[x] "Indeed it is, Tomoe-san, and we'll need to work together if we want to have a chance of defeating it."
[x] "But let's have dinner first. You look like you need some time to collect yourself before we can begin our discussion in earnest."
[x] "Also, while you clearly know of me, allow me to introduce Sayaka. She's a good friend of mine."
[x] "Kyouko, were you able to get ahold of Nanoha?"
[x] Help with small talk as much as you can, to avoid serious topics until at least after dinner.

You decide to attack this tangentially, and hopefully keep Mami off balance...and hopefully not ruin the meal, either. Thus, you nod grimly, "Indeed it is, Tomoe-san, and we'll need to work together if we want to have a chance of defeating it."

She doesn't respond, but you keep going, "But let's have dinner first. You look like you need some time to collect yourself before we begin our discussion in earnest."

She nods shakily, and Kyouko quirks and eyebrow, "...uh, Mami? Snap out of it. It's just a big Witch...we'll eat the bitch for breakfast!"

Mami slowly exhales, shaking her head, but doesn't argue...yet. You move on for them moment, gesturing towards your blue-haired companion, "Also, while you clearly know of me, allow me to introduce Sayaka. She's a good friend of mine."

Kyouko muffles a cough that sounds improbably like "sidekick." You ignore her commentary in favor of locking your eyes on her, "Kyouko, were you able to find Nanoha?"

Mami blinks in surprise, elegantly conveying through her gaze what amounts to, '...huh? What the hell are you talking about?'

You nod, "...no, I'm not kidding. It's possible she's just a deluded Puella Magi, but her abilities indicate otherwise. No, I have no clue how she could exist, much less be here of all places, but Kyouko was supposed to invite her."

Kyouko finishes stuffing the last biscuit down her gullet, to your consternation, before explaining, "...I kinda gave her the wrong time. Figured you'd want to talk things over with Mami before the White Devil shows up. Maybe present a united front or something...eh, forget it. She's here...early, I think. Great."

Kyouko gives a wave, and Nanoha approaches slowly, a resolute expression on her face, "...alright, I'm here. Please explain everything. Now."

You feel a headache coming on as you try to figure out how to approach this and what to tell her...especially with Mami around to hear things she shouldn't.

I've got to head off to work in a few minutes, but for now ...
* No Akemi Madness; we're in public, it probably won't go down well.
* Apologize for last night, explain that it's an occupational hazard of running too close to the Out of Magic zone.
* Introduce Nanoha and Mami, making very sure to explain that this is Mami's territory.
* Maybe have Kyouko keep Mami filled in telepathically?
* Food.
* Wait to discuss Walpurgisnacht until later.

Also:
Kyouko finishes stuffing the last biscuit down her gullet, to your consternation
KYOUKO!!! :rage: *Shakefist*

Go with polite, Entropy Judge´s suggestions are good we should explain about the magic thing to make her understand.

.....not completely though since Mumi is there and she wants to play tetris.

Uhmmm say the thing about contract and power and wish and explain about witches and that mostly Megucas go solo and are more...confrontational.

Something like this?

I forget, can we lichbomb Mami safely? I know we can't witchbomb her without her turning murderhobo on us, but she already knows about lichdom, right?

Since it appears taht we forgot~
(I actually like doing this way too much)

@Higure What does the scouter I mean HomuMind tell us?!
Mami does not know the Lichbomb, and takes it fairly well. It can create conflict between her and Kyubey, but the little beast can mostly get itself off the hook if you don't interfere...which is good for Mami's sanity, if slightly annoying.

Well yeah, I get the feeling most people just see Kyuubey as an adorable magical cat. You don't hold a grudge against a cat for not understanding human ideals.

Unless you're crazy.

Tell that to all the haters~

But QB can talk(telepathically) and "reason" So its in a different level than a cat you know?

I mean if I had a cat that I could debate philosophy with I wouldny exactly treat him like a mere cat ya know?

