Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Yeah, Ma Jun is the twin that got to Green. Seeing as Ma Lei is the one showing signs of failed Breakthrough in the update.

Were both Ma sisters in that round? I am unsure.

Also, the update was rough. LQ not knowing the competitors names really made it confusing and a lot of errors as well. The following bit was particulary confusing:
It took a few tense minutes before the thought which had come to her percolated through the other disciples in the arena. Gan and his fellow disciples stood serene on the sunlit mountain waiting for their challenge to be answered. It didn't take long. Multihued arrows shot from the mouth of a cave across the river toward the other third realm, and shadows resolved into a half dozen shadows resolved into figures dashing up the mountain as well, their weapons flashing in the light.

A tasseled spearhead blurred splitting three arrowheads and though the energies in them flashed, blasting the stone and earth to send the cliffside crumbling into the river, the spearmen emerged from the smoke running backward up the sheer cliff unharmed. His foes struck their cries drowned out by crumbling stone, their own weapons blurring.

One of the golden hands clasped behind Gan Guangli thrust forward, and the flashing spear became a falling meteor, shattering the weapons which it's edge. Further down the mountain, Ma Lei and other disciples fought against a growing, desperate swam of their peers, techniques and weapons burned and blurred through the air, tearing up the weedy flora and scraggly trees that clung to the mountainside. Four against a dozen or more, they fought ferociously, but they were still being pushed back.

She dismissed the idea as a bit of anxiety caused by her company and settled into her seat. Bai Meizhen sat on her left side and the two young men on her right. In this scenario Meizhen had told her, putting her at the center was something of an intimidation play. Not malicious really, but just… habitual to the Bai. Ling Qi retained her pleasant smile, and allowed a bit of her own qi to leak out, adding a real chill to the air to go with the spiritual one.

"The high air in the Wall is bracing, isn't it?" Ling Qi said idly, looking down onto the four tournament platforms and the green fields.

"I have found it clears the mind well," Bai Meizhen replied.

"I am sure it only takes some acclimation," Xia Anxi chuckled. He was seated beside her, and leaned imperceptibly away from her chill.
LMAO
Ling Qi the Human Air-conditioner: It's pretty chilly here isn't it!
Meizhen who knows exactly what's going on and is probably protected from the cold by her bond level anyway: I rather like it!
Xia Anxi the Snake used to very warm weather: *teeth chattering* I'm sure I'm gonna get used to it

So Petty I love it. What a power move.
Gan Guangli and a young man beside him, one of the twin sisters who had been her bodyguards last year, Han Jian and Han Fang, Lu Feng and two others wearing western colors, Xiao Fen and a tall, muscular girl who she felt she ought to recognize,
LMAO Qi literally forgetting the person she beat to get into the inner sect. Chu Song would be frothing at the mouth.
"My cousins don't do subtle," Sixiang drawled.

He turned on his heel, and she saw liquid gold gleam in his eyes as he clapped his hands together, and three further thunderous claps followed. The sun rose over the mountain, and blazing light obliterated every shadow and veil on the upper mountain, drawing startled cries from disciples who had been trying to hide. Her own stealth arts could have resisted that, but certainly it would be hopeless for a second realm.

Damn! He's such a good contrast to Qi even his eyes turned gold!
Gan Guangli's fist, his real one, snapped out and struck the air. There was an immense crack and for an instant, Ling Qi saw spiderwebbing cracks around Gan Guangli's fist, spreading through empty air, leaking spiritual power into the material world. The song transformed into a garbled screech of random sound, the haze dispersed like mist in a hurricane.

"Yeah you know that's how you interact with a song, just punch the melody till it stops sounding right," Sixiang grumbled with dissatisfaction.

More funny Xianxia dispelled.
"Good show," Xia Anxi said, amused. "It might be a bit crude, but I can appreciate some simple flexing."
That's what this update has been all about! Flexing!

Honestly such a lovely chapter I'm so glad we picked Gan! He is also such a great contrast to Qi being the impossible to miss mountain of Sun to our cold mists of the moon. CRX can really have a good team between Qi and Gan!

I just really hope there's a scene where Chu Song is brought up with Ling Qi whilst Meizhen is there, and she proceeds to struggle to not break down in laughter as it becomes obvious to her Ling Qi legitimately has no idea who she is.

Followed by a private scene of actual breaking down in laughter, I think we've only ever seen Meizhen do that once so far.

Best part is anyone who doesn't know Ling Qi that well would just think it's some sort of mean girl pretending lmao.

Better than fine even, Meizhen would get buffs from the cold.

That... was some serious power displayed by Gan Guangli. He is clearly going far in this tournament if this is any indication of his performance. I have to feel that he held some cards back for this fight, but binding with that Sun spirit and honing his own personal power clearly made a difference.

Like, just ripping that spirit beast (I assume it was a plant spirit beast) out of the ground. Shattering music by breaking its power in the Liminal realm. He's done a lot of work, and I am impressed.

