You have an FAQ?
The first rule of the FAQ is 'don't talk about the FAQ'.

What is this about?
With This Ring is a Self Insert (SI) story in which an individual very much like the author finds themselves in a fictional setting, in this case Earth 16. He is equipped with the pyjamas he was wearing when he appeared and an orange power ring.

What is Earth 16?
Earth 16 is the setting of the animated series Young Justice, the associated comics and that game we don't talk about. The number serves to differentiate it from other versions of Earth created by DC comics. For example, Batman: the Animated Series, Superman: the Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited take place on Earth 12. The SI's planet of origin will be referred to as Earth Prime.

Yes, that's a very Earth centric way of listing parallel universes.

Earth 16 is similar to pre-Flashpoint Earth 1, with some of the more extreme power sets toned down a bit. Superman is very strong, but he can't juggle planets. The Flash is very fast, but he can't run backwards or forwards in time. The Justice League has been together as a group for seven years.

How often do you post?
For over two years this story has updated daily. I aim to maintain this. Help me.

How does this story deviate from canon?
While I have tried to keep the story as true to the original series as possible one or two things have slipped by. For example, it is strongly implied that Alan Scott died some time before series one while here he is alive and serves as a major supporting character. In this story Donna Troy is known to Wonder Woman and has worked with her for several years while in the series (due to some sort of legal dispute) she never made an appearance and didn't start working with Wonder Woman until after series one ended. The 11th of September attacks never happened in this version of the setting due to the radically different post World War Two Middle eastern history which gave rise to entirely different countries.

As to what else is canon, I have made use of things written by the series' co-creator Greg Weisman's website, stuff from the Young Justice comic and quite a lot from wider DC canon.

Further deviations will occur as the SI causes changes that would not have occurred without him.

What does Renegade mean?
The morality system of the computer game Mass Effect describes aggressively assertive actions as 'renegade' and friendly and diplomatic actions as 'paragon'.

The SI is mostly paragon, going to considerable lengths to get on with everyone he meets. The Renegade parts of the story describe a version on him who made some rather different choices, and the results thereof. Renegade sections will usually have the date and time written in red.

Strongly renegade aligned decisions will be indicated with the renegade star-in-a-circle image.

Strongly paragon aligned decisions will be marked with the paragon wing-in-a-circle.

Please note that the main SI's paragon decisions are usually not marked in this way as there would be too many of them.

As of the present time none of the actions that have taken place in the Renegade timeline have affected the main SI's timeline and vise versa. Yes, this means that you can skip them if you like.

Renegade episodes are largely taken from the point of view of the Renegade. Again, at the moment they have not directly affected the main SI's timeline and I presently have no plans for them to do so. However, you may struggle to understand the SI segments in these episodes if you do not read the whole thing.

How are power rings made?
The hard way. Unlike in the older comics the power rings in this setting do not have the 'deputisation protocol' that briefly made a reappearance during Blackest Night. Forging a power ring or a personal lantern is a work that requires incredible spiritual discipline and technical skill.

Why are some parts of the text coloured?
Power rings require intense emotional focus to use well. To demonstrate this I have taken to colouring parts of the text to match the emotional resonance; yellow indicates that the person is feeling or provoking fear, for example.

What do different colours of power ring do?
Please note that a good deal of the below only applies to this story and is not normal DC canon.

Reds get red light blood vomit. That stuff will wreck pretty much anything. They can also take huge amounts of physical damage, being held together with red light. That's at least in part countered by the fact that they usually don't bother protecting themselves in other ways.
Orange gets assimilation and its variants.
Yellow constructs get reinforced by the fear they and their user generate.
Greens get minimal mental alterations.
Blues recharge from ambient hope.
Indigos can do long range teleportation and have some access to the other colours.
Violets can cause the violet light to manifest as a super strong mind altering crystal.
The rings used by the Anti-Green Lantern Corps can drain green rings for power and enhance the wearer's willpower at the cost of giving them a fatal brain hemorrhage after 24 hours.

What volume of space does the Green Lantern Corps patrol?
In this story sectors are relatively small, certainly far smaller than one 3600th of the Universe. All parts of the galaxy not specifically excluded by treaty have Lanterns assigned to them, as well as parts of intergalactic space and good chunks of the two nearest galaxies. Within a Sector forty-fifty inhabited worlds is the norm. Outside this area a major problem may well receive the attention of a Honour Guard strike force, with perhaps a garrison if the problem looks to be ongoing. The Corps is slowly expanding (Rot Lop Fan's homeworld is a highly radioactive place in intergalactic space) but the bigger it gets the harder it is to run and there aren't more Guardians to whom the existing ones can pass on responsibility.

