I don't think we ever expanded on this and that's a shame.
Are spell focuses aside from staffs common in Warhammer? The last chapter mentioned not just forming the arrows, but entire bows to use the spells, so I'm curious if we could use tools to 'focus' spells more easily.
Also, I'm curious if we could adapt said spell to Ulgu for our revolvers. Alternatively adapting Shadow Knives for it.
shooting a shadow knife from a revolver? it's cool :)

Considering the date and technology available a full blown Nurglite plague would be more like the Black Death on steroids. It's also not really a likely threat to Karak Eight Peaks - Pestilens is occupied and there's no major Nurglites active anywhere in the area.

If anything the next likely threat to Karak Eight Peaks are either greenskins or Chaos Dwarf armies, with serious Skaven activities being a longer term problem. That said the situation in Karak is probably stable enough for us to consider preparing to visit the elves.
It's entirely up to Boney if it happens or when it would happen, but there's always Tamurkhan. In canon, I think it's still a few decades before he came through, but all the relevant players are alive right now- nothing stopping Boney from setting it off early.

Oh my... I hadn't looked in a while. A tied romance vote... interesting. The vote's been called, you say?

Personally, I don't think I voted (I ship Math x Aromanticism XD), but got to say, Pan has my (completely useless) support.

Also, it's interesting that no-one got the majority. FPTP sucks as a voting system.

The vote hasn't been officially called yet.

While the battle for Aromanticism has been lost (... And probably has been lost since Abel only narrowly lost way back when), you can still fight for Panpan! And any other ships you'd like, approval voting is in full effect here!

(by which I mean please vote for Qrech as well he is a nice rat and he deserves to be loved)

It hasn't been called, and we don't know what criteria Boney will be using. It might be the top X, it might be everyone who gets more than Y votes, it might be some other criteria. He kept it deliberately vague to avoid people trying to game the system.

I believe the words were something akin to this vote being the first steps to additional actions about who we might be compatible with, if any.

I'm all for aromanticism but seeing how panorama would react to being flirted with was to good to pass up. So if it doesn't go anywhere that's fine but the journey will be glorious! Assuming the vote doesn't swing to Johann, blah.

Still higher than Anton though, which is a shame.

Wonder if a Plague could be the next problem for Mathilde? Its one of the things we dont have preparations for, and also something that can be caused by K8P being a central trading hub.

It would hit too close to home to a bunch of people.

Also, I don't think that Mathilde (and K8P) are in that much of a safe position that seeking out further problems is neccessary.

A full-on nurglite plague is incomparable to the COVID situation. This isn't belittling the problems or suffering it's causing, but at least it's not wiping out entire cities, turning its victims into plague zombies, etc.

Honestly... you may be suprised. A fully lethal/ crippling plague may be waaaay less destructive that a plague that harms some and incubates without symptoms on others, because the second spreads faster and can slip past quarantines.

There is a reason the virus that shall not be named paralyzed the world while there are a lot of more lethal, easily spreadable viruses that amounted to very litle worldwide. It is for the same reasons a predator that is too efficient goes extinct. An efficient virus maximizes the hosts, and this is why Nurgle fails, he always goes for maximizing the symptoms instead.

I mean, Nurgle is the manifestation of the concept of 'rock bottom' in life, so it makes sense that everything he does makes people miserable.

I think the reason people are usually going "Tzeenctch and co" when talking about the chaos gods is how utterly inneficient the other 3 are at causing any long term damage, being more like glorified, more destructive natural disasters than true existential threats. Similar to the reasons people go "Simurgh and co" when thinking about the Endbringers. Without the existence of the planners, those groups wouldn't really constitute nearly as much a threat.

In fairness, Tzeentch isn't much better given that every other step of his plans is to sabotage another of his plans and vice versa.

I am aware, just pointing out that for a practically omniscient chessmaster, Tzeentch is honestly pretty ineffectual as a force of tangible change.
From what little I actually know about Tzeentch my idea is that he doesn't care about the level at which change takes place,
For example:
Changing hair color is placed on the same scale as changing the dominant species in the galaxy

that's just my take anyways

Virtually every Warhammer RPG spell has a unique listed ingredient, usually something at least tangentially thematically related to the spell. They lower the spellcasting target number, and are used up in the casting, so they're probably not exactly what you mean by a reusable focus.

Chips from a horses hoof are components for our Shadowsteed spell, for example. Boney once mentioned that in our early Journeymanling days, we'd get them (and confused looks) from blacksmiths. They're a crutch we no longer need for the simpler spells.
IIRC Black Lotus seeds harvested in shadow (that usually rare and expensive poison Panoramia found way back around the spider-goblin woods) are components for Burning Shadows. I think a handful of 'natural fertiliser' helps her cast her field-yield boosting Spring Bloom spell.
So the difficulty of obtaining said ingredient can vary. Her Thorn Nightmare Fuel spells use thorns that have pierced flesh as components, so are to some degree self-replenishing.

So I'd thought I would share some ideas on where I personally would like to see this thread go. This is very heavily based on what I most enjoyed reading about, so, obviously it would be more of that.

Finishing up Mastering her Infiltration and Assassination skills.

Delving into the Under Empire to live among Skaven for a time, to expand her vocabulary and reading skills to encompass Skaven Magic, as well as generally scout their civilisation.

Exploring Greenskin strongholds near Karak Eight Peaks, and running a series of Assassinations on their leadership to frame rivals, leading to a series of civil wars.