Somebody took the Sun bursting through a mountain to ambush the Golden Commander Atop the Mountain PERSONALLY goddam.

How Dare They try and pull a Shishigui on our boy and expect he wouldn't tear them out root and stem. This was a classic course of blunt Power channeled through Imperial tactics. Tie up the enemy command, Boost allies so they may crush the rabble, then the Allies come back and tip the scale to breaking enemy command.

Ambush, Poison, Stealth and Illusion. BAH

"YOU WILL APPROACH THE MOUNTAIN AND LOSE IN THE SUN OR BE TORN FROM THE SHADOW AND PULPED IN THE SUN

THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE"

It was a sunflower spirit a lesser cousin of the one that Sun Liling has. He was fighting two scions from the Western Territories. It was their bad luck they tried to pull a Shishigui so poorly. His tactics are pretty anathema to such attempts.

If it hurts, it works.

..........Hm

Should I ship this now?

One thing I thought interesting in this update was the space GG put between him and his allies. He only engaged when the other high levels engaged, and minimized the time he was at personal risk. It certainly shows growth as a commander and calls back to Elder Zhou's comments about the head and body of an army.

I would like to highlight this line from Lao Keung:
"They do not resent him at all."

followed by Xia Anxi's response:
"He is their better," Xia Anxi shrugged.

Lao Keung is clearly aware that however things are "supposed" to be in terms of propriety and being proper, there is a reality on the ground that is different. Detecting Resentment is meaningless to a White Caste General who is their Better regardless and has their service regardless. If I had to guess though, it was likely a key weakness exploited by Sun Shao in his first campaign against the Bai. He mobilized the non-Bai through Resentment, and then exploited Red Python Resentment during the battles.

Now, like Xia Anxi, most upper caste simply would not care if there were Resentment or not. It's irrelevant to their obedience. Unless your foe is directly exploiting that minor fault to break cohesion and repeatedly isolate White Caste Elites.

This is where Bai Suzhen's clinical metal cuts and reforms come into play. Bai Suzhen is aware that it can be a weakness, and likely has assessed that logically it's something that needs to be addressed. Unlike her sister Meilen though, she cannot come to fully care and thus likely cannot fully articulate a response to the feeling of Resentment other than attempting to logic it away. Which would be explaining herself to those that are lesser than her. Which is likely seen as an incredibly shameful display of weakness.

Logically, this means that it's a task she will have to delegate. She was delegating it strongly to Meilen, but she was taken by the Throne/Peaks and executed. This opens a large gap in the smooth ascension of Bai Suzhen the Reformer who wields the word Prosperity, and gives ample opportunity for the Conservatives to win and thus allow the Bai to fall victim to proud isolationism and generalized stagnation which the Peaks/Throne of An would have loved to enable the Bai to inflict upon themselves.

Unfortunately for Sun/An/Jiao every piece on this Go board is a sentient actor (even the ones you cannot see or don't exist on the board yet) and the plans of An and Jiao were purged by the meteoric ascension of Cai Suzhen, the continued adaptability of Bai Suzhen, and the choices of the Empress.

Virgin Whatsherface: "You took everything from me."
Chad Ling Qi: "I don't even know who you are."

A moment later, blazing golden radiance showed through the cracks in the stone and a tremendous golden hand erupted from the earth, dragging with it a mass of green flesh, spasming roots and tendrils. The hand squeezed and the knot of flesh at its core split apart like a rotten melon, spilling out two figures.
Let's say, hypothetically, Gan Guangli grabs you at zero percent damage...

Two more golden hands, and two fists of flesh struck the plant wielding young man all across the body.

Within two seconds Ling Qi had lost count of the punches thrown, within three, Gan Guangli and the westerner had struck the earth in a plume of rockdust, and the sounds of striking fists did not stop.
Wait, is GG doing a fucking Stand Rush!?

Well. I voted for Second-best Snek, and I do still dearly love that tiny dread goddess... but I have to admit that I cannot bring myself to be displeased by the results of having lost that vote.

The Wraith of Tonghou
yrsillar in discord said:
in all seriousness if I was actually thinking of writing that timeline, Ling Qi probably wouldn;t end up a gang leader or a bandit. She'd probably end up as an extrmeely dangerous vampire thing straddling the line between cultivator and spirit.

the nastier side of the grinning moon is much more adjoran-esque yes as seen in Jiao's interlude

but yeah basically nasty grinning moon is total, absolute freedom

freedom from restraints

freedom from society

freedom from bonds

freedom from identity

First off, this omake references a patron sidestory. Nothing major imo, but enough that if you want a completely spoiler free experience then feel free to ignore this post.

Just your friendly reminder that cultivation can be absolutely horrible in this setting, lol.

The Wraith of Tonghou

They say a wraith haunts the alleys of Tonghou City.

Naturally the stories surrounding such a creature are as varied and abundant as the gemstones in a noble daughter's jewelry box.

