On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Cool. That means we just need a rune to act as the homing system and a piercing rune to give it bonus damage. Seems pretty easy to make actually.

A one shot weapon but basically infinite ammo since the projectile returns to you.
There's some pretty solid runes for that. Master Rune of Flight, Rune of Accuracy (homing), Rune of Penetration (What it says on the tin).

Probably easier to finagle with a Axe than an arrow or dart, just due to it being easier to catch and Dwarfs liking axes a lot.

Doh. Thank you.

But point stands, I figure its best to focus on trickle research and defenses right now. Just for getting our army sorted out in however long we have left.
Trickle researches on what? In terms of extra actions-
productivity like no other is an extra .5 actions per action, rune metal is .666 (2/3), other research that procs student of the odd is .333 (1/3). Trickle research on rune metal is spending 10 actions as opposed to 6 so that puts us behind on clearing other actions out.

In the privacy of his personal workshop, Snorri Gift-Giver stares at a tool covered wall, fingers combing through the long length of his white beard.

"What the fuck is my luck."
~
Seriously, three apprentices way above average, two of them super prodigies, a gromril mine, and now an entire forest of wuthroth plus? What's next, tripping over some Star Dragon eggs?
Getting access to Dragonfire can make even more advanced forging and rune techniques.

But what other good resources is there next to get? A valley of goats? Hidden lake with edible plants?

I am looking forward to the demon invasion at this point. A few decades of siege should allow us to catch up on our research backlog.

More like,
"Runelord, a Greater Daemon is turning our weapons to molten metal, we need better ones."
"Runelord, the Throng needs you to protect them against Witchcraft."
"Runelord, the defenses of our outer gates have fallen, we need you to reinforce them."
"Runelord, the Nurgilites have fouled our supplies. We need you to work with the priestesses to ensure we still have reserves remaining."
"Runelord." "Runelord." "Runelord."

Good thing Snorri has that productivity trait, so he's used to workloads like what's coming up.

Shard Dragon

A Shard Dragon is an enormous, serpentine beast which prowls the black depths of the mortal world, stalking its prey in the abject darkness, pulling themselves silently over rock and shale on disturbingly prehensile, sickle-clawed arms. Their pale flesh is covered by long jagged scales, each...

This is an interesting one. Dwarves slapping rune collars to control this dragon.

In the long run it saves us actions, though how useful those saved action are depends entirely on what they're used for. In the now and short run though they actively lower the level our defenses could be at when the daemonic horde arrives by taking time away from them. Trickle research still lets us get some of it done without taking up three quarters of our action count and thus meaning we often only complete one defense request per turn. If that, since many can be multiple actions.

E: Basically your efficiency math is not helpful when we are on a deadline.

I've always been a bit iffy on the utility of runed throwing weapons, because it seems like they cost a lot more than, say, crossbows, and because I'm not really sure how much better 10 hammer-boomerangers would do compared to 10 quarrelers (even assuming the quarrelers are using plain, un-runed crossbows).

If I understand the rune correctly, the best way for us specifically to use it would be to put it on secondary ranged weapons to give to special characters that could use a ranged option (although it'd mostly be a "use once before melee, then forget all about until either the opponent is running, or there's a disruption in the fight" thing).

Hmm, could we make (Master rune of Flight + Rune of killy X + Rune of killy Y) items in the shape of innocuous belt items, (like a little prospecting pick for us, just something that wouldn't be immediately suspect), and then when a fight breaks out, you can grab it out of your belt and throw it as a ranged option?

Edit: What I'm torturously trying to get across is that I'm not sure runing 20 hammers to be flying would have equal benefit to runing say, 15 hammers to just be better melee weapons, and 5 grudge throwers to be better ranged weapons. (which, IIRC would be easier and take less time because you wouldn't need to do 20 master runes, you could just use normal runes.)

Don't see why not.

One funny set is Master Rune of Flight, Rune of Might, Rune of Fire. Oh hey its a meteor again :V

Or this one; Master Rune of Flight, Rune of Might, Rune of Speed. Dwarf Railgun ho! :V

E: But your point isn't far off. Specialization is somewhat encouraged when it comes to runeing weapons or ranged warmachines.

We can try to make Leviathan.

We can try to make Leviathan.

*rubs chin*

Master Rune of Flight, Rune of Cleaving or Rune of Might, and Rune of Frost. Or just double up on Rune of Frost if we want.

E: And honestly, Leviathan is probably a good example of what the Master Rune of Flight can achieve with a properly runed weapon.

If we are willing to live without the auto-return feature we could go full railgun with Master Rune of Currents.

Master Rune of Currents + Rune of Accuracy + Rune of Animation = the arrow has already hit the target

Really, Master Rune of Currents is theoretically, cost aside, incredibly good and thematic for a ranged, sharp projectile.

Master Rune of Currents: The weapon cuts like the biting winds at the mountain's peak, faster, sharper and unblockable. Necessary Ingredients: [T2]Griffon's Brain

Except that trickle research means you are spending more actions overall to get the same amount of stuff done so you are making less progress overall. If the deadline includes finishing research than you are best off finishing it in one go if rune metal, if other stuff like troll heart than that is more efficient to trickle research instead of trickle request.

Or we could set it up as a pair, maybe? a Glove or Ring that calls to that specific axe and the axe you throw, with as much cool shit that you can throw onto it.

The deadline does not include research. I don't care about making less progress overall on research.

E: I'm still doing trickle research because people want to do it, and having some progress knocked off when it becomes one of the few options available to us is sensible.

Arent you all over thinking the ammo stuff?

We can just inscribe the relevant runes on the launching device. Current, fortitude, strength. Current to guide the strikes (ammunition). Strength to propel the blow (launching mechanism). Fortitude to improve its toughness (against recoil). Even opens up potential for a narrative angle to justify a combo.

Make some larger bolts with minor rune combos to play off that kind of bolt thrower, and that is where you can start getting fancy with more exotic projectiles.
