Ling Qi swallowed hard, and then tentatively reached out. Silk squirmed and threads spun out, a thin glove forming over her hand as she grasped one of Shu Yue's pieces. A slender, high necked vase, glazed in splotchy inexpert white. Even under Qiyi's instinctive shielding it felt unpleasantly cold and damp to the touch like it had never quite finished firing properly. Despite that it solid, and as she drew it closer she could hear the whisper of clinking chains from within.
Of all the pieces here it was the one which both drew her enough with familiarity…. And did not repulse her with an instinctive disgust and anxiety too much to touch.
"You sure she really needs to mess with these things? Like we are supposed to be having a good time still you know," Sixiang said, crossing their arms. They edged away from the table, looking at it like a human might a heap of rotting trash.
"If we are to delve deeper, yes," Shu Yue said, tapping their fingers together. "That one… it is naught you do not know, but seeing it, feeling the
grudge which called me to them. Understand it, and we will have a place to begin."
Ling Qi gingerly drew the vase closer to her chest, it was at once as light as air and staggeringly heavy for its size. She glanced down, looking into its depths and…
Shu Yue's hand was pressed firmly over the open top of the vase.
"Not here, and not now. Sup lightly, drink lightly, in a space of your comfort and choosing. Not this place, my studio suites me, not you."
LIng Qi pressed her lips together in a thin line and nodded. "Not tonight then?"
"No. Go, return home, rest make merry work, and then when you feel yourself fortified, a look into the dark," Shu Yue agreed. "Tonight… this conversation is enough for you to ponder."

Ling Qi did not look back down again as her teacher with drew their hand. The distant sounds of clinking and the wispy scent of cheap perfume did not leave her nose. "Yes, teacher. Will it be safe to use a storage ring for this?"
"For your return trip? It should not do damage," Shu Yue said, considering. "Remove it when you reach your chambers."
Implying it definitely wouldn't be okay if she left it there. Ling Qi let out a breath. She knew storage rings involved some degree of liminality to function so it wasn't too surprising that something like this could damage a common one.
"Well, I guess I knew there was gonna be some glooming up," Sixiang sighed. "You gonna want me around when you take a look?"
"Please."
She was already considering when she might do it, the new year was fast approaching… and Bai Meizhen would be returning soon, along with the Bai delegation to the wedding.
After reuniting with her best friend, she was sure she could handle a look into the dark, without letting the gloom cling on too much.

The days following were a whirlwind of activity, leading into the years end, which would mark the beginning of the lengthy ceremonies and preparations for the day of the wedding itself. She lost count of the theater managers and troupe speakers she met with, getting a feel for which would best alongside Meng Dan, hearing their proposals for shows written about their triumph at the Southern Summit.
At this stage it was only drafting, and putting forward basic sketches for costuming and scene setting, but she could tell already that her correspondence was going to grow an order of magnitude from her time here in Xiangmen.
It wasn't bad of course. She even enjoyed it, the little insights she gleaned, who was genuine in their desire to portray their success, who was angling for favors in connection to their main patron, where those lines changed throughout an interview…
But she was still glad to finish it, the day before the new years, when the great procession of scale armored warriors and attendants climbed the great tree, the arrival of the delegation of the Bai.
…It was extremely ostentatious, but she supposed that was only to be expected, the way the carriages and wagons laden with cultivation reagents and other wending gifts took over the main thoroughfare leading to the palace for hours and hours on end. In tumult of it all she hadn;t even been able to senses Meizhen among the Bai delegation, observing from a distance. The aura of the Ambassador, the simulacrum of Bai Suzhen and all of their guards was simply too overwhelming, making it seem to her senses as if a vast white serpent was simply climbing Xiangmen rather than a whole procession.
Cai Renxiang was in the palace of course, receiving them, but despite her accomplishments, she
was still only a baroness. She had no business in a meeting like that yet.
But she was happy to prepare things for the less formal visit after.
"Ling Qi. It is excellent to see you in good health again."
She grinned at her friend, stopped just short of embracing the other girl. Even if she might be okay with that now, Bai Meizhen would probably be overwhelmed.
Also Xiao Fen might actually attack her and that would just be awkward for everyone involved.
It was well into the night now, the scattered lights of Xiangmen hanging above and below. It was quieter tonight, or at least felt like it, here in the garden of the Cai guest house, surrounded by its privacy wardings, They sat together in the stone pavilion beside the center pond, an array of drinks set out before them, from the steaming tea Renxiang was pouring to the faintly bubbling black wine in Meizhen and Xiao Fen's cup, to the softly crackling crystalline blue cider in hers.
"It's excellent to be healthy. I thought I might crawl out of my own skin, those months I was healing," Ling Qi chuckled.
"That would be quiet a feat, I would surely be under suspicion for releasing clan secrets if you had, so let us be glad it did not come to that," Bai Meizhen replied dryly.
