Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
I didn't mean that XS was driveless or without interest toward his romantic poursuit. I think aimless might be a better word to describe him, he was aimless in life and still hasn't found his meaning in life.

First we must acknolodge 2 truths.

The first one is that LQ is weird and absurd.
She came looking like a street/jungle child at 13/14 yo and was completely lost, when it come to who she was, what she wanted to do, she lacked belief in the ES, it's institutions as well as in her peers and herself. She even lacked belief in her mother and in the very concept of romantic love.

She was empty, devoid of meaning and she knew it, so she looked for meaning and belief, in herself, her friends, her family.
She was driven beyond words, always trying new arts, weapons, training freneticly and going on tribulations constantly. She even tried and succeded in forging a bunch of ties and friendship even if it started from a mercenary perspective. She also started repairing her relationship with her mother. And she find out who she was, what she wanted to do and how she was going to get it.

She is Ling Qi, a vassal of Cai, an artist, spy/thief, diplomat.
She want to help Renxian unify the ES even if that work will never be finished in her life time.
She's going to use Communication to create a Community or Communties with shared culture, reformed/new weilu, and a new provincial identity. She also want to maintain and protect that community.

She has gained meaning and through her drive in that search for meaning she inspired many people to found out what they wanted to do or to grow (Han Jian, Gu Xuilian, Cai Renxian, Bai Suzhen, Li Suyin, her mother...) and discouraged, hurted a few (Chu girl, Fan Yu, Renshu worm).
And she did all that in ONLY 3 YEARS.

The second truth is that none of her potential romantic partners are or were bad or particularly lazy, no they are normal in that they are late teenagers/young adults who still don't know what they want to do and have many decades to found out at their rythm. Except they want to be with Ling aim for Cyan at 20 Qi, who figured all that out and is still figuring it out at max speed.

So have they found their meaning, to be an equal match ?

Ban Qian is a merchant, craftman. His ultimate goal is to become a season themed spirit idol girl band Manager and record sellers, improving his sound recorder talisman/jade.

We know who Meng Dan is, even with his short appearance, he is a historian, he wants to learn, explore and spread a lot of ancient history. He wants to support his grandmother and LQ in spreading the new weilu movement with said knowledge.

We knew that Gu Tai was an explorer and wanted to developp his barony by adventuring and exploring ancient ruin (for loot not history)

Bai Anxi, it's too soon to tell.

Xuan Shi did progress and worked on himself a lot, he is an interresting character with a lot of potential.
But we don't know who he is and what is goals are despite knowing him the longest. We could say that he abondoned his former goals of finding happiness and meaning through some adventurous love but we still don't know what his new goals are, what is his meaning. Is he a builder ? A protector ? A navigator ? An adventurer ? What does he want, beyond LQ and a family.
I could see a XS who tries to incorporate part of Polar confederacy cultivation in his own to create a castle/city to wich he is bound. Or XS being the first to create a luminal boat and sailing the luminal like the sea and exploring it... (didn't XS mention that during the WS exploration ? )
We do need to watch for XS futur developpement to see what his meaning/life goal end up being. We might learn it next chapter even But as of know he is not the best match for LQ.

Sorry for the brick wall

Unclear if the voting window has also been pushed back, but it hasn't been called yet soooo...

Xuan Shi hummed in agreement. "This one looks forward to walking at your side, Miss Ling is never short on adventure."

"I'll look forward to that too, and not only for walking at all," Ling Qi chuckled weakly. "Xuan Shi…"

He tilted his head as she trailed off.

"I will be glad to have you here whatever ways you want to walk. I hope we can seek out secrets together again," She chose the words with difficulty. Some things were harder, despite the far lower stakes.
"A-ah," Xuan Shi said, blinking slowly. "This one would be honor… most pleased to tread the winding ways at thy side again."

I believe this is the last time the two of them discussed romance in any way. And the reference to walking makes me want to pick this option, just for the raw cheese factor:

[X] We could could walk the hill trails, and see the geysers

It's got walking, you see!

