The Long Founding (Warhammer 40k)

abaddon seeing a hundred screaming faced horus lookalikes slamming face first into his ship's bridge windows with jetpacks blaring smushing them closer to the glass glaring at him

Abaddon: "This is a first."

I want to point out that we should probably consider marksmanship for the training, considering how much of a hassle getting into melee is from the back of a giant bear. Also because sniping deamons never stops being funny.

Iron Hands chopping their hands off, Salamanders have a ritualistic funeral where they burn themselves I think, Imperial Fists torture themselves with pain gloves, I think the Blood Angels drink Sanguinius blood? Though that might just be the Chapter Master...

Salamanders have metal as hell funerals. If I remember right, Their Brothers will Slowly lower the body of their honoured brother down on a Adamantium slab, With battle brothers lowering the slab via metal chains which are wrapped around their arms. They lower the Slab into the Lava of their homeplanet, and hold it their until the body has been completly sublimated by the lava, Enduring the heat of the chains they wrapped around their arms, And then Raising it up and out.

Now, Something can be said about it being horrific, Burning yourself like that. On the other hand, its a funeral right and enduring the pain of your planets flames, Branding the Memories of your fallen comrade into your arms even as they return to the fires of the planet they died serving, Is metal as all hell, and 1000% more valid then cutting off functional pieces of yourself because flesh bad m'kay.

Right? Salamanders are just the gift that keeps giving!

they also celebrate captain promotions by setting you on fire by having you stand on a spout that shoots up a pillar of flames

also apparently old salamanders about to die of old age are harvested of their geneseed and then walk out into the flaming deserts of nocture to just die in the flames of the wilderness?

The weird part is how the salamanders have enough marines dieing of old age that this actually became a tradition, Dante is the Oldest Non-dreadnought, Non-warp tainted marine alive, at 1,500 years old. Old enough that he actually started to show signs of age such as graying and wrinkling.

Early edition weirdness maybe?

Just to be sure, how many Training and Equipment slots do we have for this turn?
1 each.

Or maybe it's a minor Geneseed flaw that no one actually cares about? They just don't have as long of a lifespan. Still probably leagues longer than a normal human naturally has.

Either that, Or it's another sign that the salamanders are the OG best legion, What's that saying? Fear old men in professions young men die young? That would imply that the salamanders have a win ration so high that in the 10 millennia since the horus heresy, They actually had enough marine grow old enough to undergo this ritual... Which considering dante is getting wrinkles and Greying at 1500, Would imply that their was a decent chunk of salamanders who grew old enough it actually started effecting their abilities as Astarte's between the First founding and everything going even more to shit.

... Or it's a writer screw up who didn't fully consider the implications of what they put to lore and the editors didn't catch it.

Have we considered Dreadnoughts for the equipment? Champion Dreads is always a fun idea and the size of the Ultrabears means we might have Dreadnoughts riding on the bears.

The Golden Sons proved it could be done. We just have to do it again.

[] Plan: The Ashen Bears V2
-[] Chapter Name: The Ashen Bears
-[] Chapter Colors: Muted Red with Silver highlights

--[] Champions: It is common practice for champions to wear the fur of ultrabears who have fallen in battle.

--[] Veterans: The Ashen Bears will wear masks and half masks covering their cursed appearance and scars. Initially, the Masks are bare (bear) for Scouts, with more elaborate masks belonging to the older and more storied Space Marines.

-[] Chapter Symbol: Roaring Silver Bear facing left, wreathed in Red Flames on a Dark Iron background.
-[] Chapter Creed: "With Hearts Aflame, We Stand Against The Dark!"
-[] Chapter Battlecry: "We are His (The Emperor's) Burning Wrath!"

-[] Deepstrikes: More so than even other Space Marines, this Chapter has gained a mastery of the orbital strikes Adeptus Astartes are famous for.
-[] Extra Assault Packs: The Chapter has a great number of Assault Packs, letting them retain a greater number of Assault Marines in each Company.

Something that could be a cultural meme for this chapter could be the making and wearing of masks. Specifically in the sense of younger, newer marines having fairly plain, simple masks, but as you go up the hierarchy/veterancy, the masks get more ornate, until you can determine officers, champions, and old veterans simply because their masks are so extravagant. Just a thought, but it would make sense what with the whole burning off their own faces thing. Could even be them symbolically taking a new face, so to speak.

I was actually thinking that a practice that could come about from their facial immolation is to paint their faces over with the ashes of their burnt flesh, Kratos-style. But I could definitely see a practice of wearing masks as well.

People they already have apothecaries, all chapters have them. And they aren't burning their entire bodies just their faces. Adding more apothecaries to try to improve the issue doesn't seems like it would work since they would already be around for the ritual and anymore just runs into the 'too many chefs' in the kitchen issue.
Forgot about the giant bears? Those things will need apothecarys as well considering just how much dakka they will get sent their way, also taming those things can't be painless.

Either the apothecaries would already be doing that or they'd have dedicated serfs for it. We don't need apothecaries we need to double down on their legendary traits.

There is never a reason to have extra Chaplains, Tech Marines, or Apothecaries. Stop suggesting it. All Chapters need to have Jet Packs.

.... The bears are a legendary trait.
As for the apothecaries handling it.... No, that's specifically what better apothecaries is for: handling anything beyond the normal generic requirements of any basic space marine chapter. The bears are not part of a basic generic chapter requirement. As for veterinary serfs, that would require some extra support or close relationship to the planet.

-[ ] Apothecaries: This Chapter has extra Apothecaries among its ranks, greatly improving the health of the Chapter overall and raising the odds of Marines surviving severe injuries.
-[ ] Extra Assault Bikes: The Chapter has access to more Assault Bikes than average, expanding their capability in hit and run tactics.

Edit: I mostly stole this from Bobtheninja and Thatoneguy. Keeping these boys healthy and adding some extra bikes for their skirmish trait.

We already have apothecary's, every chapter has them. Just because we don't have more doesn't mean that they will all die out considering that if that happens odds are the whole chapter dies out.

They aren't a legendary trait. If people want to decrease how often our dudes are killed including the bears seems like it makes way more sense to go with skills that synegize with our actual legendary traits.

I cant imagine the absolute panic these marines would have if a blood angel ever fell to the black rage and started calling them Horus they would shit themselves thinking the blood angels know lol
