I'm rather agog at anyone calling outlawing consensual sexual practices moral. From a moral viewpoint, outlawing polygamy is exactly the same as outlawing homosexuality. You are saying you are entitled to legislate the sexual lifestyles of other people, and punish them for finding love or being in a relationship in a manner you disapprove of.
If a practice that is consensual is proven to cause net harm to both the participants and society at large, I don't see a moral reason to object to the ban. Polygamy seems to lead to the exploitation of women, and general unhappiness in the men that can't get wives. If these effects outweigh the benefit of allowing polygamy to such an extent that it causes a large harm to the society, then a ban seems like the correct decision. It may be the case that the above negatives don't apply to first world countries, in which case a ban shouldn't happen, but that's a disagreement on facts rather than on morality.

I'm not discounting the importance of personal autonomy, far from it. But autonomy isn't the end all be all of morality, and large negatives in other areas can outweigh the benefits to autonomy. It isn't a contradiction to support near complete privacy laws while being opposed to the legalization of certain highly addictive drugs like heroin, because individual privacy almost universally doesn't harm people while heroin almost universally does, far in excess of the benefit to their autonomy. Especially since heroin heavily decreases an individual's ability to have informed, unbiased consent to using more heroin. Similarly, gambling is restricted in many countries, even though that's a restriction on how people spend their own money.

I apologize for the strong wording of my initial post, because I can't say that I have done the research to support such a strong conclusion, but I won't apologize for supporting a ban on something that at the moment seems to have a large net negative impact on individuals and society, even if it does increase the autonomy of some people.

@Mr Zoat,

I'm not interested in this digression from the plot.

I don't care about these characters. I don't even care about the protagonist and haven't for a while, but I just noticed that.

But I like how you're introducing the world building in this conversation.

By this reasoning we shouldn't outlaw incest.

I mean, incest has a history of leading to problems for the resulting offspring, so that's why that's illegal. There's a reason why European kings were so messed up; their family trees were more like family balls of yarn. But polyamory doesn't have that problem, so I personally have no problems with it being legal. (Not that I think such is particularly likely any time soon, mind.)

That's somewhat irrelevant to Bramble's post. Polygamy may not have the specific problems that incest does, but if it does have negative results on the same level as incest, it makes sense to outlaw it the same as incest even if it does impair people's ability to choose how they live their life.

I mean, yeah, but I wasn't responding to Bramble, I was responding to arromdee, who had a very different point that requires a different angle to approach.

If Jade didn't expect to be involved, then I'm not really clear on why she's pushing so much...
When I was in secondary school I spend a period off with some illness or other, and in order to ensure that I didn't fall behind my history teacher leant me a textbook. One of the things I discovered -and which wasn't in the main class textbook- was the King James I/VII was very homosexual. That was something that our teacher -who was covering the period- apparently didn't know either.

On the other hand, in this setting, Emperor Ai is the subject of a well known and popular romantic comedy.

When I was thinking about this episode I tried to work out how relationships would work in a world not as influenced by European Christianity as ours is. How they think about orientation is one of the points of divergence, as Christianity has traditionally been extremely negative to homosexuality and even in liberal Christian areas... You don't come out as straight.

On Apokolips for example, they also have two orientations. Not gay and straight, but yes and no. The schools of thought run something along the lines of 'I'm a god, I enjoy it, I'm going to do it' and 'it makes you physically and emotionally vulnerable, best avoid'.

This Jade isn't heterosexual or homosexual. She'd understand the words, but they aren't cornerstones of social interaction in her society as they are in ours. If she had to honestly choose a word to describe her approach to choosing partners it would be 'career'. Her job is to act as 'control' for a super functionary, and she counted herself very lucky to get assigned to the SI. No Lantern has ever not joined the local Justice League equivalent, but the fact that he is a 'barbarian' means that there was less competition than might otherwise have been the case. The downside is that if he does join, she'll be socially out of her league and would expect to be dumped. The way she sees it, if there's a Second Mistress of higher social status around as well then that's less likely to happen.
on this Earth
down right disturbing
downright disturbing
Thank you, corrected.
Mr Zoat have you read any books where this social progression is the norm? I get the feeling that this society's setup draws from some other source.
What social progression? I'm not.. basing this on anything else in particular. Fallen Dragon -which I didn't particularly like- had a focus planet where polygamy was legal but usually only occurred in one man two women groups.

Stop: Stop
Well time to skip this like I did the whole Lotus Machine thing. I mean is just a Time Trapper Pocket Universe anyway so...
stop @Pinklestia you are already warned in the past not to make such posts again. They add nothing to the discussion and are rather rude to the author who invests time and effort in writing the story.

You have been given a infraction for 25 points and a three day reply-ban.