As for people calling Xuan Shi aimless, I think maybe his understated tone is making his declarations slip from memory. He's not aimless. Xuan Shi is a traveler and seeker of stories, and he has very deliberately chosen the paths and tales of the Southern Emerald Seas over others.

Remember what he sacrificed to Grydja- an idol carved under the light of the Guiding Moon herself, in the shape of an unidentified maternal figure. Xuan Shi wouldn't have let slip the very legacy of his birth, that had caused so much of the hardship that shaped him and the yearning for more that defines him, if he was "aimless". He is where he is in life very deliberately and for a purpose.

The fact that he's managed to synergize his goals with duties to his clan and the Argent sect, by acting as an observer, doesn't mean he's just going with the flow. It's just the smart play. Meizhen's been doing the same thing with turning her attachments in the Emerald Seas into a whole career path. In the end, both of them are selling a pitch to their clans to stay where they're at long-term, and they're both acting on strong motives to do so.

I'm happy either way, to be honest. Maybe if we go to the lake, Xuan Shi'll share some recipes for aquatic plantlife. He doesn't like fish, after all. (Don't tell Snowblossom.)

Speaking about husbandos though, it's interesting what things they have in common. There's familial alienation with Bao Qian, Xia Anxi, and Xuan Shi. Kinstrife of varying freshness looms over Meng Dan and Bao Qian. Xuan Shi and Meng Dan's story and history focuses, respectively, have a good amount of overlap. Parentage is a sore spot for both Xia Anxi and Xuan Shi. Bao Qian and Xuan Shi are craftsmen, while Meng Dan and Xia Anxi slot into scholarly classification more cleanly.

I guess what I'm really getting at is they should all be friends. Xuan Shi and Bao Qian (and Dong Fu) should make friends in the rear echelon of the war effort. Meng Dan and Xia Anxi should make friends in the Xin'an observatory.

We should also meditate on how good a match Sixiang is for all of them. The boys with anxiety about their place in the world? Sixiang wasn't even sure they wanted to exist! Bao Qian the music fan? Sixiang's literally made out of artistic creativity. Xia Anxi the astronomer and musician? Sixiang is the manifest fragment of a celestial body and the arts and they even appreciate lyrics (unlike Ling Qi). Our vagabond dreamer of a turtle and fan of stories Xuan Shi? Sixiang is a thing of aspirations, fleeting fancies, and the tales people tell themselves and others- with storytelling being as old an art as language itself. Speaking of the old, how about our well-humoured historian? Well, Sixiang was woven together from a myriad of liminal sources, with some of those bits and bobs being remarkably old and perhaps even more intriguing because their actual veracity is unclear.

Xuan shi might be a wonderer but that doesn't mean aimless. Wondering in itself is one of his aims. And the claim that LQ and XS have no chemistry is bullshit. There is a lot more to romance and chemistry than a silly banter or the ability to trade some quips. Xuan Shi is the one LIng Qi is most comfortable with and the one she trusts most out of her current husbands IMO. Trust is a far more important metric in both chemistry and relationships.

I also feel like XS is the candidate Ling Qi has shown the least interest in, or the one she has shown the lest chemistry with. I'm not talking only about her finding him attractive, though that's definitely a part of it. She has had much better reactions to the advances to Meng Dan or even Bao Qian.
I definitely agree with that. Just about the only guy on the list I feel like she has NEGATIVE chemistry with.

No Zheng (with a Zheng-standard philosophy) is ever going to be on the list. Way too inherently incompatible with her personal wants and positional needs.

I don't know that Ling Qi really has chemistry with any of her potential paramours, simply because she's only just coming out of her shell. I'm also not really sure how she has negative chemistry with Xuan Shi in particular, unless you count her current level of comfort and familiarity with him as a "friendzoning" or something. (Please read the quotation marks as me doing finger-quotes here, for the proper experience.)

Fire and lake, purgation and preservation, the fragments of the old fascinate.

So walking to the geysers will enhance his new project in "purgation" so... the system can maybe vent qi it's absorbed before overloading? It can use dispels and purge bad effects?

Lake as preservation, maybe much more classic defense protection. Maybe with an illusory effect? Something to reflect or mislead?
