with laser-guided karma for his fuckups? In a way that will actually personally affect him, or maybe even change him from the stasis he's been in since at least Dr Fate?
Alerting Larfleeze to his presence? Merging with the Ophidian was a pretty bad idea even if it mostly turned out fine. Zoat has mentioned that his relationship with Batman will deteriorate at some point in the future.
That's not how a base shield work, it's meant to work in space regardless of the lantern mental state.
I think it still depends on the Lantern's mental state, but that it requires such low amount of emotion that it can function while they are asleep.
i dunno. ill freely admit im fairly ignorant about the New Gods, but wouldn't Granny Goodness be PATHETICALLY weak (by NG standards), due to her very domain/mantle, against anyone capable of FIGHTING BACK at all?

err, unless ive completely misread everything everyone's said about her in the threads both here and on SB
the feeling i got from the stuff ive seen posted, is she's minmaxed to be optimal at hurting individuals who explicitly are incapable of fighting back.... like, she'd be literally useless if there's an actual fight, whereas someone who's, say, incapacitated by blood loss, missing their sword/weapon arm...

( i interpreted the "New God of Child Abuse" thing as meaning ALL of her abilities, powers and talents, mundane and related to her awakened nature, being COMPLETELY focused on kids/ the "defenceless". is it REALLY that bad i just find the thought of someone so dreaded getting effortlessly flattened by a B-grade fighter hilarious? )
She abuses gods. Young gods, but gods. She has to have some form of resiliency to not have died to an assassination years ago.
This is one of my favorite aspects of With This Ring, actually.

Comic books are fantastic, silly, epic, grandiose, and feature world-ending catastrophes on a daily basis. Superheroes are heroes in that they are people who do good in exceptional ways, but they are also classical heroes, men and women whose passions and motivations and battles are epic and larger than life.

With This Ring subverts this by dropping an ordinary person with extraordinary power into this world. Paul is not given to dramatics. He has no secret identity or mysterious second life. He treats being a comic book superhero given incredible cosmic power as a day-job. His plans are long term, are advanced through consensus-building rather than Mad Science or secret conspiracies, progress incrementally, and rarely feature moments of high drama.

He fights like a police officer, not a comic book hero. When faced with a threat, a policeman calls for backup. A policeman's goal is not revenge, or world peace, but rather a quotidian desire to keep their community safe and at peace. His fights often involve him just curb-stomping the enemy, in large part due to his well thought out preparations. He has no pride in these fights, no ego at stake, no need for revenge, no urge to arrogantly show off, but instead seeks only to wrap things up cleanly and smoothly, with a minimum of fuss.

Grayven visits Lex by appearing outside his window; Paul surprises Lex by choosing instead to take the elevator. After shooting down all those missiles, Paul relaxes and rocks out to K-pop. He's upset about killing that clay guy, as anyone would be, but he gets over it. When handed Infinite Cosmic Power by the embodiment of Avarice, we learn that his greatest desires are... redesigning his favorite game, giving everyone a taste of his cooking, protecting his friends, making the solar system prettier, changing the spelling of the Happy Harbor to be something he's more familiar with, and a laundry list of other things, all of which directly impact his personal life in some minor but understandable way.

With This Ring is set in a comic book universe, but don't be fooled; this story is not a comic book story, but is instead a subversion of the super hero genre as a whole. Despite being an extraordinary character interacting with an extraordinary world, and despite the fact that Paul possesses a genuinely inhuman mindset, he is, at his core, the only truly normal person in this world. And that's a large part of what I find interesting about this story.
Well said.

Well, what a "surprise". Father box has been reporting back to Darkseid. You know what I find particularly satisfying about this revelation?

Guess who got thread banned earlier, and would almost certainly be gloating to Vega and back about this...
That's like shootting at a targeting range all day with a shotgun and then bragging that you hit the bullseye. True, but kinda missing the point.
But just like Greed is actually closer to Want, could the "life" of the White Light be more metaphorical than literal? Life being the harmonic culmination of every other emotion, instead of the soulfull existence that makes them possible. And in that case "Death" would be more like emotional death, or Depression, which would match it's depiction here fairly well.
I think this is already got it works.
I don't know if anyone's answered this yet, but Darkseid exudes Anti-Life: just being around him slowly subjects you to His will.
Remind me, you started this when everyone was saying President Wilson was dead right?
Darkseid mostly just has joker immunity going for him.

