Second, Hisana is effectively the heiress of a major clan, the fact that she has the money/connections to hire a seal master should come as a shock to no one.

Third, is Tsunade renowned for her seal work canonically? How about Sakura? There's as much proof of her being a budding medic-nin as her being a seal master based on the FHS.

Fourth, would they actually be able to see the seal work on her sword, or would they only be able to see the effects? Could those effects only be produced by seals, or could she have used stolen jutsu to create them? These are actual questions, I can't think of many non-Konoha ninja with sensory abilities that run in that direction. Its not as though they could ask to examine her personal weapons. That would be liable to get them shanked even if the ninja they were asking was from their own village.

Fifth, we see Tenten use a storage scroll canonically, is she a seal master? Again, actually asking. I don't remember anything to hint at it, and I don't entirely trust wikis.

Sixth, the Snow-nin made extensive use of chakra armor, seal work can't be as personalized and finicky as you're saying or at least half of their number would need to be experts in order to build and maintain all of their gear.

I don't think enemy shinobi would have anything aside from the FHS (which I admit I had forgotten to consider initially) to indicate aptitude for seal work, and one data point does not a pattern make.
She could have hired some, yes, but waving away that she has several other seals (some obvious like the big fucking scroll, some not like the ones on her hand or other scrolls she probably keeps in pouches, some obvious in effect but not in their nature as seals like her reactive chakra armor) to say she probably just commissioned them like she would a sword - when it's a legitimately threatening specialization for a combat ninja, and Konoha has a history of producing heavy combat seal users - seems... I dunno, like you're overcompensating for our awareness as players and as a result making other characters seem less intelligent as a result.

Tsunade is known for being a medic, not a seal master, but she is credited with creating her own seal - which is the actually relevant consideration here. People aren't looking at Tsunade and saying "oh, she's Hashirama Senju's granddaughter, she just paid someone to develop the Strength of One Hundred Seal".

Presumably there have been times where Hisana has had her sword drawn but wasn't actively using it so didn't maintain chakra flow. The information might not be super wide-spread, but I don't doubt some people have seen it. It's also possible the shards of her broken swords were recovered and examined.

Tenten does, in fact, produce her own seals. She also - after the Fourth War - started a store selling "ninja tools" to enable her collecting hobby.

They probably do have a huge logistical requirement, yeah. The logistics of running a military that focuses on well-equipped, heavy-hitting combatants involves several support personnel for each combatant.

Hisana hasn't been in combat (with non-Konoha survivors) enough for any solid information about her less-than-obvious techniques and skills to have spread by observation, but "she has a seal on her forehead that provides a combat boost, so she might have other seals (especially if she developed it herself)" seems like extremely reasonable editorializing of the information we can reasonably expect to have spread (i.e. the FHS is a thing and it gives her a combat boost).

If there was an inversely proportional relationship between the lethality rate and the strength, growth potential or uniqueness of certain genes I would agree, but since it doesn't seem to work that way, it is a terrible bug...
As it is explained in the Manga, you could apply an extremely powerful dude that would die if he loses a metaphoric toss in a d10...
Do remember that everyone who bears a curse seal apparently carries an Orochimaru phylactery.
The lethality as filter for suitability might be deliberate.

As we do see in the manga when Sasuke goes around assembling Team Taka, Orochimaru has a literal base full of Level 2 Curse Seal users.
He doesnt seem to be short of people who survive its application.
Only potentially correct in the most superficial sense. The four things the Hyuuga seal does are 1) cause pain, 2) prevent its own removal, 3) destroy the eyes, and 4) kill the sealed person.

It's also really weird you're still arguing about this while admitting the group that could reasonably expected to develop something like this and apply it to someone else is largely populated by the Sannin.

At this point, you might as well start arguing the conclusion foreign intelligence is coming to is she's a surviving product of Orochimaru, because that might actually make sense for why she has personal seal enhancements someone else applied to her but her teammates don't.
1) The Hyuuga Caged Bird Seal seals the secrets of the Byakugan into their corpse(translation from the first guide book).
That necessarily includes the chakra networks that feed the eye. We know that people's chakra networks normally survive their deaths in part because we see Kakuzu getting an autopsy from Tsunade where she was able to enumerate the effects of Rasenshuriken on his chakra network.

