Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

So happy for Meizhen taking such positive steps in her life. I'm kind of worried about Ling Qi's heart demon though. It sounds like we may have a real issue if we can't all somewhat agree on what her domain or dao path going forward will be. If we keep picking insights to maximize tactical gains we'll end up as the most powerful Green cultivator who has crippled their path to Cyan.

Holy shit, it's the Girl Talk episode.

"You have been quite the butterfly recently," Meizhen said dryly, entering the worn down circle of foundation stones. "Beast, inform me where you have hidden the real Ling Qi."

"Ha Ha," Ling Qi said, saying the sounds flatly.

A classic for a reason, though an unusually apt reminder of the time that Meizhen thought Qi was dead and was quietly devastated over it.

Ling Qi huffed. "You've improved more than I have, I barely managed to stumble through a dinner without making a total ass of myself. But you," she gave her friend a sidelong look, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. "You've had success." Tinkling laughter, Sixiang's laughter drifted on the wind.

Meizhen's eyes flew open wide, and her cheeks pinked. "What, how did you…"

"She didn't, she's guessing," Sixiang's disembodied voice chuckled. "We just heard that Bao Qingling came to her cousin in a fluster."

Hah! It's true! Meizhen you are amazing!

"Wicked girl," Meizhen hissed, turning her face away. "Is that why you invited me out to this ruin?"

"Partially," Ling Qi said, still grinning widely at her friend's flustered expression. This kind of thing… she was still deeply wary of it in her heart, but Bai Meizhen was strong, no matter what happened, she was sure that Meizhen was in control. "So….tell me what happened."

Yes, they are two high school girls with one interrogating the other about every detail of her big romantic confession. I love it. My imagination is picturing a lot of squealing on Qi's part as Meizhen's face struggles between giddiness and embarrassment.

"I do not see why I should share such private matters," Meizhen huffed, refusing to look at her.

"C'mon, I'm sorry for teasing," Ling Qi cajoled. "But please, I have to know how you managed to get that girl to notice what you were trying to do."

"...She is not half as dense as you," Meizhen shot back,.

Ling Qi recoiled as if wounded, and the wind echoed with snickering. "She's got you there," Sixiang said. Ling Qi shot the empty air a hurt look too.

"Now you're just being cruel," Ling Qi complained. "Please tell me?"

Meizhen finally turned to look at her, though her cheeks were still pink. "If you must know I-That is," it was bizarre to see the usually perfectly composed Bai Meizhen stumbling on her words.

Yesssss, this is good.

just- I was aiding her with the cataloguing of factors to the toxins which the Medicine Hall was studying, and conversation turned to issues of betrothal. She mentioned finding all of her suitors to be blithering irritants, and I concurred," Meizhen said.

It was probably a little weird that Ling Qi could picture that conversation so easily in her head. She remained silent, not wanting to interrupt her friends momentum.

"She then lamented that she could not get a match with someone as competent as I, and… I also agreed," Meizhen coughed. "I may have… complimented her as well and er… lamented that I was not in position to grow closer to her."

"And then what happened," Ling Qi asked, unable to help herself as she leaned forward.

"She told me to stop making fun of her," Meizhen said quietly, looking down. "I told her I was not."

Ling Qi almost winced at the high pitched squeal Sixiang let loose inside of her head, before the muse devolved into babbling about how cute the scenario was. "...She believed you?"

"...There may have been some convincing involved," Meizhen replied evasively.

"You kissed her," Ling Qi accused.

"I asked permission," Meizhen huffed. "Qingling… may have thought I was still jesting however."

It was only her familiarity with meizhen that told her how very tense the girl was. She couldn;t imagine how hard that must have been for her, after… "Congratulations, Meizhen."

I suppose Sixiang could be the giggling person in this scenario. Meizhen is smoooooth as butter.

"Sixiang has been trying to teach me to move more like they do," Ling Qi sighed. But I'm having a hard time of it."

"Sixiang is an immaterial spirit," Meizhen pointed out.

"Right, right, and I'm not at a level where i can replicate that," Ling Qi agreed, frowning at the worn stones. "Not for long anyway. We're trying to meet each other halfway.

Lol. "Sixiang has been trying to teach me to move like them, but they literally don't have a body, so it's pretty challenging".

Loved this chapter. So much great stuff.

Wang making a showing of perhaps the easiest social manipulation in green we've seen pushing him significantly closer to Social Cinnamon Roll territory.

Meizhen being amazing in dating and Life. Sixiang being amazing in reaction.

And, perhaps best of all:

So, Cast, how would you all describe battle?

Meizhen: "It is a rushing river of violence and terror, and to win means to control the flow and direct it against the opponent."

Renxiang: "It is a great debate, order must be sought beneath the chaos to understand the battlefield, such that each move by the enemy can be countered by the correct reaction."

Xuilan: "It is a raging conflagration, where you must seek the vulnerabilities of the enemy and use it as fuel for your own forces to explode forth in overwhelming power."

Sixiang: "It is the bloodiest of dances, countless participants pushing and reacting to each other, desperate to keep in step with the whole stage or fall completely."

Ling Qi: "It's a violent heist lol."

Truly incredible insight. Maybe even Art material right there. 10/10

You go, Meizhen! This is extremely cute.

As for the vote, I actually don't have a strong preference. We're hanging out with Meizhen either way, and that's the most important part.

I know everyone else is gushing about the chapter but...

Finaly... finally... we won't get dunked every time a tactical battle with someone moderately competent comes around.
Yeah, we just have to pretend large scale battles are actually heists. Make the opposing force think you are going to do something and then do something entirely different to achieve the objective. Violently.

Rather than thinking of it like a duel with a whole mess of people on either side, she should have been thinking of battles more like… very violent heists.
I suppose this is a fitting analogy given her background and skill set. The direction of learning also fits in nicely with us gaining more tools to make use of it with various ally and enemy relocation effects. Shame about missing athletics cap by 2 but I'm sure we'll get it later this turn.
She still felt slow.
On this note:
  • This turn's spirit roll was 23xp below average. With this, we're short an average of 387 xp to make it to G4 next turn as planned.
  • EPC bonus to spirit in the last 4 turns was 130-230, varying with the amount of stealth we engage in and secrets we uncover. This means that under a pessimistic scenario we'd still be short ~130xp from break-even, and ~200 from having a 99+% chance.
  • Getting our 0.2 multi back is worth ~220xp and would solve our problem, but it's hard to count on that happening.
With that said, our current options to hedge are:
  1. Invest 20 omake points over 2 turns to guarantee the outcome (would work but is expensive).
  2. Invest 10 omake points and use the extra AP next turn on Spirit (worth ~100xp) instead of PLR7 (less expensive but no PLR7 and risky if we have unexpected AP costs).
  3. Switch to AG over SSC for the turn (worth ~100 spirit xp but loses 66xp on UGM (no level 2), 124xp on SNR, and 105xp on MSS). Generally not worth the trade compared to just sacrificing an AP.

Basically if you've got omake points now's a good time to throw them into spiritual.
EDIT: thank you @Thor's Twin for covering us for this turn.

All this heist talk makes me feel like Ling Qi wil lend up training her family to become some sort of bandit group/ professional Phantom Thieves. You need some place infiltrated and a treaasure stolen? Come hire the Ling family's services. :3