Superman and Martian Manhunter have both killed him in the comics, and there are entire planets worth of beings with the exact same powers flying around the DC universe
I think that's wanking Superman and MM rather than any weakness of Darkseid's.
The colored quotes don't mean enlightenment. It means that the individual's connection to that part of the emotional spectrum is strong enough to leak out into their speech. Darkseid is the defining example of someone whose connection to the black light of unlife can be carried through his words.
Zoat mentioned a little while ago that he only has so many choices when showing 'altered' speech with an emotional component.

Actually it was shown to work exactly like that in kingdom come, and 2 is that a story wide thing or just an in 16r thing. Because it was shown in story that something work differently in different parts of the multiverse.

Kingdom Come showed nothing of the sort.

It shows is that Orion grew to be like his father.

That requires absolutely no metaphysical mumbo jumbo whatsoever.

People develop to be like their parents all the damn time without magic, it's called heredity.

In the Kingdom Come novelization, the narrator specifically says that Orion's predicament is social. That Orion is like Moses, but not as smart. Moses led his people to wander in the desert so that the next generation grew up free. Orion didn't do that, so he freed Apokalips, only for them to technically be free while still thinking like slaves.

Which is backed up in Kingdom Come itself. "Apokalips is still helpless with those who cannot...will not...help themselves."

Plus the fact that in Kingdom Come Barda and Scott are openly trying to teach the lowlies to be free. "You must first unlock your minds! When you reach out and touch freedom you stand as tall as Orion! He fears you for you can dream of things beyond him!"

Also Orion's offer to take up any of the metahumans who are too much of a threat to Earth because "They couldn't possibly be any more challenging to me than my own subjects."

Kingdom Come doesn't show an Orion who magically became his own father, it shows an Orion who tried to free Apokalips but wasn't smart enough to actually do the job and is stuck giving orders because the people refuse to think for themselves and so he's sacrificing his own happiness to try to manage the situation, praying for the day that he can walk away from all that.

Anyway, the idea that Zoat would ignore both the comic books and how things work in the myths to borrow how divinity works in Dungeons and Dragons, even though Zoat gives not the slightest crap about dungeons and dragons, is a bizarre theory.

Father is, in every one of these quotes, being used as a proper noun and should be capitalized.
Thank you, corrected.
Most of us (and Renegade) feel that Darkseid knows he's not the real Grayven. But since it was mentioned in Stars, Crossed that the Justice Lords Superman had absorbed the mantle of Tyranny after killing that version of Darkseid
No it wasn't.
Zoat, not sure if this has been said, but was it planned to have the "reveal" that Father Box was betraying him on the Ides of March or was that just coincidence?
Coincidence, I'm afraid.

The crowd fills the forum of Themyscira City completely, not just overflowing into the surrounding streets but leaning out of the windows of the surrounding houses. Due to the clement climate and their limited technology, Themyscira started using glass for windows only since Diana returned from America the first time. Most houses just make do with shutters, which are being pushed aside so that the residents… And probably their friends, neighbours and.. just whoever shows up can either lean out or climb up onto the roofs.

All watching as my fraction-of-real-size hologram of Kon slams into Oceanus' helmet.

There's a gasp, and a pushing in the crowd as Oceanus collapses 'towards' them, calming only as the image loses integrity before hitting them. Guy's shield is still in place, though I'm depicting him with Ion floating just behind him as the truth doesn't really suit a visual medium. The image of me then flies down into the steam, Diana and Kal-El shortly behind me. The image then dissolves, switching to me flying Kon out to safety.

Yes, by Amazon standards the image presented is a fairly homoerotic one, but I hope that they'll overlook-.