What's with the invisible text?
Several characters use something called God Speech to communicate, most notably Mister Miracle, Big Barda and Grayven. Strictly speaking I should show this with a vast piece of psychedelic artwork but I'm just not that good an artist. In any location where New Gods are speaking it is probably worth selecting the text to see if there is anything to read that is hidden from mortal eyes.

I have also used invisible text for chess notation.

Are you going to cover the years in between series one and two?
Jumped up elementals help me, yes. This means that the story will be very long.

What to do in the event of a spelling error
Though I am a native English speaker I am not immune to making mistakes in my writing. Feel free to post any spelling, grammar or continuity errors you see in the main thread. However, in some cases I will not be able to correct the main thread if that thread has been locked so it is probably best to only remark on errors in the Story Only thread.

I also have... Let us call them 'grammatical idiosyncrasies'. These are not errors but intentional deviations from the norms of written English. For example, I use '..' to indicate a short unplanned pause in speech, while '...' indicates that speech trails off and stops. I also spell the exclamation 'whaw' rather than 'wow', due to the fact that as far as I am concerned it isn't a proper word but rather an attempt to write a noise and so should be written exactly as it sounds. I use speech marks at the end of paragraphs even when the same person will continue speaking in the next, because otherwise I lose track of the fact that it is speech. There will be other examples as well.

Speed Force?
Take it away Mister Weisman.
Greg Weisman said:
I'll admit I don't understand the Speed-Force. It comes after my time, so to speak, but I'll ask again, if there's a speed-force, does that also mean there's also a strength-force or an archery-force, etc.? What makes the concept necessary and not just unnecessarily complicated? I've not personally read the materials where it first appeared, so I have NO OPINION of them, but no one's ever been able to explain it to me OUT OF CONTEXT in a way that didn't cause me to make a 'yucky' face.

And AGAIN, I'll restate what I've stated many times since, which is that no one on Earth-16 has HEARD of the Speed-Force. If you want to believe it's there, but they just don't know about it, more power to you.

What's this about a game..?
Way way back many threads ago, I made a joke of implying that this story was a novelisation of a playthrough of a Young Justice RPG. Since then, several other posters have taken the idea and run with it. If you see a reference to a game, they are most likely doing that. Alternately, they might possibly be talking about the actual Young Justice game, but that happens far less frequently.

So... Spacebattles?
On the 30th of December I received a one day ban from Spacebattles. This was due to me posting the following:
'I've seen the film, and I'm still not sure how a government backed paramilitary counts as a rebellion.'
This fell afoul of the then Spacebattles policy of coming down hard on anyone talking about a film that may possibly involve... Wars. And maybe Stars.
My opinion is that this was complete overkill, and after my appeal was rejected I decided to move the thread to Sufficient Velocity. It will not be going back.

Scry Wards?
At a certain point in the story, the SI notices that he's finding it harder to locate people by power ring. The Doylist reason for this is that being able to find anyone he wants wherever they are is completely story breakingly powerful. The Watsonian reason is a nifty little magic trinket called a scry ward. Scrying is a form of magic remote viewing designed to locate people and objects. A scry ward is an artefact designed to make this either harder or impossible. It turns out that the mechanism used by power rings when they perform their basic scans is supremely vulnerable to being disrupted by these wards, and that weak versions are easy to mass produce. This means that sufficiently capable people can still hide, while still allowing the SI (and the Renegade) to use other ring-based techniques to try and find them.

Apparently necessary disclaimer
The views expressed by a character or by characters in this story do not necessarily reflect those of the author. There are no author mouthpiece characters, only individuals with their own perspectives and opinions.

Stars, Crossed (part 22)

Five move to surround me in the hope of avoiding my weapon, their belief that I can't see the ones behind me giving them the courage to try this. I don't look around as I block a strike to my rear with the shield then spawn a new Gordanian construct to drag my attacker down. They rise a little into the air, hoping to at least hold my attention. Yellow light flowing strong I deactivate my aero discs and use the ring's flight aura to erupt upwards towards the one whose tassels suggest seniority.

