"But it pinches so good," Sixiang shot back in a faux breathy voice.

Ling Qi swatted them on the back of the head. "Hey, whatever that was. Too much."

"Awh, fiiine."

Xuan Shi had unfortunately frozen stock still, dark color rising on his cheeks. She was concerned for a moment, before he shook his head violently, causing Xuanji to squawk and flap her wings for balance. "This one would examine the the arrays please. Cold stone is no open air and constructed wood, the components will not be efficacious."

He still sounded a little choked, and was absolutely avoiding Sixiang with his eyes.
Hmmm, I'd already had the thought before, that one of the few ways that Sixiang and Ling Qi could actually get romantically involved without screwing up the politics of LQ's marriage prospects, would be if they could somehow find an official husband candidate they were all willing to form a quiet throuple together with. Which is understandably difficult, especially with how rarely Sixiang engaged with other people outside of Ling Qi's head until recently.

But now though… *Narrows eyes speculatively* I can maybe see this as a faint sign that Xuan Shi could be swung that way, if further interactions between him and Sixiang are developed.

Any romantic relationship with Sixiang was always likely to wind up polyamorous. Six's personality and preferences just strongly lean that way, and I and others have mentioned as much previously. I do agree that this is the first evidence that Xuan Shi might be able to be convinced to go that route, though.

Now, that's not necessarily to say that's something we should pursue, just noting it as a possibility.

"Once this is done, will you accompany me out for the day. I was thinking that…"
God is good, and just, and kind.

What Xuan Shi is still missing to be a great husband candidate is a defining project or goal that is aligned with Ling Qi's Way. If he takes inspiration from the Polar nations I could see him building a "castle" to protect "his family" in both a metaphorical and literal sense. That could shape him deeply and hook into Ling Qi's community insights.

They seem to like each other well enough, both want adventure, both seem to want a family, have compatible personalities, communicate, and their families (such as they are) seem to get on well enough as well. Ideally Xuan Shi would make some more inroads with Ling Qi's friends, but they're already neutral to positive on him from our student council days, so that isn't a major impediment either.

I think Xuan Shi and Ling Qi could build a very solid relationship together.

I certainly hope so, at this point that's kinda the deciding factor for me regarding who I'd like to see Ling Qi pursue. Six overdramatically whining about how both their partners are so proper and repressed also sounds quite cute.

It had also acquired a new occupant, or rather, she had outgrown the little hidden shelf beneath the brim, and had claimed the top of it. The little bobbing chick had rapidly sprouted up into an imperious hen. Xuanji was a fine, sleek specimen with lustrous black feathers, shading to midnight blue at their edges and a sharp hooked beak. Her comb was a stark blue white shade, a shocking splash of color. But though she was much less plump than the farmyard hens Ling Qi was familiar with, she was still, unmistakably a chicken.

She was also already in the second realm, despite not being more than half a year old.
Chickens remember that they were raptors once.

Also, terror-chicken being all dutifully protective daughter is adorbs

"Oh buzz off cuz, most us aint into jamming ourselves between dead wood and gears," Kongyou's voice oozed from the shadows in the room, distorted and warbling.

What exactly was untoward about pinching, she wondered.
Xuan Shi is clearly much more in tune with his sexual aspect than Ling Qi is with her own.

At this point... I almost expect "that whole romance and sex thing" to be one of the things she abandons along the Way.

Wrote out a huge thing but I feel like I communicate better in memes.

When I get home from work… Ling Qi =/= Miquella. Don't let the poor thing abandon her husbandos.

One issue is that Xuan Shi also has a mind-passenger... and that foursome seems like it could get messy.

Also, entirely independently, I feel like Sixiang is better as a (incredibly close) platonic connection rather than a romantic/sexual one. Making it romantic would add a dynamic that... I feel like it would actually push them further apart, rather than drawing them together. Now, there's an entirely valid question of how close we should want them to be, but when adding romance to a relationship causes it to reduce in closeness, that's generally going to bring some ugliness along for the ride.
