Springtime of Nations II: A European Republic Quest

You know with italy failing at taking their colony maybe their slice of africa gets to mostly remain free since other powers moving in violates the agreement they spent a lot of time working on.

I am planning to include a plank for the next turn about setting up trade with eastern African nations in the hopes of supporting them against future colonial ventures.

Speaking of which, we should probably formalize our trade policy with undeveloped economies. The Ethiopian Empire might be preferable to the Kingdom of Italy, but only marginally. Empowering the people while not empowering the central government might be a delicate balancing act.

After all, how can our Republic in good conscience contribute to the formation of yet another class of bourgeoisie, who will grow fat off of exchanging the fruit of German industry for the coffee grown by their bondservants? 🤔

If we liberate Korea and Vietnam from France, surely they will reward us with some of their best and brightest.
I think we should train them by providing training and weapons. They will be indrotrinate by us and then we will use them to liberate themselves. Overt support will be very dangerous to us due to proximity of raj. So better use homegrown support to liberate them. We can use students from those countries and train them further while they in germany and sell weapons in a discount. it will certainly ensure our economic solvency remain intact and we can fine tune various issues with our weapons and their use in a simulated environment.

Also any plans for German Diaspora in other nations?

[X] Release Schnäbele with a full apology.

This is a humiliation and a catipulation to the demands of a foreign power. Which means it's perfect.
If the German people do not want war, they shall be made to want it.

[X] Hold Schnäbele pending further discussions.

The people voting for release are the lowest of the low. You're telling me that at first confrontation with the imperialists? You're just going to bend over backwards?

What do all the dead of the civil war mean? What do the dead in Poland mean? How are we going to go home and start debating amongst ourselves about how to beat liberate the world if we do not do it right here and now?

The economy? The army? Did we not beat Austria and Prussia all at once? If we can destroy the reactionary plague that taints France, the birthplace of our ideals, then the fruits of our labor shall be more than the price we have paid.

Grow some backbone! Stand up for Germany! For Liberty!

I know where my vote lies!

Frankly, the assumption that we would win a war against France for reasons that boil down to "Bismarck did it in real life" is almost insultingly reductive. As far as I can tell, our advantages aren't on the same playing field by either category or magnitude. Furthermore, our diplomatic standing would be unfavorable: we'd knowingly be provoking war on the basis of a flimsy conviction. I'm sure some vanguardists would find that appealing, to bind Germany to their bloodthirsty pyre, but reasonable minds should stay wary.

I think this is giving way too much credit to OTL Prussia. Most of the weaknesses France had at the time are still there.

I'm dead set against a war but because I really don't buy the analysis that says Britain won't be an issue.

All right, we're deadlocked with less than two hours to go. I'm calling the initial vote here. Run-off to come shortly.

CRISIS: The Schnäbele Affair of 1887 - Decision Point
What is to be done?

[] Release Schnäbele with a full apology.
The implicit agreement between nations is that foreign nationals traveling to other countries on official business are granted diplomatic protections. Regardless of the circumstances, if that unwritten tradition is to be honored, he must be released and offered an apology.

EFFECT: Crisis averted. Minor negative impact on national stability. France will likely be mollified and its war-hawks defanged. Relations with France and the Entente will improve.

[] Hold Schnäbele pending further discussions.
There is clearly tension between the Emperor and his Minister of War, and that tension could be useful. Delay a final decision on Schnäbele to allow the government to formulate a set of demands, or even just to let France's internal pressures continue to develop.

EFFECT: Crisis continues. Minor negative impact on national stability. France may or may not declare war and the French war-hawks will be greatly strengthened. Relations with the Entente will decline. Unpredictable further potential consequences with the Entente.

I'll leave this open for 12 hours, with an option for a further 12-hour extension if the votes are still coming in by then. Pick ONE option from the two provided. Please remember to be civil and thoughtful in your rhetoric at all times. Thank you.