Mastering her Magical Potential further and unlocking that motherfucking Flying shadow Mount.

Taking up the Elven offer to go fight on their territory for 3 months, which we could probably use as the Crucible to mastering her skills.

Getting Kragg to make her an Item that slows or stops her Aging. She's pushing Mid thirties and I don't want the Badass fun times to start coming to a close. If Felix can be preserved as long as he was by the proximity of a side effect, Kragg can damn well make it a main effect in close quaters that should be able to show some similar results.

Run Solo expeditions to the Far North and South West to scout out lost Dwarf holds. While they have fallen, there may still be survivers in their deepest reaches that are cut off from help. We need to establish contact, bring in word, and then arrange expeditions that cut around enemy forces to reach in and rescue them.

And finally, I'd like to Scout East as far as East goes. That's right, road (or sky) trip to Nippon to learn some Ninja tactics. Maybe attempting to Infiltrate the Eshin training facilities to either loot it, learn from it, or maybe even go on a assassination spree.

Basically, I want to lean into the Solo Magic Infiltrator/Assassin type that's Very unique to see in Warhammer.

Boney has asked that we not go East, on account of there being all of diddly and squat in terms of lore to work with over there.

The Mystery of the East
The East,
As your information network continues to grow you notice a startling trend about news from the East. As your network expands in all other directions news from the East suddenly halts. You send out a request to your agents for more information but they only react with confusion. Everyone you ask about what lies to the East simply brushes your comment off like it's no concern. You contact the elf mercenary whose memoir you wrote and all you get back is a letter saying that the East is something you must learn about yourself, even renaldo is suspiciously quiet about it.
After all these dead ends you begin to have a disquieting feeling. This is something you'll have to go find out for yourself. You go to the king and tell him you've received important information that you have to verify. You head back to your tower to put your affairs in order, the elf's warning was making you paranoid, and bud your ducklings to be good. Then your off.
everything seems to be going well as you meet your agents in the town that is on the eastern edge of your growing spy network. He acknowledges the code that verifys you as a trusted agent and his information is solid. At least until you ask what is further East. Then he blankly stares at you, his face twitches and he reaches to his head like it hurts. He then pauses and like you had just asked the question he responds "nothing", " well nothing important anyways".
Pale and more worried then ever you have to rethink if your going to continue your search for what lies to the East. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately you find your curiosity far outweighs your fears and you set off again. Having to exit the north gate and circle around the walled city to continue East.
At first everything seems alright but then you start to notice little oddities. You had to cut through a forest yet there are no trails for animals to cross and the normal sounds you'd hear in a non zombie infested forest are absent as well. You grow more uneasy as the trees start to look off, somehow less. Then the trees start to gradually then until all your left with is a flat plain of grass as far as the eye can see.
You muster what courage you have left to keep going and you begin to regret it as a possible explanation to what lies out East occurs to you. The grass slowly disappears, leaving only a smooth unbroken plain of earth that is terrible to see in how unnatural it is. If everything had been dead that would be one thing, but it's like there's nothing there, like nothing ever was except a flat plain that continues on before simply ending. Here at what you have recently discovered to be the edge of the world you watch as even the winds begin to lose cohesion. And you realize that your agent was right there really was "nothing" to the East. Uglu coils around you in a manner that is almost sympathetic. You only turn around and snap out of it when you hear a cat meow behind you. You quietly turn around, pick up the cat and walk away. You don't look back.

that was fun, I am typically an awful writer and this is no exception but the comment about being told to not go to the East made me think of this. Kind of like a video game at the edge of the map except you don't just miraculously come out on the other side or hit an invisible wall. It's just the end there's nothing there don't know if I conveyed that well or not.

Alright, let's put a vote in, since people are telling my the vote hasn't been called. Since It's approval, might as well toss in anything I'm cool with.
Also, you can probably see a general pattern to my votes XD What can I say, I live up to my name.

Sorry, @Omegahugger, whilst I agree that Qreech needs some love, I think more friendship and companions.
I simply think that the differences in skaven culture and human culture would likely render any romance... complicated.
Also, no, the dragon doesn't have the same issuesshutup

And yes, I recognize that the battle for Aro!Math has been lost; that's ok! I just kinda felt it fit well with being a grey wizard.

This quest was recommended on Something Awful something like 5 times before I finally got around to checking it out, since I'm not normally a Warhammer fan. Now that I've had to the chance to catch up, it's very much worth the read!

I ended up reading through the whole quest over a week or so, and I kept being impressed by engaging characters and some really solid adventuring / investment campaigning. It turns out that Warhammer Fantasy has a lot of cool stuff to offer as a setting, and we actually get to see a pretty good swathe of it through this protagonist.

As far as the latest vote goes, that dragon seemed surprisingly reasonable. Maybe we can be friends! It could ease any tensions that crop up between them and the dwarves down the line, and I am legit interested in seeing more non-human perspectives in this quest. I guess I'll throw in the dragon expert, while I'm at it. He's kinda smug and self-absorbed, but seemed like a decent guy by elf standards. Giant psychic spiders to round things out, they seemed to get along with Mathilde really well and both are intensely interested in learning new things.

A shame that "No Romance" didn't win. But if there must be romantic interest, let it be with characters I wouldn't mind seeing more of:

[X] Magister Johann
[X] Chief Bombardier Oswald Oswaldson
