Man, it's weird seeing everyone turn on the Sect. Up until this post, barring the jerks who comprise some of our peer group, we like and or at least respect all the Elders we've run across as well as Cores. Now everybody is an incompetent.

Saying that, this is now a diplomacy thing, not a military thing and we have the heir to our duchy as our liege we might as well take advantage of it.

side note: we really should have Ling Qi carry some level-appropriate healing and Qi replenishing pills.
We did, it's called a Ruan Shen

Not really gonna jump on the Sect is incompetent bandwagon, but I do think whatever consequences not telling the Sect first will bring, our glorious overlady can deal out much worse.

Yeah

The continued strange lack of any visible anti-nomad doctrine aside, and the weird demographics, the Sect has actually been fine here (even if they're uninterested in anything other than killing barbarians). Their plan was solid, and was working fine. The sudden starstone interrupt was out of left field.

[X] Catch the Elder's attention, and speak of the strange encounter.

I don't know that not explaining things would be entirely beneficial. The Sect's response could very well change, if it knew that one of the tribes in attendance had reason to be less hostile, as well as a pre-existing relationship with a Sect-affiliated spirit. Sure, they might get aggressive in ways we don't want, but then again they might... not?

Also I feel like being a little contrary today.

I dont really see it as turning on the sect. I also dont actually think the sect is incompetent.

If we look at the chapter, then LQ actually reported her 'dealing' with the White Sky woman. The only detail missing seems to be that we have received an iron token from the woman. That might be a bit strange, but overall it isnt such a big deal in itself.

Also, the report to shenhua would be right away, not just in the far future, so to me this vote about who learns this (currently) minor info first. And we chose the Cai route, so it makes sense to me that she gets first dibs.

But i am still open to arguments for why reporting to the sect first would be better.

We dont really owe any lealty to the sect. And anyway, if we have to risk angering someone the choice is obvious.

We're with the sect for another year and a few months. We're subjects of the Cai for our lifetime.

Oof. I'm pretty sure the way the wind is blowing is more interesting and would make for a better narrative, HOWEVER, I don't think that voters necessarily get why yet and I want to later down the line say: this was all foreseeable.

So. Look, if we were just kicking this up the chain of command then the assumption is we trust our superiors to make the right decision.

If we are trying to hop the chain of command then that means we trust our own judgement more than we trust that of our superiors'.

That being the case, what is our game plan here? Have momma Cai fix everything? Recall our Liege is CRX, she who loves the Law - in both word and spirit. Recall too that Momma Cai was forged in the fires of Ogodei's attack and that her enmity for the barbarian tribes is probably only eclipsed by her enmity towards those who would frivolously spend the lives of their soldiers in countering that invasion. I find it, hm, likely that either a) she will not be the bastion of rationality about this OR b) she will understand (in a way she understands little else) how much her people hate the barbarian tribes.

Either way it will mean that she will not personally move to fix this. The political cost of seeming to be a light touch on the matter of barbarians will be too high.

So. Who is she going to delegate to help take care of this genius idea?

Chances are high that if she is open to the idea at all, it'll be us. If we trust our judgment so much, put your money where your mouth is.

Now, this might not be how things end up playing, but in the broad strokes, I think it's a plausible assessment.

This really isn't us concealing anything from the Sect; they know what happened, at least mostly, already. This is us deciding whether we want to take the time aside right now to proactively discuss the matter with the Elders.

In general, I feel people are overplaying the 'barbarian sympathizer' angle a bit. Divide-and-conquer is a pretty basic military principle, and indeed historical China applied it quite a lot to the steppe nomads. Whether this is the correct moment to point that out to the wounded Sect is another question, though.
