Ship of Fools: A Taylor Varga Omake (Complete)

Someone tell those lizards to stop cutting onions around me.

Awesome chapter, also we get the first of Dragon's children, Ramoth!

ANY ship those little facehugging bastards were on is a ship that should be nuked even if they get all of the humans out, I never trust one to not somehow pop up. Christ they set another AI up.

Weyland-Yutani must be the Umbrella of this universe, who would even think of using the aliens as weapons of war, setting them loose on any sentient life would be a war crime. I wonder if they are going to clear out that Predator temple that's full of aliens. Don't understand shooting inside a ship when you don't have to.

Newt is a lucky kid, I have ZERO shame at saying I would have left her lil ass on that planet when she was hiding in the grates and she wouldn't come out. She had the survival instincts of Lara Croft.

I am probably remembering this wrong, or it's Prometheus, but the temple in question got blown up by the Yautja.

"Newt?" she asked, wonderingly. The girl didn't let go, but she felt the head nod up and down in her embrace. She didn't realize she was crying until she saw a tear fall onto the top of Newt's head.
I'm a little disappointed that Newt didn't have Ripley's co-survivor with her here, namely Jonesy: Best Space Cat.

Dragon: (Looking at Bishop) Well, I can rebuild him. Faster, stronger. And it won't cost anything like six million dollars.

Chapter 23: Alien Resurrection
...
Metis' voice replied. {I've reached the bridge and disabled the watch staff. The staff installed motion sensors throughout the ship, presumably because the xenomorphs don't appear on normal life scans, at least not using this technology. I've got movement that matches the facehugger profile detected about one hundred meters north of your position.}
...

One thing I saw here and in other stories and always made me wonder: what does "North" mean when you are aboard a spaceship currently moving in space? The front? The star of the system one is currently inside of? Or is it more another way to say "in front of you", like "to your 12"?

Technically in at least one Alien continuity, Way U and everyone else who gets the idiot ball in Alien is being psychically manipulated by the Xenomorph Hive Mind, specifically the Queen Mother back on Xeno Prime.

Good chapter...

This wins a little bet I had with myself about how Ripley's 'family' was going to be saved by The Family...

You might want to talk to mpPIp about your use of the one-shot on the chest burst victim - as I understand it, yes, the damage might have been more than it can handle to save LJ's life, but, it has a fall-back mode for this situation, of dropping the patient into a suspended animation state, until enough resources are available (or help arrives). One way to tweak the scene would be to say Ianthe was working to ensure the one-shot had the resources to repair the damage (maybe she was drawing on a few tonnes of onions she's got in a dimensional pocket?), but, as always, YMMV.

I will admit I'm curious about who the local representative of BBFO will be in the Aliens Universe - maybe they'll subcontract the work to DracoTech/Ramoth? If not, does this mean they'll be looking for a local lizarding candidate? :)

Fore/Aft are North/South while Port/Starboard are East/West, at least that's what I would go with, though with Taylor and co living with dockworkers they should know the terminology for ship positions.

Going into stasis was described as a feature of the full symbiote that people like Amy, Danny and Lisa have. The one-shots are designed to fix what they can and dissolve.

I'm also going on the assumption that the aliens do a lot of damage, as being a host is portrayed as inevitably lethal. It has to be more than just the exit wound, as even though that is gruesome, it isn't more than a good trauma surgeon could handle with immediate attention.

It can mean whatever the people who agree to using a shared map want it to mean. In this particular case, it means the same as forward of your position, i.e., toward the bow of the ship. There is a whole nomenclature for moving around aboard ships: fore, aft, etc. Miles is undoubtedly familiar with it. Amy, Lisa and Taylor, not so much, though they probably know the words. They will probably start using the more common terms if they end up doing a lot of shipboard maneuvering.

Actually, stasis is described as a feature of the one-shots they make available as well:

"And if the patient does not have the required resources?" Doctor Dias, the Endocrinology head, asked with a fascinated look on his face.