"I am told the greater danger was the stoking of the embers in her dantian back to flame after the third time she attempted to 'have just a bit of cultivation'. I was sorely tempted to grant her physicians even more authority, but Madam Ling's scolding was sufficient," Cai Renxiang said cooly, adding a careful few dripss of milk to her tea.
"A mother's scolding can be more effective than any number of other voices I suppose. Even for one so reckless," Bai Meizhen sniffed.
"Foolish indeed." Xiao Fen agreed haughtily, managing to look down her nose in a way few could manage against Ling Qi.
"I recovered more quickly than any of the doctors anticipated, so who was really wrong here?" Ling Qi said, tilting her chin back defiantly.
"You."
"You."
She sagged under her friends withering glares, why was she under attack here!
Bad girl get scolded? Ling Qi bad. Get scolded. Be good! Let Qiyi make more pretty. They will forgive!
Even Qiyi had turned on her!
"And who is this, then?" Bai Meizhen said, glancing down at her dress, having likely sensed the fluctuation caused by the dress' communication.
"Ah, this is Qiyi. She awoke not too long ago," Ling Qi introduced, brushing her hand over the fabric.
Bai Meizhen's expression scrunched up. Ling Qi grinned. She did love telling people her names for the first time.
"I am told Sir Lin's reaction was similar."
"I would think so," bai Meizhen said, pinching her nose and sighing. "Honestly, Ling Qi."
"Qiyi likes her name just fine."
"Of course she does, such a spirit is essentially a child."
"Zhengui likes his name too," Ling Qi shot back, she wouldn't back down on this.
Her friend sighed. "...This is not a battle I am equipped to win."
"My, one of the great Bai clan, refusing battle?" Ling Qi teased.
"My Mistress knows when a conflict is beneath her," Xiao Fen said.
"Indeed, Bai meizhen said airly. Regardless, I greet Miss… Qiyi."
Hi! Qiyi hopes other pretty sister wakes up soon!
Bai Meizhen glanced down at her own gown curiously. "I suspect it may be some time, but thank you."
"We'll have to have another reunion when they do," Ling Qi said, taking a long drink, the feeling of frost forming along her throat was pleasant. "But you have to tell us how things went back home, all I;ve heard were some rumors about the Heir to the Bai clan…"
Bai Meizhen smiled thinly. "I am officially the daughter of Bai Suzhen, my mother has performed all the adoption rites. I am no different than a child of her body, legally. It has been… nice."
Ling Qi grinned happily for her friend. The small smile on Bai Meizhen's lips was practically an expression of giddiness for the taciturn girl.
"I am pleased for you. That is a great honor," Cai Renxiang said more quietly.
"It is," Bai Meizhen said, fighting down her smile. "I will say despite some misgivings…. It was good to return home for a time. I greatly enjoy the Emerald Seas, but I think it is important to return to your roots and… re-establish some things from time to time."
"Oh, now you're just being mysterious on purpose," Ling Qi said. "Just what did you get up too in Zhenjian?"
"That would be telling," Bai Meizhen said. "I merely spent the time reacuainting myself with my many cousins."
Ling Qi narrowed her eyes. "Now I know you're just baiting my curiosity on purpose."
"Regardless, it is rude to press a guest too hard Ling Qi," Cai Renxiang said, sipping calmly from her cup. She let a a small pleased sigh.
Her eyes narrowed further. "You already know more than me, don;t you, something that came up during the official ceremonies?"
A long sip, no response.
"I
will not be stymied. Your secrets cannot hide from me," Ling Qi said, crossing her arms irritably. Bullying. This was bullying. Even
Xiao Fen looked a little smug. Unacceptable.
"I'm sure your eyes will pierce the shadows afore long," Bai Meizhen said, laughing quietly. "Allow me to divert your attention then?"
"Dp you think me so easily distracted?"
"I brought you a gift."
Ling Qi paused, raised a finger, and then lowered it. She fought back a smile. Honestly, even if it was only for a little bit, it felt like a carefree day at the Sect again. She put on a serious expression. "I shall allow it."
"How kind of you, Baroness," Bai Meizhen said dryly. "I only hope that my small gift does not offend."
Now Xiao Fen looked properly constipated again.
"I admit, I had some troubles deciding what to get… My first choice…"
"Cultivation drugs," Cai Renxiang said into her teacup.
"Yes, that seemed a bit impersonal, beside I know you are well supplied," Bai Meizhen chuckled.
"I sense my honor is being called into question somehow, even if I can't imagine why," she sniffed. As if one could ever have enough cultivation boosters.
Well, okay, there
was a certain point where it got inefficient.
"Never," bai Meizhen replied, gesturing and pulling on the contents of her storage ring.. "Regardless, I thought I might get something less fleeting…"