I really like this idea. It's genuinely a good idea for an episode, and I anticipate myself enjoying it. However, I think there are some problems in its execution. Granted, you're the only one who knows how this episode will go, and the rest of us are only two updates in, but we can't work off information we don't have.

So, I think the idea is great, but as other people have said, because of the way this timeline stuff works, there really isn't a good way for the events of this episode to have lasting consequences. If the SI pops into existence in this timeline as he was at the end of the last one, the episode will likely revolve around getting back to the normal timeline, because there is way too much momentum to abandon it now. The changes caused by Christianity not being prominent are set dressing. The Jade here may end up coming with the SI, or something like that, but otherwise it would be difficult for the world here to have lasting consequences for the main story. If the SI doesn't show up, then this is a less important version of the Ambush Bug episode, where the SI isn't seeing anything particularly new.

I think your idea would have been better implemented by using existing characters and settings. The easiest I think would be to have either the SI or Grayven spend a period of time on Tamaran, and show the differences in societal norms that can partially be traced to the lack of Christianity. This would serve as world building for the planet that the SI and Grayven have spent the most time on other than Earth, and do some character building for the princesses if it made sense to include them in the episode. We really haven't seen either of them since Control, a number of real time months ago.

Alternatively, if you wanted to explore Asian cultures specifically, you could have had Grayven spend time with... Those two people who got married and Grayven attended the wedding and whose names I forgot. That could have highlighted the differences that society makes in interpersonal relations. It would have also shown more of the Chinese government's relation to Grayven.

I'm partial to an episode like this on Tamaran, for character and setting development purposes, from either the SI's or Gryaven's view. I think it would work for Grayven better, mostly because I'm not sure why the SI would need to spend a significant amount of time on Tamaran, but I think either could work fine.

Wow... OL needs to stop getting dropped into alternate universes with memories in his head. Heck, he even lost his enlightenment quotation marks, so there is some serious shenanigans going on. This is what, the third time this has happened. I think that OL being hyper competent compared to your standard comic book character is attracting the attention of some serious Beings with a capital B. I am interested to see where this goes.

Yesh... That poor girl...

Either I'm misinterpreting what you're saying, or I don't think culture influences sexuality anywhere near as much as you do. Or at the very least it seems you are significantly neglecting biological factors.

I just don't see why a culture that isn't as concerned about who you bang would somehow translate into people not having preferences, or not thinking about people in relation to those preferences.

Character development? Seeing a different version of himself conforming to different societal norms and pursuing another relationship could make him reevaluate himself.

That's what I'm hoping for at least. The track record for otherworld building is:
Doppëlganger (Earth neg14 crossover) didn't cause any actual changes besides the mana battery for fighting Nabu and M'gaan accepting herself as a white martian.
Fool's Canon (Ambush Bug) didn't cause any changes for the foreseeable future.
Stars Crossed (Earth 50 crossover) resulted in Grayven getting a Yellow Power Ring and adopting Lynne. Pretty damn consequential compared to the last two.
This episode probably won't be mindbogglingly essential to the plot, but it should definitely have more impact than Doppëlganger did.

Homosexuality was actually pretty damn normal. Anywhere it wasn't... was predominantly Islamic or Christian.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Zoat doesn't get paid for this nor is there a risk of him getting dropped if he doesn't keep up readership. If this sort of stuff keeps the story fresh for him then go for it.

I'm waiting for him to unintentionally connect to the Ophidian, and the Ophidian losing its shit because someone messed with its Orange Lantern.

Seconded, burn this whole timeline to the ground.

I've always found the romance sections of this fic the creepiest, but this takes the whole goddamn NYC-sized cake.

edit: You know what I'd want to see right about now that would keep the story fresh? I'd like to see some typical superpowered supervillain, say, solomon grundy or clayface, get taken down by the police just as the superheroes arrive. They were using Kordtech and Atlantian equipment, and the superheroes just look around and are like "huh, guess I'm.... not really needed here." And slowly things start to change, until eventually it's just a matter of Light and supervillains equipped with Lightweight (get it) equipment which the conventional forces can't take, vs. the Justice League and whatever heroes aren't retired.

It would show Paul really has made a difference and still keep the major threats going. No more arbitrarily powerful bad guys who can somehow tank Illustres Paul unless they're Light-made and thus designed to be on that level. It's what Paul said during the Titanfall arc: They beat all the street-level guys, they're on the next level. Streetcrimes are now capable of being dealt with by streetcops, humanity is advancing out of it's costumed hero stage.

And in the distant future, in a legion holding cell, Nylor Truggs laughs last.

Mandated (part 3)
5th July 2010
Mid day

I have no idea what is going on.

The power ring I could understand. I've read enough comics to know what that is. And waking up in orbit with an artefact of power… Sure. I've read enough of Hiver's work to understand the.. situation, even if I never thought it could possibly really happen. But…

What happened to Earth?