Kon cringes slightly as the crowd turn towards us, cheering and-. I blink as I'm hit in the face by a shawl. What? Oh, right. Throwing clothes at performers is how Greeks show approval. They're clapping too, the applause echoing off the walls of the buildings until it sounds like it's coming from all directions.

Or perhaps it genuinely is.

"Sisters!" Queen Hippolyta is standing on a construct platform just ahead of me, her arms raised to focus her countrywomen's attention. "You have witnessed the valour of my grandson this day! He won the highest blessing of Helios and used it to defeat a Titan, the ancient foes of the Olympians!"

That's not quite how it works, and from the slight wince on Donna's face I know that I'm not the only one aware of that. Diana takes that as the signal to hug Kon from behind, making him cringe more.

"Can there still be any doubt that he is worthy of his title?!"

"No!"

The crowd don't quite cry that out as one, but it's not far off.

"Do you agree then, that we should amend our law and allow this man, this hero, into the line of succession?!"

"Yes!"

Queen Hippolyta smiles, and I… Well, that's one way to do it. Public holograms are something Diana never tried to introduce and they're far more immediate than word of mouth or plays. Kon doesn't seem to care one way or another, but I know that Diana and Queen Hippolyta regard this as one way to help my… Social engineering project. Give the Amazons male heroes.

Donna sidles over to me as Kon is shoved towards the front of the floating platform. "You could have come and got me, you know? I might have been able to talk him down."

"Diana tried. And, we're still not sure whether Orm was influencing him or not. You're not… Quite as tough as Diana. The lightning bolts she took might have killed you." She looks a little dubious. "Yes, it was something we could have tried and yes, it might have worked. But I'm afraid that I'm… A little less hesitant to use lethal force than an ideal superhero would be, when the aggressor is as dangerous as he is. If you want, I can give you a lift to Porto Santo. The magic holding Oceanus inside isn't absolute; you could probably still talk to him."

"Thank you. I think I should try, at least."

"Um…" Oratory might have been a common skill amongst Ancient Greek political leaders, but Kon wasn't programmed with much in the way of public speaking skill and hasn't taken the time to learn it. I'm… Not sure that Queen Hippolyta has realised that. He takes a look at the crowd, his admirers and countrywomen gazing up at him and waiting for him to speak. I make momentary eye contact with the faintly scowling Clyemne and smile at her. "Thank you? I-." He glances back at Diana, who smiles reassuringly. "A.. little under a year ago, I got my first glimpse of the world outside of the pod where Cadmus grew me. My first chance to interact with real people. It took a while before I learned to really appreciate the skills they had and how much.. of an impact they could have on my life." This time he looks back at me. "And I like to think I've… Made an impression on them as well. And not always just with my fists."

There's a little polite laughter as he takes a moment while he works out where he's going-. No. He knows where he's going, he's just not entirely sure how to get there. Several of those present have watched while he spars with various volunteer Heraklya. He doesn't usually win, but he's doing better than most one year olds would.

"I'm not really sure I'm ready to be a prince. I'm certainly not gunna be ready to take the throne any time soon. But I'm learning as fast as I can. If I'm not worthy now, I will become worthy. It is a great honor you have bestowed upon me, and I will live up to its demands."

"Pavlos." I look left as Queen Hippolyta speaks my name. "The rest of this will be a… I believe my daughter has referred to them as 'meet and greet sessions'. If you wish to absent yourself, you may do so."

"Thank you." I nod, floating the platform backwards towards a solid-looking rooftop. The forum isn't really designed for public events of this size. Maybe I should have done this in the amphitheatre instead? But this is where the crowd was, and… That was the point. To get across a heroic tale from 'Man's World'. Once the royal party is safely down on a solid surface I eliminate the construct and turn away, floating in an arc in the direction of the closest empty street.

"Where are you off to?" Donna's following on behind me, apparently considering my dismissal to include her as well.

"In less than two weeks, I'm leaving the Earth. Possibly for years." I wonder if that counts if Klarion or Nabu manage to kill me? There's a good chance I'd end up in Erebos… "So there are more than a few things I need to get settled first."