I forget, can we lichbomb Mami safely? I know we can't witchbomb her without her turning murderhobo on us, but she already knows about lichdom, right?
I have no idea how much she may know. I would suspect that it would be a dangerous topic, though.

OK, first, we need to defuse Nanoha. She's back into uptight mode. Probably not helped by Kyouko being the one to invite her. I wonder if we can give Kyouko a crash course in politeness by forcing her to spend a day with MikiMom? (have to get MikiMom off SAO for a day, though...)

Anyway.... "Normal" Homura would not be able to handle this. Honestly, it's amazing Homura has been doing as well as she has, lately. This makes me concerned about how I write this, because it would be very easy to get into OOC territory.

Still, given her family background, Homura can still manage manners. And we can play a similar disorientation as with Mami, to get things to calm down. Helps keep things in sync with dealing with Mami, as well.

[] Stand up and pull a chair out for Nanoha, inviting her to sit.
[] "The first thing you have to understand is that stress is dangerous for a Puella Magi. So, order a dinner — anything you want; I'm paying — and let's have a nice meal together before we worry about the... more complicated things we need to discuss."
[] "The second thing you have to understand is that if you don't get your own basket of biscuits, Kyouko will probably eat them before you get any." Glare at Kyouko.
[] "Anyway, you already know Kyouko and Sayaka. This is Tomoe Mami, the magus who in charge of the local area. Tomoe-san, this is Takamachi Nanoha; she assisted us in dealing with the witch that manifested in the theater last night."
[] If Mami asks about the 'stress' comment, telepathy back: "Energy blasts tend to be hazardous to your health." A sufficient non-answer.

Unfortunately, that's only the non sequitur stage; we still need a properly calming stage. Gaming talks won't really work this time; it's fine for Sayaka and Kyouko, but leaves out Mami and Nanoha, and those two are the ones we need to drag in.

Hmm. Nanoha's parents are cafe proprietors, and Mami is of course known for tea and cake. We might be able to drive a food-based conversation. Can nag Kyouko about her poor taste in junk food, and it's easy enough for Sayaka to be involved, as well.

[] Drive the conversation with talks about choices for dinner, drinks (do they have any good tea?), whether or not you'll be able to manage desert, nagging Kyouko to get something decent to eat (an entire cheesecake is not a meal), etc. Subtly try to get Sayaka to help you out (her own personality and MikiMom training should put her in a better position to handle this sort of thing than Homura). Try to drain as much of the tension out of the group as possible over the course of dinner.

Thoughts on this? Improvements? Too OOC?

mmm... I'm not sure we should try to delay Nanoha more. We already set up this dinner as a delaying action, I don't think she'll be happy if we don't give her any answers before delaying yet again.

We're going to have to give her something to think about at least before delaying again. Personally, I think we should get the basics of 'what are meguca', 'what are witches' and 'what are grif sed' out of the way now. I think we are going to have to talk about the lichbomb at least if we want to get across how seriously we need grief seeds to cleanse our souls.

Hm. Actually, there's more. Why is Nanoha so stressed right now? It could be because of Kyouko's handling of the invitation, but... it could also be that the day has not been going well for her, and Nanoha is reaching a breaking point. She's stressed because this is not her universe, and things are not working the way she thinks they should.

That will make the calming half of things more difficult. If she's just upset at Kyouko, general chatter should help defuse it. If her world is starting to crumble around her, she'll have a very hard time relaxing. Similar issue to Mami, really.

Perhaps focus on the food conversation up until we get dinner and start eating, and then start working on small questions while the actual dinner is in progress. The stress will prevent casual conversation from lasting throughout the entire dinner, but it should be good for the first ~20 minutes while we order and get appetizers, then dinner. Once dinner actually starts, then we can get into things like explaining how Sayaka and Nanoha got involved in the witch fight, what was strange about it, etc, and gradually work through other topics.

BTW, should we cleanse? 673 is not precisely a dangerous level, but 2/3rds grief is not a trivial amount to carry around when trying to be diplomatic.