2) Literally all five Great Villages and a few smaller villages operate jinchuuriki.

JInchuuriki all have installed chakra seals that contain and channel tailed beast energies into the bodies and chakra networks of their bearers for combat boosts. None of them applied the seals themselves, and we know it does not require an S-class ninja to seal a tailed beast, as evidenced by what happened to Nohara Rin, and the fact that Waterfall had a jinchuuriki .

This is not conceptually new stuff to the Elemental Countries.
Furthermore, Konoha under Hashirama was the source of most of that knowledge in the first place. They arent going to assume that the new genin with body seals applied them herself, they're going to think that she came out of a supersoldier program where older sealmasters applied it to her.

3)Jiraiya is still alive and doesnt actually take missions, and goes unobserved for long periods of time.
Danzo is still alive and doesnt take missions either, and has an international reputation for being a Hard Man Doing Hard Things While Hard.
Sarutobi was in the village and could be consulted until his recent death.

Foreign intelligence is not short of potential suspects to be running/supervising a fuinjutsu supersoldier program in Konoha, and Orochimaru's previous shenanigans demonstrates that Konoha has a record for research programs like that.

15xp for a well done omake! Some interestingly wrong guesses.
Thank you!
I'd like to hang on to it for now.

I think this is all a bit academic, at this point?

'Crimson Sealmistress' won the vote, so clearly they are aware that Hisana is good at seals.

I will note that whilst all the villages that have Jinchuuriki can obviously apply those seals, the calibre of those seals varies wildly. (Rin's seal was meant to fail)

Sand's jinchuuriki seal is notably absolute garbage, which is a big component of why Gaara is bugfuck nuts (along with abuse from his garbage father and paranoid village council)

So Sand, whilst it has access to sealing, doesn't have anyone who's actually remotely competent at it. I'd assume the major villages and most minor villages have access to production of stuff like explosive seals and storage seals, anything beyond that is unreliable as sealmasters are genuinely rare.

It's probably relevant that Sand is the only one that didn't get their Biju from Leaf.

They'd already caught theirs beforehand, which is probably why Gaara's seal is so... Different.

It seems likely that even the most basic Jinchuuriki seal very much isn't entry-tier sealing work. It also seems possible that for example Sand's various puppets involve some sealwork in their various mechanisms, and that other villages have similar disciplines that use sealing as supplement.
Just because true sealmasters, that have genuine understanding of seals and can develop-from-scratch and use complex ones, are genuinely rare, doesn't mean that less-skilled seal-workers, using mostly tried-and-tested existing seals and sometimes capable of independently developing some very limited new seals and refinements to existing ones, don't exist.

:V

One faction at least knows that Hisana is good at seals.
There are four other Great Villages and a scattering of smaller ones who have yet to update their bingo books/will do so.
So for the meantime there's a *small, infinitesimal* reason to continue the argument.

.... It occurs to me that we really should remember to keep a close eye on Sasuke for a while now. He may be in a vastly superior headspace than canon, but he still just took a Tsukiyomi right to the sanity. Especially with the Trenchcoats probably being up to something in their doomed quest to keep canon on the rails, he will do something stupid if pressed.

I am very not worried about him doing something of his own free will. Even with the Tsukuyomi and the curse seal his defection was still a very near thing in canon.

That said, it'd be good to spend some time with him- just less as a 'to keep him from doing a stupid' kind of thing, and more of a 'our adoptive brother just got traumatized (again) by his older brother (again) and could probably do with some non-traumatic sibling time'.

That sounds like a fun omake, actually, think I might go for that.

(Though if anyone else wants to, go for it.)

The best way to do that is by making sure that Hisana and Naruto remain alive and well...

The main reason why Sasuke has not fallen to the deep end is because, unlike canon, he has not been alone after the Massacre, Hisana and Naruto have been there for him basically from the start.

But remove that support network and he could fall so hard that he may become Obito 2.0.

Was he actually hit with Tsukuyomi here? The text of 7.1 was a bit vague about this. If he was, Hisana seems to be bizarrely underreacting to it.

