Hmmm, I don't
hate SNR, but there's a lot of things about it that give me pause. The lake haven't fit great, some of the core concepts of the art (Reflections, Stillness) are absent or awkward for Ling Qi to cultivate, and the bits of the art that do fit Ling Qi pretty well(loneliness, etc) don't play that nicely with being a medium of protective influence inside of Ling Qi's philosophy.
I also don't share the enthusiasm for an astronomy-flavored reskin. It just doesn't fix a whole lot of the issues, I think? I'm on board with thinking it'd be a cooler aesthetic, but I don't see the improvement below that surface level change. It doesn't address the more fundamental complications. Plus, it's not like Ling Qi knows anything about astronomy or the night's sky. Her hair looks like it, but again that's just superficial.
No, if you look at the available projects, the translation that would actually make sense for SNR would be something like swapping out Lake for Dream. Instead of an immutable feature of the natural world that's larger than any human effort, which is how the Lake Hei metaphor in SNR currently works and how you'd expect a night's sky remodeling of the art to work, the liminal. It's also an unspeakably vast element of the world, but it's not divorced from human touch; it's defined by it. The meaning would be something more along the lines of the lesson passed to us by the Dreaming Moon back in that burning archive, that ideas can be destroyed, suppressed, discarded, but they can always be reborn anew. Much more in line with our current trajectory and musings, imo, though it's still a bit fiddly as something defensive we'd apply to allies.
There's kind of a big problem with that idea though? We're, uh, already kind of planning to do it?
Winter Hearth Resounding: Cold, Fire, Music, Boundary, Home, Renewal
Garden of Mists: You keep no hearth, but you do tend the garden. Kin and clan, parents and siblings, dreams of the future and trials of now. You have come to know the ways of boundaries and stories, told to keep back the night. You protect your own. Alter the WInter Hearth resounding Art, replacing the Fire Keyword with Dream and Music with Formations. +1 XP Community and Cycles. Advances Liminal Carver by 1. (0/5)
This project shifts WHR, which is a thematically protective art though not strictly an armor art, into being a Cold/Dream art touched by Cycles and heavily altered by Zhengui's influence. As I read it, the Cold mirrors the destructive/Renewal aspects of Zhengui's themes, while Dream would be our answer to the creative/Growth portion of his domain. Cultivating the art with him means mutual thematic exploration while bringing his kit more to the fore of the narrative, which is sorely needed and fits with the broader fief development plans, at least theoretically.
Now, this isn't perfect either. It's not an armor or direct protection art... probably on the latter point. There's Formations thrown in there, which potentially complicates all sorts of things.
But on a
character level, this is absolutely the "Protective Destruction/Creation radical art modification involving Liminal inspiration" plot thread we'd want to follow, because it's actually attached to anything that matters. There's Zhengui, for one, who is both a character in the narrative and would serve as a long-lasting anchor for art development/inspiration/relevance. Which is difficult to overstate in importance. Then there's the hardcoded endorsement of Community in the art/project, which means not worrying about thematic suitability for defending friends/allies. And as a cherry on top, there's the ghost(?) of his bio-mum, Kohatu, cruising around in the liminal who could potentially be tapped for high-realm spirit bullshit to straighten things out/give us a quality product.
SNR has the fatal flaw of not
mattering. It doesn't have a compelling or notable origin, it doesn't have a spirit sponsor, it doesn't have a training partner, it doesn't have a broader scaffold to facilitate its construction. Other issues can be explored, tinkered with, and hammered out, but it's a much taller order to solve a lack of narrative tools to do any of that with. SNR occupies an axis of development that simply isn't very integrated with the rest of Ling Qi's trajectory.
Plus, like, I alluded to it above, but I really don't think we could do two "Destruction/Creation Dream Art mods" while giving both a fair shake. So if we only get to do one right, let's do the one that's informed by, and informs, an important cast member with themes we'd get to look at closer and time we'd spend with him as a bonus.
Anyway,