Actually we could use that as a visual aid, to demonstrate to Nanoha that we're definitely not just weird versions of her kind of mage.

Or she might be suffering from after-effects of the Witch, given that she did try to SLB it, and then things got Worse, and she's probably had to try and deal with everything herself. She's a complete outsider here, and ... well, we kind of haven't been helping, between the near-fight, and how we told her we'd split during the fight with the Witch if we thought it was too dangerous.

More specifics might be good...

Do you mean more things to talk about, or be more specific about the things I'm suggesting? I don't think the latter is necessary, as given the subjects, either a broad answer or a sufficiently safe specific answer can be used by Homura.
Yeah, sufficiently specific answers are good for now.

Specifying that can only help, its just that I think the way you worded it its ....too broad? I know the witch wont fuck us over that much but I like to be safe...

You should probably ditch the line about Mami's level of skill, unless you want people to question how Homura knows this despite having never seen her fight.

Hm, wasn't Mami fairly well-known? It's entirely possible that I'm conflating fanfics/quests with Canon, but I'd thought that Mitakihara was notable for having a large number of Witches - and combining that with "Mami's been at this for a while" and "She's the only Magus in Mitakihara" leads to "most skilled Magus I'm aware of." Or, hell, just word-of-mouth could get her a reputation ....

But if it doesn't have a canon basis, then, yeah, I can take it out.

Actually we could use that as a visual aid, to demonstrate to Nanoha that we're definitely not just weird versions of her kind of mage.
We could do it as a demonstration of how grief seeds work.
A reasonable demonstration, with respect to Nanoha. Though it's going to freak Kyouko out, because she just left us a couple hours ago.

OK, backing off from the full non-sequitur route...

Hmm. Letting the others, who have no reason to expect us to know anything specific about Mami, to have that opinion of her, may cause more confusion. On the other hand, it may not matter much; it helps butter up Mami (who may assume you know her by reputation), Sayaka is aware of.. things... and Kyouko.. well, she's smart enough that she's likely to start fitting pieces together.

[x] Introduce her to Mami, and explain that this — and the theater — are actually in her territory, and that she's the most skilled Magus we're aware of.

I still want to go the food route, at least somewhat, though, to reinforce the "humanness" of this get-together. Get Mami and Nanoha leaning a bit more towards seeing everyone here as actual people, rather than potential enemies.

[x] However, we're here for dinner. I haven't had anything proper to eat since breakfast, and it would be nice to have something to eat while we're talking.
-[x] Order anything you like; I'm paying.
-[x] Kyouko, a cheesecake is not a proper meal.
-[x] Order extra biscuits. Make sure Kyouko can't steal them.

Before we even get to explaining things to Nanoha, though, there's Mami to consider as well. In order for her to understand why Nanoha needs these explanations, we also need to explain how we met and what happened last night. Kyouko may have explained some stuff to her, but a second perspective doesn't hurt. Plus, it helps confirm that we're telling the truth, if what we say matches what Kyouko told her.

[x] Once food is ordered (with a pause when food arrives), and we can start talking...
-[x] First, a few introductions. Tomoe-san, Kyouko and I are Puella Magi — magical girls of a very specific sort.
-[x] Nanoha-san is... Nanoha, as far as I can tell. How she managed to end up in our world, I don't know, but she seems like the real deal.
-[x] And Sayaka is... well, do you want to tell them yourself?

-[x] Give a summary of the events last night to Mami: A conglomerate "witch"; Kyouko destroying the barrier; Nanoha destroying the angel; Sayaka killing the witch.
-[x] And the confrontation over the confusion about the nature of witches and grief seeds and such. Which is what Nanoha here is hoping to learn more about.

Doing the above both to set the context for Nanoha's questions, and to confirm to Mami that Sayaka is not some random normal dropping in on the conversation.

-[x] Provide the "official" version of propaganda for Puella Magi.

This is a hint to Kyouko that we don't want to dive too deeply into the darker secrets, so that she doesn't spill too much to Mami.