Donna nods, pulling up alongside me as I head down into the streets. "You know, I didn't really think about it until Megan handed me the invitation, but Kon's birthday is on the fourth of July."

"Yes?"

She looks at me as we touch down, her head bowing slightly as she maintains the stare. "The fourth of July? In America-."

"Treason Day, I know. I think half the reason why Zatanna's so enthusiastic about it is that it's the only way she could ever persuade me to take part."

"You know, after midday, saying things like that is a pretty good way to start a fight in some places."

"Why after midday?"

"Most people hesitate to take a swing at a guy whose eyes glow orange. But once they get a few beers in them…"

"We're doing the party mid-afternoon and into the evening, and most of us aren't old enough to drink."

"Right. Because that always stops teenagers."

"And I can… Probably avoid making remarks likely to undermine the American nation.""For a day."

She nods as we enter a building and start up the stairs. "Are you leaving right after?"

"No, I'm planning on leaving on the eighth. Assuming that nothing comes up." I suppose I.. could ask Mister Free to boom tube me part of the way. It would save a good deal of time… Mm, can't hurt to ask. I stop outside my destination and knock on the door with my right fist.

Donna grins. "What, is this your secret Amazon love-" Iola opens the door, her abdomen swollen with a six month old foetus. Donna's eyes widen. "-neeeest?"

"Pavlos!" Iola steps out of her house and carefully embraces me. "It is good to see you!"

"Just thought I'd give you a quick check up while I'm here. Have you noticed any-?"

"Uh. As I have told my mother, my grandmother, my great great and many more greats grandmothers and every single one of my cousins, I am fine. Practice contractions, uncomfortable stretching, anal bleeding and clumsiness are all perfectly normal parts of pregnancy."

"Okay, then.. I.. guess I'm just here for the imaging scan. Assuming that you want to-."

"Oh yes! Tekla!" She turns away, heading back into the house. "Pavlos wants to show us what our daughter looks like!"

I take a hologram projector out of subspace. Hope this goes better than last time.

Iola looks uncertainly at the holographic image.

"Is it.. supposed to look like that?"

I take it the Amazons are shipping PavlosXKon now?

Kinda ironic since Helios is also technically a Titan right?

Yes. Helios and Oceanus also share grandchildren, although I suspect most titans probably do.

So that confrontation could have gone an entirely different way.

Helios possessed Kon barrels from the sun like a bullet.

Reaching Oceanus, Helios then starts a slideshow to show Oceanus the millenia of family history he's missed.

Guy: Could we have a vote on going back to dealing with apocalyptic tidal waves instead of the slideshow that will never end? Say aye if you're with me!

I think it's funny at times that how much both Paul and Grayven value communication, either for practical purpose or for personal reasons, but once the secrets they know come out it tends to screw them over to various degrees.

I can't wait to see everyone's reaction when Paul kills Nabu/Fate, what kind of colors are we going to see, especially if it explained how they've been planning and preparing for it under their noses.
If they get upset about it, OL and Zatanna had better call them out on it. Loudly, and possibly with violence. The League lost any right to their trust when they let Zatara put the Helmet on, and destroyed any chance of getting it back after they let him on the League.

Well, yeah, Life=pain, inasmuch as you have to be alive to be able to experience pain. So more of a Life~=Pain Then again, pain!=suffering.
It's not an unfamiliar concept to Earth, the first of Buddhism's Four Noble Truths is that life is suffering.

honestly I'm not even sure what that would do. Necron never really had a nailed down mentality or philosophy other than "rarr! life bad me smash!" I imagine zoat has a far more chilling mindset pegged to black enlightenment.
Something like Malthael from Reaper of Souls?

Yeah. But probably not all the time. If everyone is working to backstab everyone else, no one is working for the greater glory of Darkseid.

So when Darkseid tells you to cut the shit, you cut. the. shit.
I believe that was aptly demonstrated in JLU when he returned to Apokolips after Luthor's band of idiots revived him. He doesn't even have to say anything, he just shows up and everyone stops fighting.