Why is the ring telling me there were nuclear strikes all over eastern China and Japan? Why can't I hear any English language radio? Why are there space ships? Did I go forward in time or something? I don't remember that happening in any DC-owned setting… Or any other setting. Which means that once the ring-.

I plummet through the air, cold biting my skin through my pyjamas! Okay, I-. Ugh, not easy to breathe. I'm high enough up that the fact that I'm falling isn't an immediate problem. Calm. Calm.

I want to fly.

And the environmental shield is back and I'm… Okay, I'm still falling, but the rate at which I'm falling is decreasing.

Once the ring runs out of power I'm stuffed. The ring has a universal translator, but I don't speak any languages other than English. Which is fine when English is the world's dominant language, but a bit of a problem when the dominant language is… Ring?

Language self-identifies as 'Mandarin Chinese'.

Chinese? How am I supposed to learn Chinese? It doesn't even have letters!

No! No. Calm. Want.

Want.

Okay. I can grab a bigger pile of gold and set up a life for myself in.. this version of Britain. Just accept not having a ring. I can head for an alien planet… No, where would even have a way to charge a power ring? Oa? No. Okaara? Larfleeze would kill me. If it even exists. Qward? Even if I could get there, I'd have to get very lucky. Ring, I… Are there any.. unused personal lanterns down there?

Ring? Agh, right. Ring. Find personal lanterns.

Three found.

I don't suppose any of them are
Spare? Are they?

Local news broadcasts show only two local Lanterns as active.

Who?

Fang Zhifu and Yifei Jade.

Who?

Lantern names are Fang Zhifu and Yifei Jade.

I have no idea who they-. No, wait. Wasn't.. August General in Iron's name Fang? Okay, he was… Ring, what does he look like?

An image of a.. athletic, militant looking Asian man appears in my mind. Not that tall and certainly not possessing iron skin. Pre-Durlan, or… Given how different things are, that might not have happened. And… Jade?

That's not.. Alan Scott's daughter.

Where the.. hell am I..?

Ring, the third?

Sunao Souma. Japanese national. Presumed retired. Eighty six years of age.

Wh-? No, I just have to accept that I'm not going to recognise anyone. He's retired and he's left his lantern.

!Get the lantern! NEED IT!

That's my one chance of having any say over what happens to me. And he's not using it. Ring, mark location.

A crosshair rather like the ones which marked mission locations in Tiberian Sun appears in my field of view. Elevated radiation levels, not somewhere I'd want to grow food… But I've got an environmental shield. Magnify. Hm. Looks like a park. Of course, so does the area around Chernobyl… Then again, I remember a documentary which demonstrated that slightly raised radiation levels actually deceased cancer rates by causing anti-cancer genes to express themselves, so… It could be safe?

Anyone around?

Hm. No. There's a medium sized army base not too far away, but no security on site.

Okay, so-.

!Get lantern!

Uh. I want to get the lantern. Negotiating would be good. I can.. try to buy it. But ultimately it doesn't matter. I need it. And I've got no real ties to this Earth; once I have a lantern I can just fly off to anywhere. Of course.. if there's no one down there…

I twist in the air until I'm pointing face down towards my target. And then I accelerate. Huh. The ring's showing me how fast I'm going but I'm still so high up that it's not really… Oh. Okay, getting bigger. It's most noticeable in the horizon; now I can look left or right and see blue sky rather than black space. And then the planet's around me rather than beneath me.

Oh. I'm not exactly sure what Mount Fuji looked like back on my home Earth, but I think this one's been in the wars. The lower parts are green, but the land beneath is cratered and radioactive. Why would someone nuke a mountain? Even if they wanted to destroy it, nuclear bombs aren't particularly effective anti-mountain weapons.

Getting closer. I can see larger roads, urban areas and individual woodlands. Not as many of the latter as I would have expected, but I suppose if their major urban areas got nuked… There's only so much land in the Home Islands. Maybe maintaining high-density habitation wasn't practical?

Ring. Any sign of aircraft?

Yes. However, none are moving to intercept.

Good show. Any green other than the lantern?

None detected.

Well… If he is retired, I suppose there'd be no reason to hang around. But I'm on a time limit. I can just… Leave a pile of gold.

Individual trees and slow

I come to a stop just above a lawn. There's a gazebo and a bench… Some tended flower beds. And a sort of plinth…

!Get lantern!

Which is where the lantern is. No one around…

"Hello?" I look around as I drift towards the plinth. "Anyone using this?" … "No?"

I give any watchers a moment.

"Okay, I'm just going to borrow this?"

Another moment. Good show. I come to a halt facing the plinth and hold out my arms to the side.

!Get lantern!

Ring, get me the lantern.

Compliance.

Orange light flickers between my hands and the space the subspace pocket occupies, and a moment later the green personal lantern materialises. I lower my hands. Ye-.

And then the green fist hits me in the side!
