This is an actual surprise! a republican from a fantasy kingdom. Like how do you justify a republic in a place that has super powered, generally benevolent, absolute monarchs. Did they even have examples to show that it may work? Cause trying to convince people who had monarchy for all their life to go for republican form of government is gonna be hard as hell.
Jadeite: In sort - I have seen, rather personally, that the Queen was not infallible. She was capable of making decisions that were simply factually wrong. She was still a magical powerhouse stronger than anyone on any other world that we had encountered, but she wasn't perfect. I honestly wouldn't have even minded if she continued to be the ultimate arbitrator of things. I simply wanted the actual people of the planets to have more say in how their worlds and their lives were run. And yes, there were some examples - the Shantir for instance had a very confusing system of government that I don't particularly think was 'better', but it was different. The Shantir people were divided into a series of different castes, and each caste was further divided into dozens of different clans. Each Caste ruled over the Shantir people for a period of a decade, and during that decade every year the controlling power was in the hands of one particular clan. As chosen by a series of random electors pulled from the other castes. Another group of people that we encountered used something not dissimilar to the Three Branches of Government that the American system uses. However, their government had five branches, and the top member of each branch formed a ruling council that did everything that the American president does. I liked that one the best.

If you mean what I think you mean, we're likely to derail that. "Could or does have a Senshi" is a less arbitrary way to define what is and is not a planet. Though that assumes that astronomers learn what a Senshi actually is...

TBH that's just going to be another competing point in the 'BEHOLD, A MANPLANET!' quibbling. Might result in Pluto getting grandfathered in; according to Wikipedia Mercury doesn't actually fit the current criteria.
Though it does bring up the question of if Pluto's always been the IRL planet or if the screenshot I vaugely remember from SWSM is its Silver Millenium appearance.

There is another long silence. "I begin to get the sense that Ermis is rather less present in your mind than Endymion might have been in that modern boy's, even without the accident."
That is a very critical thing for him to recognise. If he can internalise that the senshi of today are not the senshi of his era then relations should improve.

The particular one under discussion has approximately 74.8 million square kilometres of surface area.
We are probably better off trying to track whatever communications the bunkers are sending to the Moon than doing a visual inspection.

In this, you are very probably correct, but a rough idea of where we're going certainly doesn't hurt.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Ami asked questions that were more technical and abstract in character, and then didn't relay that information to Usagi if she didn't expect it to be immediately relevant.

If Ami Mizuno got in the habit of telling her dear friend Usagi everything that she knows and Usagi doesn't, then Ami'd wind up with the end of the world and the final triumph of the seasonal villain on her conscience. Because Ami'd keep poor Usagi so busy having her ear talked off that she'd have no time left over for fighting evil. :p

I think you're underestimating the significance of some celestial bodies being able to walk into the IAU and personally argue for their own inclusion. And there being a state with an actual interest in celestial body designation, with its own fully functional taxonomy already in place. Multiple such states, in fact, with first contact with the TSAB imminent. There might be room to pick between the taxonomies of Crystal Millennium, the TSAB, and the Citadel or whoever else shows up, but the IAU making its own novel definition of "planet" at this stage would be like Mongolia creating its own version of maritime law.
The number's right, even if area shouldn't be cubic.

All I can tell you is that she had a reputation for a towering intellect and a nearly perfect memory, so whatever she was doing, there was probably a reason for it."

Ah. Photographic memory. Why bother organizing your database when you remember exactly where everything is?

It's like those highly intelligent people who have piles of loose papers on their desk, but somehow can always figure out exactly where the one document they need is in that mess.

The argument that people ought to be responsible for their own government instead of putting it all on one person. (Even if that means people suffer bad government).

There are republicans in England. I mean, it's not quite the same, but the British monarchy isn't any threat to the liberties or freedoms of the British.

In short.

That reminds me, in 1992, odessey(iirc) is but a pipe dream and humanity has not been greeted with the sight of Plugo's heart, even after THE BETRAYAL...

Plugo? You mean Pluto?

We refer to this as the Ponder Stibbons effect, and it is indeed probably best that Ami avoid developing this particular disposition. :V

I have to admit, I am waiting with baited breath to see how the Mercury Cryochamber storyline plays out. Because while the senshi are reincarnated with only fragments of memories , Luna and Artemis (or at least Luna) have memory issues due to the cyro-preservation method used, Endymion's is still alive (and he's had time to adjust/accept things), and Smarágdi/Jadeite is similar.

