This is neat! Makes me wonder if it would be possible to make a combination desalination/electrolysis/hydrocarbon plant around a nuclear reactor. Looking at it though it might be better to just use hydrogen fuel cells? Hmm. Would need a source of carbon as well with just seawater as the input, though of we get the molten salt reactors that could maybe be a use for the brine? Ready access to a lot of salt could make thermal batteries for renewables practical as well…

Large ships like container freighters and carriers also benefit. Smaller things like cars, medium to small planes, and smaller boats (corvette and lighter) are all better off sticking with kerosene - through that too can be synethesized using nuclear power via the Fisher-Tropsch process.

To be fair, even medium planes might have issues.

USAF wanted a nuclear powered plane. They made a reactor, got it critical, and then started realizing a few issues.

Weight was shaping up to look like 600K lb, 205 feet long.

B-52, state of the art at the time, was 185K lb, and 159 long.

And they also found it would likely be too heavy to take off, leading them to consider just using light protection and staffing it with older crews. Also the engines uh, did some testing, and were releasing 360,000 Curies of rads over a few years or so of testing.

15 years of work, billion down the drain, and they didn't even actually have a plane to use it with.

It's not really feasible for aircraft. Industry and tranis are fine, but uh, small scale carries a few risks.

You would indeed use seawater carbon capture to supply your carbon. This was actually something they realized a few years back because they found that extracting it from the air required a very large carbon capture plant.

You extract the carbon, desalinate the water, electrolyze out the hydrogen, and combine the carbon and hydrogen.

One interesting bit of contemporary news relating to this talk of nuclear powered [x] is that back in February the Korean industrial sector and such signed an agreement to develop small modular molten salt reactors tailored for use as a marine powerplant on cargo ships.

Granted, making reactors small and modular is a process of gradual refinement in many ways.

Do you know WHY it took so long to do so? Because ITAR. ITAR has been the albatross stifling nuclear development for decades now because nobody wants to risk the US just... stopping all trade with them and blacklisting them.
 
I wasn't trying to suggest that 2023 was the earliest it could be done, so much as noting that it's happening in 2023.

Proooobably due to the energy crisis driven by the Ongoing Nastiness forcing them to consider if heavy fuel oil with its 100% risk of causing ecological degradation and interruptible supply is actually more suitable to their needs than the power of the atom and its maybe 0.1% chance of ecological degradation.

Just wondering when like now USA military is looking into hybrid engines, when our guys will what to try to go to hybrids but more earlier than USA of course.

    Wei Mai had been having that most sublime of unsettling experiences that she hated more than any other experience in her life: being finished with all work that could be done on the current day, with nothing left to do that would be productive or constructive for the people and workers of Guangchou and the world. Not in the sense that she had finished her paperwork or that all orders for the Military R&D section attached to Mingxiang were processed, approved, denied, or sent back for another round of review, or even cleaning her office, but in the sense that everything she could do was finished. She couldn't even really do things with her children; all but Ma Li, Bo Ni, and Chaoxiang were still in their schools due to various clubs or asleep, with the first two working on a "super private and secret project no grown-up can know of!" (as Bo Ni had helpfully informed her with the groaning of his sister) and the latter quietly studying in her room.

    Now, usually, on such a day, with nothing left to do, all her children either taken care of or occupying themselves with no supervision needed, she would go to her daily To-Do list and visit the last point she needed to do: her Stress Relief Husband.

    And with a pep in her step and a quiet hum in her mind, she had tried to do precisely that, only for reality to come crashing through the window and punch her in her heart and gut, cruelly eviscerating her plans for the evening. Mei (her eight) had come from school early with a mission: making a care package for the Lupi in Germany, roping in her father to help her pick out food that they could eat safely and what of her toys she should send for their children.

    So, with her current item on the To-Do list firmly relegated to the night, she offered her help (only to be declined) and kissed her youngest on her head (to her protest at not being a "baby" even though she would always be one to her) alongside her husband (who got a less-than-chaste idea whispered to him in a way that Mei couldn't hear) leaving her alone to do...nothing much of import. She could work out or train, but she had done her daily routine, and overtraining was harmful, or she could read up on some books she had put on the backbu-"-OINT IT WILL EXPLODE!!!" Ma Li screamed in delight, laughing in that tone she used when she saw something explode or go rapidly up in flames. A tone that put Mai on instant alert, her body moving before her mind fully caught up, leading to her knocking on the door to the siblings' room nine seconds later.