Nice chapter, one where Hisana is recognised for her achievements in an official capacity was sorely needed, and it didn't disappoint. The detail about Hisana caring about cooking was also nice; I share her appreciation for the art, and it was some cool character development to see her enjoy the plating of the dishes lol.

I... am a bit confused by that myself, Sasuke doesn't seem to be reacting as badly as you'd think either.

Yeah, you're right. Sasuke probably won't willingly do something stupid. I'm more worried about him because of the Trenchcoats, and the Cloaks we saw once before - they've got to be up to something. But yeah, either way, spending time with our brothers is a good idea.

Don't forget about THE FUCKING DANZO...

Seeing his tendency of screwing EVERYTHING and consistently making things worse for both Konoha and the Ninja World I will guess that he either has plans to kill Sasuke and Hisana to tie loose ends, or he is already working with the Trenchcoats/Cloaks brigade, or both...

Plot twist: TTL Danzo got replaced by a SI and is a perfectly pleasant and sane person. :V
Imagine the SI reaction once he looked into a mirror for the first time...

But I disagree, if the SI knew anything about Naruto at all, then he knows that by the time of the merging Danzo has already screwed up big time and that there is basically nothing that he can do to make things better.

No matter what the SI does his previous self has already killed the loved ones of loads of overpowered S-Class Ninjas that far outclass Danzo in terms, of intelligence, resources, and power and is rightfully hated by basically everyone... So the only way of surviving is to double, triple, and quadruple down in the Original Danzo's strategy of remaining alive by surrounding himself with loads of powerful shinobis to serve as his personal meatshield...

Danzo has to be the easiest character to SI into: just by peacefully retiring, you've already solved half the problems in Naruto!

Maybe, but they'd still be able to choose tactics that aren't massively self defeating.
True, but even then the poor SI would find himself on really shitty sitiation by having a massive target on his back for things that he was personally not responsible of doing, and knowing that he can't really do anything to make things right.

I mean, the poor bastard is going to live a life that will be full of stress, fear, and paranoia... So I doubt that he will become a pleasant and sane person.

I don't think it will work that way, even if he retires most of the main antagonist from shippuden have a colossal hate-boner for very rightful reasons, and when the past comes knocking to your Door, I doubt that it can be solved by saying "Sorry, I'm retired"

Depending on when you are SI into Danzo, if it's before Danzo fucked over Nagato, Karin & Yahiko just not helping that go to shit nicely kneecaps Madara & Obito's plan I feel since Nagato has no reason to join forces with Obito/"Madara".

It at least can't make things worse than they otherwise would be.

Chunin Duties 7.3
Chunin Duties 7.3

"Covert supersoldier program? Age ten to seventeen!? Who writes this crap?" Hisana said, shaking her head. Naruto laughed, reading over her shoulder. Sasuke, of course, was simply reading the disguised bingo book via a nearby mirror.

"You know, it makes sense from what they've seen and heard," Kakashi said, hiding his shit-eating grin behind his mask.

"Don't you start, sensei," Hisana retorted. Naruto and Sasuke started to snigger, trying and failing to hide their laughter.

"Hmmph. Say, you two, shouldn't you be paying the special jounin over there some more respect?" Kakashi said.

"Naruto calls the Hokage Granny. I think Hisana's lucky to get 'sis'," Sasuke said. Team Seven continued to walk through the streets of Konoha, though one by one they began to peel off. Naruto had to go meet Jiraiya, Kakashi was teaching Sasuke something before he left on a mission, and Hisana had an appointment to keep.

Gai and Lee were busy trying to best the other at vertical one finger push-ups when Hisana arrived at the training ground. Gai flipped onto his feet, grinning as he saw her approach.

"Ah, student of my eternal rival! I was most pleased to hear of your promotion!" He said, grinning.

"Thank you, Gai-sensei. What are we working on today?" Hisana asked.

"We will be working on your taijutsu today... and after a recent experience, I believe it will be beneficial for all of us to learn blind-fighting!" Gai said, removing three blindfolds from a pouch. Hisana almost protested, then she remembered that Gai had fought Itachi in the manga - he must have done that there as well.

Sighing, Hisana accepted the blindfold.

+++++

A somewhat sore Hisana arrived in fresh mission clothes, and her new chunin vest, to the mission assignment desk a few hours later. Sasuke and Naruto were already there, chatting to each other.