"—child of a noble and a commoner, cast out onto the streets she starved to death and has returned to—"

"—goes after the greedy and corrupt, she's a protector for those who have—"

"—monster, I saw what it did to Cheung. H-he—It was like he was left to bake in the sun, shrivelled like a grape-and his eyes, oh his eyes—"

"—for the night. You can head home tomorrow, early, when the sun is out."

"Come now my sweet, you don't really believe that garbage about 'The Wraith of Tonghou' do you? Nonsense! As if the City Lord would—"

For many the wraith was an exciting tale to gossip about around the drinking table or sewing circle. It was a tale used by mothers to scare their children into being good boys and girls. "Be good or the vengeful spirit of Tonghou will come to gobble you up!"

But The Wraith of Tonghou was very, very real.

The being had a name once, but it had been freed of such a shackle.

It was free of all shackles now. Free from the numbing cold, from the gnawing guilt, from the disgusted, hate filled eyes, and from the desperate, grasping, ever ravenous need of the streets.

It was free, free to do as it pleased. And do as it pleased it did.

Its moods were mercurial. Benevolent one moment, cruel the next. A freezing child alone and forgotten in an alley may awaken to find themselves wrapped in a warm quilt. Or a hungry beggar's meager belongings may be stolen for no more reason than it felt the urge to.

Yet, it cherished nothing more than freedom. Freedom for itself was paramount of course, but it wished for all beings to be as free as it was. And as such, it did its best to provide freedom wherever it could.

If it could satisfy its hunger while doing so, well, it was free to take advantage.

Tonight, it stalked such a man, one who took freedom from others.

It remembered enough of its mortal life to understand what the man it followed was. He was a moneylender. A man who creates artificial chains to bind those without. He wraps them in those chains until they can't move, until they are like the puppets the children of the city enjoy, until they are no longer free.

No more. Tonight she would shatter those chains.

It advances from shadow to shadow, avoiding the dim lamp light with the ease of an experienced predator.

And from those shadows, it observes. Dark, pitiless eyes watching, waiting, patient.

The moneylender turns down an alley, an oft taken shortcut—a mistake.

Dark pitiless eyes crinkle in a humorless smile.

The moneylender shivers as an unseasonal chill crawls along his spine. He turns quickly, instinctively expecting someone's gaze to be on his back. He sees nothing.

Dark pitiless eyes focus, calling on the shadows to blink forward. Cold and cruel, those eyes have more in common with a cat playing with its prey than any human.

The moneylender turns back around, ready to chide himself for his weak nerve, but he freezes, the instinctual primordial terror of prey overtaking him.

His eyes widen for the last time as they meet dark, pitiless eyes.

"My Lady," started the mountain of a man, his golden hair shining as if the midday sun was reflecting off of it, "does this task not seem below your station?"

Across from the man sat a diminutive woman with sharp, severe features. She sat straight backed and proud, dressed in a gorgeous gown cut to allow her a full range of movement. She clutched a teacup in her hand as her eyes remained closed, ensuring she properly savored the flavor of the tea. After a moment, once the tea's flavor had fled her senses, she responded, eyes remaining shut. "My revered mother has assigned this task to me, and for all that my sister's star has been rising, my honored mother is not one to show her displeasure with this sort of task."

"My Lady! I—"

"I know it was not your intention to imply such, but I trust that if my mother is sending me to handle this matter it is because she has knowledge that my talents will be uniquely needed to handle the situation."

The large man dipped his head in acknowledgement at his Lady's words.

Thinking that was the end of it, the man sat back in his seat, preparing himself for the rest of the journey.

"Though…"

"My Lady?"

"…I assume your memories of my mother's apprentice Yue Shu remain vivid?"

"Begging your pardon, but I do not think I could forget such a meeting if I lived a thousand more years."

"Yes. Quite apt." The man waited patiently for his liege to continue her thought, watching as her eyes remained shut in contemplation. "I believe this assignment could be an opportunity. I believe mother sees shades of similarities in such a creature however distant the likeness."

"You believe your mother wishes you to recruit this... creature?" The hesitance at such an idea showed in the big man's tone.

"I think there is a place in this world for all things, although not all things wish to go into their place."

"And if this so-called Wraith of Tonghou does not fit into its place?"

At his question the stiff posture of the woman became somehow even straighter, and for the first time during the conversation, her eyes opened. They were portals to the stars, filled with a harsh, burning light. And as if her eyes had been a gate locking the light inside of her, it burst forth, a corona of light framing the women, allowing no shadow to exist in her presence.

"Then for the safety and prosperity of the Emerald Seas, this spirit will face the swift justice of the Cai."

So, this was inspired by a WoG over on the discord, quoted above, but it's essentially a darker path Ling Qi could have walked. And part of that for me was showing how other characters could have been affected by her absence. I might have made Ling Qi too dark, but I felt the point would have been lost if I tried to keep her as, well, Ling Qi.

Anyway, what happens from here on out can be left to your imagination.
