On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

[X] Claim the Title of Heir: [Cost: ???] Gain title: Heir of Thungni, ??? You claim a position that has remained in doubt since Durin died. By Thungni's word, the hammer you would now wield confirms that you are His Heir. Elevating your authority to that of the Ancestor's eldest children, living or dead. You would not, could not be a tyrant of course, but still.

The issue I see is if we take on the title, we presumably aren't planning to pull back on our plans and become more moderate. When we were 'merely' a Runelord of great renown, the other Runelords could bluster and argue and even try and curtail our actions, and feel like they had a say in things. Sitting our ass on Durin's seat and trying to make radical changes? That is exactly the kind of thing that pushes a group as independent and free-willed as the Runesmiths into far more extreme resistance, even open rebellion, because from their perspective that's their only choice of recourse. Brighter lights cast deeper shadows and all that
Not quite.

Currently our sample size is consistent in that the primary driver of resistance to us is that it's inappropriate relative to Thungni's generally non-existant Commandments. Their opposition is framed consistently that it deviates from Thungni's commandments.

Taking the title gives our words significantly more weight since it implies some level of Thungni approval/position in the many many areas Thungni didn't make any positions known.

Oh sure, and I totally think that our (now unfortunately inevitable barring a miracle) claiming if the title will silence a lot of opposition. The problem is that it definitely won't silence all opposition, and what opposition we do have will find itself with less avenues of combatting our decisions. I worry that in that scenario, some or even a far number of people will choose to escalate rather than sit down and shut up, causing the exact kind of schism we are trying to avoid.

[X] Refuse the Title of Heir: [Cost: Nothing] Gain ???. You will take up this hammer, you will use it, but you are your own Dwarf with your own goals. The burden of carrying Thungni's Will, of being His Heir, is one you choose not to carry. Someone or no one can claim it for all you care, but it will not be you.

Oh boy, I'm pretty sure most of the people voting for heir aren't voting for what they think they're voting for.

People seem to think it's a title and people listening to you, not Snorri changes everything he does to become more like Thungi.

Sucks to lose a vote to a misapprehension.
Most people are voting because if you were gonna take and use the Hammer that is meant for the Heir, you better pony up and actually take on the responsibilities.

I don't know how exactly you're expecting them to escalate considering most of the usual ways would have them shaving their hair and taking on a Slayer's oath, so...*shrugs*

Declare that we are a liar and formally call a grudge on Snori would be one way. Try to force the House of Runesmiths on a vote on the matter of Snori being a liar and a usurper of Thungi's legacy. If one were actively trying to case a schism to 'preserve the Thungi's intent' that is how it would be done. Drag the local kings into it for good measure.

Big problem. Toy can't truly fake Thungi's hammer...which has 7 RUNES. Even if they created replicas, it came nothing close to Thungi's hammer. And I see Arik himself saying "Yep, that is Thungi's hammer" and those who will deny that, are fools and they will shame themselves!

Could make something with the eventual memory share rune.

Would be a nice way to disrupt another Conclave.

its a simple effect, so while we may not know of one, it'd be pretty trivial for a runelord (any runelord) to make something that can discern truth from lies.
If there's not a Runelord who's figured out some way of sharing memories or detecting truth vs lies I'd be very surprised, yeah. We know stuff that seems like it'd work as a starting point for those effects, at least