"Shoryuken!"

I keep the blade of the axe back so that only my fist strikes the armour in the centre of his chest. Nth metal is a remarkable absorber of force but I struck in the assumption that a display of force, of obviously overcoming their strongest advantage, would serve me better than a clean kill or KO. I turn to the other marines with a grin as the squad leader flies across the room to land hard on the floor of the lowest level. I gesture with my right hand and generate new spiked ropes, letting the hooks on the end mirror the movements of my foes like Cobras following a charmer's pipe. A thought and my construct Gordanians pull back as well, flying around to flank me.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Thanagarian Empire, I respectfully suggest that this is the time to yield. I have no particular love of unnecessary bloodshed but I am perfectly prepared to kill every last one of you if it proves to be necessary." I change my expression from the grin of a confident pugilist in the midst of a fight to the calm smile of a victor and allow the moans and whimpers of the wounded and dying to filter into their consciousness. "Surrender now and you will live to see Thanagar again."

Professional soldiers don't break and flee but these ones look about ready to fall back in poor order. Why aren't they doing that? I clearly have overwhelming force on my side. I look around the room as the officer who called in reinforcements nervously sticks his head out of cover. "You. What's your name?"

He briefly glances at his remaining forces before returning his attention to me. "I am Lieutenant Kragger of the Thanagarian Navy."

"Those heavy weapons are taking their time, aren't they? Don't think they're going to get here soon enough."

"We will never surrender to the likes-" That's who he is! He's the one Mister J'onzz leaves near-vegetative by forcing his way into his mind! "-of you, Praetor." They keep calling me that. I know it means either commander or magistrate but it's a very particular translation that presumably has some special meaning for them. Ring, I'd like a look at their database. Are these computers power ring proof?

Hardly, Corpsman. Accessing now.

The marines who were close to me have pulled back towards their comrades. Lieutenant Kragger turns to his subordinate. "He's the Praetor! If we kill him, the war is over!"

Don't give orders you know full well won't be obeyed, fool.

Data available, and I would not be so swift to demean his intelligence, Corpsman.

Ooooooooooh. So.. my alter ego unified the Gordanian clans, forged them into an empire and now leads them. And they think I'm him. Easy mistake to make, I suppose. They only identified him a little over a year ago which is why Shayera didn't recognise me when she first saw me. Any chance he could detect my presence here? Probably not. Any point trying to contact him myself? No. A military that could batter the Thanagarians to breaking point isn't something I want anywhere near any version of Earth. Hm. If these Thanagarians think I'm basically super-Hitler there's not much chance of achieving a negotiated solution.

Ah well.

"You couldn't take me when you were fresh. You certainly can't…" What's that noise? Ah. I don't turn to look at the three Thanagarian fighters currently lurking just in front of the bridge's front window, but I do look at Lieutenant Kragger as he manages a vicious smile.

I missed you doing that. Well played.

A storm of ironically yellow bolts blast the window to smithereens as they try and track me. I take three hits which ruin my construct armour and transition down to the lowest level, out of their arc of fire. Shield interposed.

"Evacuate the bridge! Carry the wounded if you can, leave them if you can't!"

One problem resolves itself. You know, if I had my flipping drones… Okay, my ring and armour can throw off most methods they could use to detect me. Construct armour. A ship this size could have hundreds of fighters. Do I try fighting them or move further inside the ship? Father Box?

Ploong.

I did not know that. So, Nth metal throws off boom tube generation and I only got in here because they have a great big window stuck on the front. Don't really think the main hangar would be a better place than here. Top surface of the ship? No, there's nothing up-. Fuck! Guess they've written off the rest of the wounded! I crouch shield over head as another volley of yellow bolts punch clean through the walls of the bridge. They're only approximately aiming at me but they're hitting with agh!

Fine then! I fly up and out of the window at high speed. Three ships close to, another five further back. Guns are on fixed nose mounts. I fly past the first fighter and hammer its left wing with the blade of my axe, cutting through and throwing off the balance of its antigravity propulsion system. Two plumes of smoke erupt from the cut and the fighter lurches to the side as the others in the squadron try and reacquire me. Standing in the air I glare at the closest and open my soul to their fear. They saw their fellow Thanagarians fleeing, didn't they? The yellow light builds in my eyes for a moment and then blasts out, smashing clean through the craft and severing the rear third. As it tumbles in the air the canopy blows and the pilot leaps free. Right, wings. Does he have a grav-chute on that ridiculous armour? Doesn't look like it. He's not going to-? Yes, he drew his sidearm and shot me. Fine then. Flashes of yellow from my eyes annihilate his pistol and pierce his wings in what looks like an extremely painful location, causing him to yelp and drop from the sky. He'll probably manage a survivable landing.

