Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
This update! I am blessed! Growth! Courage! Insights! Dancing! Livestock!

These children are maturing little by little before our eyes and I am so proud. 🥲
LQ asserting herself with LZ, and they know where they stand, and it's just connected enough to trade. (Gotta get Ling Yu Nuan in on setting up details.)
Ling Qi acknowledging how she had hurt her friend, and learned from it, and apologized earnestly. Really, the best kind of apology.

Xuan Shi acknowledging his flawed, initially one-sided approach to romance. Deciding not to hide his continued interest in her, asking for a dance, and LQ NOT panicking!

*victorious air-punching*

Honestly, I love that thrill of "I AM EXCEEDINGLY NERVOUS BUT I AM SURVIVING AND MAYBE EVEN SUCCEEDING"

It's a very Grinning Moon feeling.

Ling Qi about to help out her juniors, with possibly minimal teasing? Love to see it.

The poetry reading does sound fun, but this gives Liu Xin more room to show off

I've wanted Ling Qi to reunite with the kids from the Caldera fight + the ones who like her at her and Wang Chaos meetups for a while...

I wanna know if this is the only chance at this party LQ is gonna have to talk to them

Really fun chapter! Qi (platonically for now) dancing with Xuan Shi was really cute!

While I do think that interacting with Gan's entourage is important and LQ would enjoy the poetry, the others will enjoy this more.

They will be more comfortable around people of relatively lower social status.

Fefe's friend must c continue to enjoy the beefcake that is Wang Chao, and I think Fefe herself would be more comfortable with weapon testing.

Plus, I've always liked Liang He so it'll be nice to see him again, especially after that Medicant Blade sidestory.

Finally somebody points out Ling Qi's tendency to keep apologizing to the point where it's a social faux pas in bringing up past mistakes. That's always bugged me she did that but if it's a personality thing I'm more ok with it.

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of how the Luo situation shook out here. Don't get me wrong, I like uncles, and I liked this dog-uncle the one time we saw him. But there's real meta and narrative reasons things were coming together to hand us a diplo summit team of 3rd realm young adults.

Luo Jie is probably, what, Indigo? Everybody else local was sending out bigshots. Maybe he's only Cyan, but that still leaves him as old and a person we've seen them send out for significant political events. The differential in power, experience, and position really limits the kind of interplay that's possible. By extension, that limits what we can do with the Luo clan itself.

Like, things like getting a demo of the Luo clan spirit contract arts like we did in the Wang Chao/Xuan Shi hangout? I doubt the context exists to get something like that with an old expert. The unassailability of Luo Jie requires superficial interactions. The power dynamic doesn't leave room for much texture or complexity, because the risks are essentially unknowable. And yes, I think Meng Diu is a similar risk profile, if not greater, but Meng Dan's existence offers a mitigating resource for us in a lot of ways.

It's disappointing, because we've always had an interest in the Luo as a thread, and this will limit our ability to get into their head or have a contact we can pressure at all. It's just... less.
Unfortunately Zhong is disliked enough that was never going to happen and it's awkward to just slot in a similar aged and powered Luo into the narrative.

I was in a hurry writing this, and kind of missed my own point.

Basic point is peers and near-peers generally have more narrative flexibility. You can go on adventures with them, spar, compete head to head over things, needle them for info on even-ish ground, they can take direct part in mutual efforts, and they can make mistakes. Just a lot more options open for stuff.

I like the Luo, find them interesting. Less flexibility in shaking information out of/on them, by losing a peer to do it through, is a shame, and a bit needless. Especially right after Ling Qi affirmed to herself she doesn't need to make friends to work with someone.

Feels like it was probably done to cut things down to fit in limited narrative space, which is fair enough, it's just unfortunate it basically comes at the expense of Luo engagement.

Preliminary vote, might change it later

We've done enough genteel stuff recently. I think it's time for a change of pace.

Here's a poem from another cultivation novel to make up for voting against a poetry contest:

"Oh great sea, you are made of water."

"Oh horse, you have four legs."

"Oh beauty, you have large eyes and a mouth!"

What was LQ apologizing for? As far as I remember the last time they interacted was with Li Suyin and making that introduction and things were good?