"It puts them into a deep state of hibernation, effectively biological stasis, until the resources are available," she replied, looking at him. "Ianthe thinks, and I agree based on some tests, that it could probably keep someone alive for several years at least like that, if necessary cannibalizing non-essential systems to preserve the essential ones. Maintaining viable life is the primary consideration. It would, in theory, even allow someone to recover from being drowned for weeks, if they had one active just after they went into the water."

I personally don't care about which way you go with that though, there will be difference when there are different authors involved, and this is an omake, not actual canon.

Edit: Though Taylor not knowing every single detail about ships? Considering her father working for the DWU and mother being an English Teacher? Sense of disbelief totally broken for me! ;)

I agree Taylor should know the proper terms, but not necessarily how to use them; Danny's a dockworker, not a sailor after all. Plus, she didn't even remember the proper terms for the bow and stern when investigating the tanker.

Not that this matters here; it's Metis, piloted by Lisa, that's using north as a direction in space, and she grew up inland; I'd be surprised if she knows a bilge and a keel are parts of a boat, much less point them out, much less terms like fore and aft...

Except she works as Danny's secretary as Lisa, so I cant really see her missing things like that, especially given her power being far more user friendly now.

Might be worth remembering gravity is artificial on a spaceship... Might not even point in the same direction in all places on the ship... 'Up' might be to the front of the ship, or the top, or... Having a defined 'North' etc. might be very useful...

From what I can tell a one-shot would even save someone who's decapitated, by slapping it on the head within at most a few minutes. At which point they're put into stasis. Amy, sorry, 'Ianthe', does good work...

Possibly if you slapped a one-shot on both the separated head and the body, they'd both be 'saved', then maybe you'd need someone who can rejoin spines to fix things, later... Or can argue precedence between the one-shots...

Maybe it'd be fun having Peter talk to Logan about how he might have competition for surviving ridiculous injuries. :)

(BTW, evidence suggests Logan's 'healing factor' (ha!) is not purely biological, more, maybe, 'informational'. Interesting questions where the biomass and energy come from, and the heat from the repair gets dumped too...)

And how much shipping (and time on a ship) does the DWU handle currently? Not bloody much, if any at all. This will pick up in the future, but the DWU doesn't get to do much unloading of ships. Even when they do, they wont be traversing the innards of the ships much.

OK, that's canon...but I'm not entirely sure HOW that would work for a one-shot. Does the one-shot persist for as long as the person is injured? Like, if you applied a one-shot to somebody who was on fire, would they continue to heal and burn in an endless loop until you were forced into hibernation?

Also, brain damage is a thing. While a symbiote likely could repair structural damage to the brain, if damage prior to application caused memory loss, I don't see how that could be fixed.

If mp3.1415player wants to chime in on his intent behind how they actually would operate under different scenarios, then I'm happy to make a minor edit to the story. Healing the host isn't exactly key to the overall plot, so it is fairly easy to change.

Fair point, if the temple was still there. Now it's covering a significant portion of the planet as rubble. Yautja do not fuck around.

After that big ass queen managed to get aboard that shuttle in the space of the minute and a half it took Ripley and Newt to get aboard and close the door and buckle up, I would not put anything past them. Including a facehugger egg in a empty corner buried somewhere.:o:o:o:o:lol:rofl:

My suggestion, if in a continuous hazardoes environment, form a spore like life capsule where the persons brain/memory is preserved. This is inspired by what happens in nature where microorganisms can form spores to survive adverse environment. You have the brain which is a high energy organ and the seat of the personality, if the symbiote can turn it off, kind of compress it like a zip file, and encase that into a specially hard spore like form sacrificing the rest of the body as materials and energy for the process, then when panacea get the spore, she can add biomass and decompress the spore into a normal brain, around which she can built a new body, then turn the brain on. The person will only remeber going unconscious.

The most common usage of it that I have encountered means there are a number of types of 'North'. Planetary North is obvious, as it depends on a planet's own orientation. System North is usually perpendicular to the orbital plane of that system, in conjunction with the planets themselves. And Galactic North-South is perpendicular to the orbital plane of the galaxy. In space, there is no East or West, you have spinward, driftward, coreward and rimward.
Bear in mind of course that I could be wrong, this is just what I've encountered in a number of sci-fi novels and RPGs.