"You were almost late!" Naruto shouted.

"Eh, an old lady needed help with her gro-" Hisana began only for Naruto to interrupt her.

"It's contagious!" he shouted, as Sasuke chuckled.

"Not another one..." muttered one of the chunin, whilst another waved Team Seven up towards the Hokage's office. They walked up the stairs, and Hisana felt a little uncomfortable in her new vest. It seemed bizarre that she outranked the mission desk staff now - that she outranked Iruka-sensei!

"Right, you lot. Normally I wouldn't bother assigning missions to such junior ninja as yourselves, but it appears that there are certain parties interested in you that make sending you out of the village, and especially out of the country, risky. So you take your missions from me, Shikaku Nara, or Kakashi. Anyone else tries to send you on one, tell them to fuck off. Got that, brats?" Tsunade said.

"Gotcha, granny!" Naruto said, cheerfully. Sasuke stiffened a little but nodded.

"Understood, Lady Hokage," Hisana said.

"I'm glad that's understood. Now, as to your mission - every four years, two great merchant clans in the Land of Tea have a foot race for control over, ah,-" Tsunade said, pausing for a moment to retrieve a particular piece of paper from beneath the massive mound on her desk. "- that's it, Degarashi Port. We send a team of ninja to support the Wasabi family in every race. Usually a jounin and some experienced chunin - but because I came home to find my esteemed teammates had wrecked the place, we're sending you three. Hopefully, they'll be too busy being impressed by your family name to care that you're just two genin and a special jounin," Tsunade finished.

"We'll do our best to impress," Hisana said, thinking back to her memories. Wasn't there something about the Land of Tea and a race in the anime, she wondered.

"And pick me up some Degarashi wine while you're at it. Not the cheap Wagarashi stuff either, mind you," Tsunade said, as she threw the mission scroll at Hisana.

"Of course, Lady Hokage," Hisana said, grinning. Naruto giggled, and the three of them made their way towards the Uchiha compound to get ready.

As Naruto rushed off to gather up some of the instant-ramen scrolls Hisana had amde him, she pulled Sasuke aside.

"Is everything okay?" she asked. He seemed fine - happy, almost. Hisana still felt a nagging worry, though. How could he be fine after meeting Itachi again?

"It's fine!" Sasuke snapped, and Hisana merely raised an eyebrow. "I am - I'm fine. He didn't get me the way he got sensei. Naruto did something to call Jiraiya, and he ran away rather than fight him,"

"But you still couldn't beat him?" Hisana said, quietly.

"It - it was like I was a little kid again. He just... just brushed me off. And - and he was more interested in Naruto than me,"

"If he's after Naruto... that's just extra incentive to get strong enough. But you're not doing this alone," Hisana said, and put a hand on his shoulder. Sasuke breathed in and nodded. He wasn't okay, Hisana thought, but he was doing as good as he could be.

+++++

Hisana looked different as she walked out of the main gates, her team behind her. She wore a chunin vest over her usual mission dress and shorts and had the Sword of Spring on her hip. Part of its regenerative properties allowed it to change its size to suit the wielder - but more impressively, Hisana had been able to 'etch' the seals she needed right into the metal.

The two chunin on gate duty gave her a little bow as she walked past, and it was all Hisana could do not to blush. They were fully grown men - mid-twenties at least - and she outranked them! It was madness. She tried to imagine someone her age being granted a similar position in Mary's world and laughed. Still, that was the way it was here. Kakashi had been a full jounin at her age, though at least they hadn't given him a genin team.

Team Seven blurred between trees as Hisana pondered how she'd make her entrance to the port town...

[x] Flashy - arrive on a summoned raven. Hisana needs to keep up the prestige of Konoha, and this will do that. It will also attract attention.

[x] Subtly - arrive without being noticed by anyone. This has its own prestige - an aura of mystery and danger. Might be hard to pull off with your team, though.

[x] Confidently - arrive by walking right down the main street, without a care in the world. This is might lead to drawing out enemy ninja. There's no guarantee of who those ninja are, though.

So, looks like no Tsukuyomi for Sasuke, but there's definitely that lingering undercurrent of frustration that he's the one lagging behind.