-[x] Details the basic consequences of living as a Puella Magi: The duty and need to hunt witches, grief seeds, and similar matters.
-[x] Explain that grief seeds are not Lost Logia. Logia are the artifacts of an ancient civilization. Grief seeds only come into existence with the defeat of a witch; they simply do not exist before the witch is created, nor are they the product of some actual Lost Logia.
-[x] However, even if they were Lost Logia, it's still foolhardy to simply take them without consideration of the consequences of your own actions. Consider a man with a weak heart, who's only able to survive because of a Logia he possessed. Taking it away from him merely means that he's now going to die.
-[x] For Puella Magi, these [grief seed] are what we need to "not die".
--[x] Demonstrate the use of a grief seed on your own soul gem.
--[x] If Kyouko overreacts, direct her (via telepathy) to ask Sayaka about it later, but assure her that it had nothing to do with SAO.

Reinforce how things work, for Nanoha, and get the demo out of the way. Also, head off Kyouko's reaction.

[x] Focus on the meal for a while, to get past the awkwardness of the conversation.
[x] In any case, what's more important right now, for us, is the future. In addition to what I mentioned to Tomoe-san, there are implications of Nanoha herself being here, as well as the angel-witch. In fact, there are a number of things I've come across recently that make me uncomfortable — things that shouldn't be here.
[x] This isn't Nanoha's universe.
-[x] Ah, speaking of which, you are holding up OK, right? You mentioned you hadn't been able to contact your friends.

A thought: Can we maneuver a Mami invite for Nanoha, the way Sayaka invited Homura? Presenting Nanoha as literally alone, and cut off from her friends, may spark some sympathy from Mami, and provide her a potential anchor.

[x] Discuss some of the anomalies that have been encountered, and suspicions that a wish may have changed the past.

All the rumors about time mages are that they're crazy. On the other hand, there's a lack of information beyond that, so it's possible we can claim things solely on people's uncertainty about what a time mage can actually do.

[x] However, even aside from that, there's still the issue of Walpurgisnacht. It's not a witch we can just ignore or dismiss, or even run from. <the last to Nanoha, specifically>
[x] It is possible to defeat it. The trick is figuring out how to do so without losing something you're not willing to sacrifice.
[x] I'm working on figuring out exactly how to go about that.

Go back to the Walpurgisnacht issue to finish up the magic-side conversation.

[x] Try to switch to more light-hearted topics when we can get to dessert. We can always talk about more the next time we get together.

Again try to reinforce the human-ness, while also presenting the idea of getting together again as a normal expectation.

-[] Nanoha-san is... Nanoha, as far as I can tell. Even if she's a fake, she's a good enough fake that she is, for all intents and purposes, real.
-[] Sayaka can also be considered a magical girl, though of yet another type than the rest. I can personally confirm that she is not a Puella Magi.
A couple issues with these two. With Nanoha, even if we suspect she's a fake, saying something along those lines is kind of ... tactless. Directing Mami to the anime/movie, or clarifying our belief via telepathy should be fine, but we should probably avoid loaded terms like 'fake' when Nanoha's around, especially since this is before learning her side of the story. With Sayaka, it's more that I'm not sure how to handle her situation, because we know so very little about what she is and can do. I'd prefer to avoid discussing her at all, if possible - or at least set things up so that she can choose what she wants to reveal.

-[] However, even if they were Lost Logia, it's still foolhardy to simply take them without consideration of the consequences of your own actions. If a man with a weak heart was only able to survive because of a Logia he possessed, would you simply take it from him without making sure he wasn't going to die as soon as you left? You were terribly concerned about the lives of the people the witch threatened; is that concern only given to some people?
I think this is a bit harsh - the sentiment is fine, especially with the demonstration, but the accusations are rather unfair to Nanoha. She does need to learn that this isn't her world, but this comes off as needlessly antagonistic, I think; dropping the last sentence, and rephrasing the 'weak heart' example as a statement instead of a question is less likely to upset her (and less likely to make Homura seem schizophrenic if we ask how she's doing a few minutes later).