The third fighter manages to bring its guns to bear and open fire. Construct armour fractures when the beams strike home, right shoulder and forearm, before I get the shield in the way. My eyes glow again before the beam flashes out, gouging a furrow along the underside of the craft. I open my eyes wider as the beam reaches the armour protecting the main engine and increase the power. The beam slices into the hull and the fighter jerks as an internal explosion signals the end of its participation in the fight. Okay, so, what next? I sort of.. jumped in without coming up with a concrete-.

GAAAAAAHH!

Trans-transition! Get me back inside. Aaah. Guh. Agh. I'm… I'm lying on the uppermost walkway. The commander's station. No bodies up here and the fighters didn't manage to hit it. Uhh. Fucking.. anti-boarding external.. defences. I don't think that was just a big electrical discharge but whatever it was it hurt like agh! Aaaah. Right. Okay, map. This isn't fun any more. Ring, connect to the command station.

Impossible, Corpsman. The bridge has been physically disconnected from the rest of the ship's systems precisely to prevent a remote take over.

Okay, so I need to get to the computer core. Or at least somewhere I can make a hard connection. I push myself up onto my feet, taking a moment to steady myself. That.. really hurt. I should heal up before too long but I'd rather-.

The doors below me burst open as the marine heavy weapon teams finally put in an appearance. The first thing they see in the combat zone is the groaning bodies of their own fallen. Good start. Unfortunately for me they fly upwards and spot me almost immediately.

The first two are carrying what look like… Blaster Launchers? Hook coated chains wrap themselves around the bearers and yank them back down towards the middle layer where they land with a pair of yelps. Three shield bearers keep back, covering another marine with a short barrelled weapon of some kind. I create another construct Gordanian just in time for us both to be struck by another fusillade of yellow energy bolts from outside the ship. I create a barrier covering the hole where the window used to be just as the marine with the gun fires. Oh, what's-.

Ah.

Blood?

A Zoat appears!

This battle started to get tedious to read by the end, but in a way, that also means Renegade's frustration with the battle is communicated well to readers.

Bloody brits, I swear. (Should be color, I believe).
Thank you, corrected.
And thanks for going out of your way to bring this to us.
It's moving the Story Only that's going to kill me. Do I remember there being some sort of easy upload mechanism for Spacebattles stuff?

Oh, and would somebody mind popping over to the Spacebattles thread and informing them that I'm here? Ta everso.

Zoat, just alerted the SB thread to your appearance here.

Prepare for the influx of posts and ratings.

Edit: I swear, I made the post both here and over there before I refreshed the page to find the edit in your latest post.

That is correct. Once my ban ends at 2100 I will make my final post in that thread, linking here.
Understood.

Also, if you still want to link back to the previous eleven and story SB thread in your current signature, I took the liberty of copying the links over (although I suggest making a new addition for the SV thread). Just quote the post and ctrl+c - ctrl-v the following line, then do your orange coloring.

With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Two) (Three) (Four)(Five)(Six)(Seven)(Eight)(Nine)(Ten)(Eleven)(Story Only)

To hazard at a guess, the spoiler overreaction was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak?
No, not really. I didn't have any real problem with the way Spacebattles was being run before that. I'm not really sure why I feel as angry about this as I do, but once the moderator who answered my appeal post made it clear it wouldn't be reconsidered I made my decision.

It is your decision, and I may continue to follow this story here... I would still ask that you consider a little more before you make it permenant. however if you truly feel that the migration should be total, then that is your decision

Why is there no "I approve of your vindictive sadism" rating? This is a serious oversight on the part of SV's mods and I hope they correct it quickly.

I've always been of the opinion that the creator of the thread should be the one who contacts mods for moderation. It should be up to you what goes on in your thread. Not a perfect system but I think I would prefer it.

Well, I think focusing on the migration is probably not productive.

Grayven's getting smacked around and it makes me very, very happy.