But the people on Mercury, they went into those chamber during or even before the Fall. And soon they will be waking up to a princess that doesn't remember them*, a homeworld that has been reduced to a barren lifeless rock, and a time when the Silver Millennium (aside for maybe less than 200 people not counting the Youma etc) has been reduced to a legend at most.

I'm seriously intending to cue up this music for when when the reawakening occurs. Those who have played the game know why.

*Ermis was the Magistorium of the Mercurian Academy of Sorcery which is where the larger group of cryo-pods are. Good chance that she worked with at least some of the people in them.

This takes place over a decade before MESSENGER even launched, and nearly two decades before the probe settled into Mercury orbit. In 1992, the Mariner 10 photos were the only close-up imagery of the planet Mercury that humanity had.

While we're at it, Voyager 2 only passed Neptune a little less than three years ago, in-setting.
Furthermore, we are ≈6 months out from Galileo's second Earth gravity assist. I imagine between now and December, Nasa is gonna have a great brand new target to test instrumentation on during that flyby.
"NASA on the 1990 & 1992 flybys said:
These flybys gave Galileo an opportunity to image the Moon at various wavelengths with the Solid State Imaging (SSI) camera. The camera uses a high-resolution, 800 x 800 charge-coupled device (CCD) array with a field of view of 0.46 degrees. Multi-spectral coverage is provided by an eight-position filter wheel on the camera, consisting of three broad-band filters: violet (404 nm), green (559 nm), and red (671 nm); four near-infrared filters: 727 nm, 756 nm, 889 nm, and 986 nm; and one clear filter (611 nm) with a very broad (440 nm) passband.
I have a feeling here they will be using more of Galileo's instrumentation on the 1992 flyby than they did on the 1990 one.

Hmm. Did they? They were definitely in the bunker at the time of the Fall, but getting into the cryogenic chambers to be frozen is an extra step that you probably wouldn't do if you're expecting an S&R team to pull you out of the rubble within the week (or to be the S&R team on a planet that still has an atmosphere). Maybe they stayed awake for a while after the Fall, until it became clear that it really was as bad as it looked and even the extrasolar territories were for one reason or another unable to do rescue operations or even contact them, and their best chance really was to be frozen and wait in the hope that in the fullness of time somebody would eventually visit Mercury again.

Maybe being thawed out by Sailor Mercury instead of aliens exploring a galaxy full of planetary graveyards is a relief.

Yeah, much better that they wake up to the Post-Apocalyptic reincarnation of their Princess than an Extremely Sad Bird. That wouldn't be good.

List of Potential Shocks:
  • "Well, at least the Earth Kingdom survived. Splintering? Hmm, I suppose that's concievable. How many factions do we need to wrangle back together? Perhaps one or two for each continent... 193!?"
  • "Speaking of continents, where's Atlantis?"
  • "Apparantly we not only lack the tools to remake this gadget, we lack the tools to make the tools to remake this gadget."
  • "So, we are working with a fledgling enforcement agency for this small collection of islands on Earth, which has only just scraped the surface of industrialized magic production. And we are letting them treat the Princess and her retinue as peers?"
  • "Oh, what about Elas Arid? Granted, we lack the spacecraft to reach them anytime soon, but I'm sure we can rig up some subspace communicators to... oh, 'relegated to myths and legends' as well? Damn it."
  • "If you're going grocery shopping, could you grab some silverberries? ...No, silverberries. You have to know... ALL of them gone? Wait, oranges made it through the millenia, but not silverberries?
  • "The Earthlings are demanding to review our practices for safety!? We have to sit by and watch them charge up their slapdash, inefficient ritual circles that are one surge away from going haywire, and they have the GALL to imply that they can act as an authority for safe magical practices?"
  • "Which one is the President? ...No, I can see who's talking. Clearly they've sent out some town crier who has no actual authority. I mean, he's got no mental protections whatsoever; can you imagine someone with actual sensitive information or government clearance going out in public with NO protections?"
  • "What the hell are these Earthlings using to power their cars? ...Petroleum? These people have had millennia to get back into things, and the current height of engineering for personal travel is combustion engines?"
  • "...Heh. Ha ha. Hahahahahaha! Guys, you'll never believe this! This Earthling's trying to hire me AWAY from her Majesty's service. Stars above, can you imagine?"