    "Ma Li, you better not be doing what I think you are doing. We had a talk about that!" Mai said firmly, though she didn't enter just yet.

    A moment passed, papers rustled, and panicked voices quickly hid something from her. "I am not doing anything bad!" Ma Li promptly called back, her brother speaking after her: "Y-yeah! We have nothing to hide! See for yourself!" Mai overlooked the whispered 'Idiot!' by Ma Li, entering the room. True to their words, they had nothing to hide...if one ignored the lump of blankets on Bo Ni's bed, she raised an eyebrow after she stared at the lump for several seconds, causing both to look down in uneasy embarrassment, yet none willing to break.

    "So...who will tell me what had you so excited?" Both twins looked at each other, one threateningly, the other timidly, a quiet conversation happening between the two before Bo Ni looked back at her and quickly raised his arm to point at his sister.

    "After the rockets on our mountain trip, she asked Big Sibling Wei to help her create a bomb to make a volcano explode again, making me draw the concept of it!"

    "Traitor!" Ma Li hissed, though both twitched back under their mother's now stern gaze. They shouldn't have bothered, for Mai's ire was directed not at them but at her future murder victim.

    Meanwhile, in the Mingxiang Experimental Development Laboratory Section:
    "Did someone else feel that sudden chill?" Wei asked, looking around while drawing their lab coat closer to themselves.

    "Now that you mention it..." an aide said, looking concerned as her breath began to fog in the room.

    "Oh shit, the seals broke! RUN!" The engineer responsible for the cryogenic raygun development team shouted, slapping down the safeties before hauling their ass out of the chamber, everyone else in tow.

    Wei could only sigh internally. "Stupid Blue Sky experimenters..."

    i find this very troubling, mass unemployment is a big problem, especially if our reputation is so low.

    What we need is to massively upscale employment opportunities with low/ easily trainable skills and generate money sinks.
    my proposals for this would be:
    • a shock effort of our vocational schools to employ electritians, plumbers, mechanics etc.(helps with our skilled worker issue)
    • create national parks and nature reserves.(extremely cheap and protects nature and access to green spaces)
    • vacation and tourism hotels/ industry(give our workers something to look forward to and easily employs many people )
    • Restaurants and teahouses (we could also use our newly founded CyPac to introduce foreign cuisine)
    we could also lower the working hours, give people more free time.

    the other alternative is to create absolutely massive public works like doing the dragon rail by hand rather than using excavators and equipment.

    we really NEED to start prepping for this because it will cause our economy to crash. it may very well be too late to escape without consequences, but we have a responsibility to mitigate them as best we are able.

    what about Alonzo Church, his theory is just as brilliant as Turing and mathematically equivalent.
    we could probably snag Noam Chomsky, he's a commie, and his work on language theory is foundational for compilers

    1) We need people to teach them. Probably means we need to go out to CyPac cap in hand for ourselves this time, and I'm a little bit surprised our super-duper public school system hasn't shown up yet but they've not gotten their first crop of kids through school yet.

    2) YES PLEASE ANOTHER PERSON ONBOARD THE GREEN GUANG TRAIN! It's been...mostly me for a long time.
    In the most-socialist period of the United States in OTL, the Civilian Conservation Corps did just this. National parks, nature reserves, and otherwise supporting as much green space as we've got sounds like something to jump on.

    3 and 4) CyPac Gastrodiplomacy? Culinary cultural outreach? I mean, it's a neat opportunity and while Thailand's got a bit of a jump on us there's no reason we should let them run unopposed.

    Pardon the rant a bit...

    My number one favorite thing about cultural globalization in the late 20th and early 21st centuries is food! So many different wonderful and delicious options. So many different traditions and people groups and ways of making food! Everybody's got their own spin on "we fried bread and put it around something savory and nutritious" because people are people, but everybody's also got their own things developed from the unique environmental and cultural elements of their homes! Pho is delicious! Ceviche is wonderful! Kebab can have a bright explosion of flavors!

    And we have the opportunity to make that happen ~20 years early with CyPac. I realize, SV is an internet forum and it's hard to really engage with smells and food through a screen and in a primarily-textual-medium, but globalization of food is such a fun and exciting CyPac possibility we would be remiss to ignore the tremendous benefits.

    If there aren't actions for 1-4, I'd like for there to be. I might actually be able to put together a plan this time around; I'd like to have some fun options on it to do neat cool things. All work and no play makes Guangchou a dull rainbow.
